Providing a holistic approach to student health, safety, and efficiency with Kokomo24/7 and AWS

For students to succeed, they need to feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. Yet many schools still rely on fragmented or outdated processes to support student health and safety. At Ninth Street Elementary, a Title I school in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), those gaps were particularly acute.

Kokomo24/7, an education technology (EdTech) company, provides wrap-around health and safety platforms powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that meet the needs of an individual school or an entire school district.

As the trusted safety technology provider of LAUSD since 2018, Kokomo24/7 recently implemented an all-in-one solution to improve health and safety at Ninth Street Elementary that reduces chronic absenteeism and provides more efficient school services to its community.

Supporting schools with a holistic safety and wellness platform

Located in LA’s Fashion District, Ninth Street Elementary is one of LAUSD’s 523 elementary schools, as well as one of its most underserved. At the school, 98 percent of students come from low-income households, 39 percent are English language learners, and only a small percentage are on track for grade-level proficiency in core subjects like math, English, and science.

Despite these challenges, school leadership is committed to creating a safe, supportive space for every learner. But until recently, staff relied on paper-based systems to manage critical operations like visitor management and tardy tracking, which made it difficult to keep accurate records, act on student behavior trends, or communicate easily with families.

Enter Kokomo24/7, a cloud-native software-as-a-service (SaaS) company and AWS Partner on a mission to create safer schools, workplaces, and communities. Its School Safety Cloud platform offers integrated, configurable tools for visitor management, panic buttons, event management, behavioral threat assessment, and more. Unlike point solutions that solve one problem at a time, School Safety Cloud brings these critical functions into one holistic platform.

Kokomo24/7 has served LAUSD as its safety technology provider since 2018 to modernize safety operations across its campuses. This strong relationship helped Ninth Street work closely with the Kokomo24/7 team to tailor the platform’s capability to support their unique student population.

A flexible approach to visitor management and more

Ninth Street needed a more accessible way to manage visitors, tardiness, and student health. To help, Kokomo24/7 deployed a three-foot-high digital kiosk in days, situated near the school’s entrance to welcome and orient visitors in multiple languages. Now, visitors check in by typing their name or scanning a pre-registration QR code. A visitor badge prints instantly. Staff can easily view current visitors for safety reasons or access past event records for analytics and planning purposes.

“Some community members may face challenges with handwriting or English literacy,” said Nicholas Welch, marketing lead at Kokomo24/7. “But they were able to use their phones or type on the keypad, which was really impactful for the families.” The kiosk is also a point of pride for teachers and administrators, who say it projects a tech-forward image for the school.

Kokomo24/7 provided the school with a more efficient process for tardy management. Staff can now utilize a web or mobile app to log late student arrivals and print tardy slips through a connected Zebra printer. Data is immediately available through a centralized dashboard to improve overall visibility into student attendance and school arrivals. Kokomo24/7 makes it easier for staff to identify and support students at risk of falling behind in school.

Improving attendance through school-based telehealth

To address chronic absenteeism while reducing barriers to healthcare, Ninth Street has access to Kokomo24/7’s Virtual Care Platform. This school-based telehealth service connects students to licensed providers directly from the nurse’s office so they can receive diagnosis or treatment without leaving campus.

This first-in-the-nation model has shown impressive results. In LAUSD schools using the solution, return-to-class rates after an appointment rose from 50 percent to 85 percent. Sessions average just 14 minutes, helping students stay engaged in learning with minimal disruption.

The Kokomo24/7 platform also simplifies the process for families: parents are notified of the appointment, give consent, and receive a summary after the visit, which eliminates the need for them to leave work or schedule separate appointments for minor health issues. For communities like Ninth Street, where healthcare access can be inconsistent, this model helps make sure that no child falls behind due to preventable absences.

Offering agility with security on AWS

As a cloud-native company, Kokomo24/7 is all-in on AWS. Its integrated platform uses AWS services like AWS Lambda, Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) to deliver reliable solutions to districts like LAUSD. AWS also helps Kokomo24/7 meet rigorous compliance requirements for student data privacy.

Role-based access capabilities also contribute to Safety Cloud’s security and ease-of-use for educators. District administrators have granular control over who has access to what data and which tools. For example, a school nurse may only access the telehealth module, while a principal can view incident reports, visitor data, and other relevant data. This modular design makes sure users see only what’s relevant to their role, which keeps data secure while also reducing unnecessary cognitive load for busy educators and administrators.

Reducing software licensing costs and preparing for the future

By consolidating multiple safety and wellness functions into a single system, Kokomo24/7 has helped LAUSD schools like Ninth Street reduce administrative overhead, improve data visibility, and save up to 60 percent in operational costs by reducing unnecessary software licenses. Kokomo24/7’s platform approach provides increased efficiency.

And because the platform is easily configurable, LAUSD and other schools can continue evolving their safety strategy—whether that means integrating AI in the future or complying with new mandates like Alyssa’s Law, which calls for the installation of silent panic alarms in schools that immediately inform local law enforcement. Kokomo24/7’s platform offers a silent panic button functionality, so schools in states that pass the law can become compliant quickly. Kokomo24/7 enables schools to future-proof their safety policies.

Empowering learning through smarter safety solutions

Technology alone doesn’t make schools safer, but when it’s designed with real student needs in mind, it becomes a powerful force for wellness, equity, and academic success.

Built on AWS, Kokomo24/7 enables districts like LAUSD to scale their safety and wellness programs with confidence. For schools like Ninth Street Elementary, this means staying focused on what truly matters: supporting student health and helping every learner thrive.
