You pay by the hour for a preconfigured Apache Karaf image running on Amazon Linux 2023. Pricing has one variable: the EC2 instance type you launch. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size and family, from small burstable types like t3.nano up to large compute instances and bare-metal options. Software charges scale with the compute capacity of the instance you choose. Larger instances cost more per hour than smaller ones. There is no upfront commitment or fixed term. You add AWS infrastructure charges separately, and you stop paying when you stop the instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get when I pick one of these hourly instance dimensions?
You get a preconfigured Apache Karaf image on Amazon Linux 2023, launched on the EC2 instance type named in that dimension. Karaf is an OSGi-based application container for running Java applications. The dimension sets the instance family and size, which fixes the CPU and memory you receive.
Am I charged the software fee when the instance is stopped?
Software charges meter running instance-hours. When you stop the instance, hourly software charges stop too. A stopped instance may still incur separate AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are AWS infrastructure charges, not the software license itself.
If I move to a bigger instance type, how does my hourly cost change?
Changing the instance type changes which dimension you are billed under. Larger families and sizes carry a higher per-hour software rate than smaller ones. The switch is not automatic; you launch or resize to the instance type you want, and billing follows the type actually running.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources.
