Helping New Zealand Farmers Improve Crop Yield and Protect the Environment

Producing food and feed in profitable and environmentally sustainable ways

The Foundation for Arable Research – known as FAR – has been operating in New Zealand (NZ) for over 30 years. Their mission is to help NZ growers and farmers produce food and feed in a way that is profitable and environmentally sustainable. Today FAR have about 3,000 growers in their membership group and they grow everything from maize to barley to radish seed.

One of FAR’s greatest challenges was getting the right information into the hands of their customers. The FAR website contained more than 30 years’ worth of research and information on it. This was really difficult for growers to sort through quickly and get relevant answers.

Ask FAR Virtual Assistant

To solve this issue FAR worked with AWS partner Custom D to build a new virtual assistant called ‘Ask FAR’. Ask FAR now helps growers and farmers quickly and easily find the specific information about the specific crop and the specific problem that they are trying to address.

When we’re out scouting the fields looking for problems or we’re planning we’ve got to make quick decisions as to what we’re going do. Diseases and insect pressure and everything it’s changing every day. We need something that’s accessible and easy to use. With ‘Ask FAR’ I can get my phone out and get answers straightaway.
