See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for a preconfigured Windows Server 2022 image hardened to US STIG security standards. Pricing is usage-based, with no upfront commitment. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the instance size and family you choose. Smaller general-purpose instances carry lower hourly rates, while larger compute, memory, storage, GPU, and bare-metal instances carry higher rates. You run the software on top of the matching EC2 instance and are billed only for the hours you use. Select the instance that fits your workload's compute and memory needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually receive for the hourly rate on a given instance type?
You get a preconfigured Windows Server 2022 image with US STIG security profiles already applied. The rate covers this hardened software running on the matching EC2 instance you select. The instance's compute, memory, and storage capacity come from that EC2 type, billed separately by AWS.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters running instance-hours. When an instance is fully stopped, the hourly software charge does not accrue. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the hardened image charge applies only while the instance runs.
Why are there so many instance dimensions, and how do I pick the right one?
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, spanning general-purpose, compute, memory, storage, GPU, and bare-metal families. You pick the instance matching your workload's compute and memory needs. The hardened Windows Server 2022 image is identical across all of them; only the hourly rate and hardware capacity change.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
