You pay by the hour for this ready-to-run Windows Server 2019 Minimal image. Pricing is tied to the EC2 instance type you choose, so cost scales with the compute size you run. The general-purpose families here include burstable t2, t3, and t3a instances for lighter or variable workloads, and steady m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n instances for consistent workloads. Within each family, sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and bare-metal options. You pay only for the hours each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for a given instance type?
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. The instance runs the Windows Server 2019 Minimal image plus the underlying compute. Your instance size determines the hourly rate. You choose the family and size that matches your workload.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or powered off?
Hourly software charges apply only while an instance runs. A stopped instance stops accruing the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS storage for the volume may still incur separate AWS charges. The software meter tracks running hours only.
Can I switch between instance types, and how does that change my cost?
You can stop an instance and relaunch on a different instance type. Your hourly rate then matches the new type's pricing. Burstable t2, t3, and t3a families suit lighter or variable workloads. The m-series families suit steady, consistent workloads. You pay the rate for whichever type runs.
