The AMI helps reduce manual hardening effort and configuration drift across AWS accounts and environments. Deploy and Operate with Confidence
The image is ready for use when launched. Hardened Images recommends AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) for administrative access whenever possible so SSH does not need to be exposed to the public Internet.
If SSH is required, use the ec2-user account, your selected EC2 key pair, and tightly scoped network access.

Am I charged the hourly software rate when the instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running instance-hours. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Note that AWS may still bill underlying storage for a stopped instance, but that is separate from this listing's software rate.
