Customer Carbon Footprint Tool

Track, measure, and review the carbon emissions generated from your AWS usage

AWS Customer Carbon Footprint Tool overview

Watch the video to learn how to track and measure your carbon emissions with the Customer Carbon Footprint Tool (CCFT).

What's new?

Scope 3 emissions data

CCFT now includes Scope 3 emissions data alongside existing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, providing the carbon impact of hardware manufacturing, buildings, equipment, and fuel and energy-related activities associated with your AWS usage.

Location-based and market-based emissions calculations

Calculate emissions using both location-based (LBM) and market-based (MBM) methods, which align with Green House Gas (GHG) Protocol standards. This lets you see your estimated carbon impact with and without AWS' carbon-free energy purchases, giving you flexibility in how you view and report your carbon footprint.

Historical emissions data

Carbon emissions data is available starting from January 2022, providing historical context for analyzing emissions changes over time across all scope categories as you migrate workloads, re-architect applications, or optimize resources.

Benefits

The CCFT methodology has been verified by an independent third party to ensure the underlying management system and GHG emissions calculations are complete and accurate.

Simplify your organization's carbon tracking by automatically receiving emissions data from your AWS accounts via Data Exports. This eliminates the need for you to manually collect data across multiple accounts. You can use the AWS Billing and Cost Management console to view your data.

You can view your carbon data in a visual breakdown by AWS Region and service.

Use cases

Save time managing carbon data across large organizations by seeing the carbon breakdown of all your member accounts in Data Exports. Instead of logging into individual accounts, access comprehensive organizational emissions data from one place.

Monitor your carbon emissions trends over time through the CCFT dashboard's historical data which provides updated historical carbon footprint data from January 2022. Review emissions and track changes as you optimize your AWS workloads, helping you measure the impact of sustainability initiatives like rightsizing, re-architecture, or resource optimization.

You can use the CCFT to identify your highest impact usage patterns. Analyze your emissions by AWS services to see which ones generate the most carbon impact, and review your regional distribution to understand how the geographic footprint affects your overall emissions profile.
