The software fee is tied to the EC2 instance type you choose, so pricing scales with instance size and family. Options span general-purpose (m-series, a1, t4g), compute-optimized (c-series), memory-optimized (r-series, x2gd), storage-optimized (i4g, im4gn, is4gen), HPC (hpc7g), and graphics (g5g) families. What does the hourly software fee actually buy, and what is not included?
The hourly fee covers the AlmaLinux 9.3 hardened, minimal image on the ARM64 instance you select. The image ships in minimal installation with security enabled and root login disabled. The EC2 compute, storage, and network charges are billed separately by AWS and are not part of this software fee.
Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running instance-hours. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are separate AWS infrastructure charges, not the image software fee.
Why does the price differ across instance types like t4g.nano and m7g.metal?
The software fee is set per EC2 instance type. Each type maps to a specific ARM64 size and family, from small shared-CPU sizes up to bare-metal. Larger sizes carry higher hourly rates. You pick the instance type that fits your workload, and that choice sets your rate.
