Overview

Delivery Hero set out to strengthen cloud capabilities as it scaled its cloud-native infrastructure across 65 countries. To support this, the company worked with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Training and Certification to upskill teams at its Berlin headquarters. Through a mix of instructor-led training and AWS Skill Builder courses, more than 900 employees built AWS expertise. This helped accelerate innovation, support PCI DSS compliance, and improve agility across fintech and logistics, while establishing a foundation for long-term cloud maturity.

About Delivery Hero

A Germany-based company listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Delivery Hero operates a local delivery platform across around 65 countries in Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. Founded in 2011, the company has expanded from food delivery to quick commerce, delivering groceries and household goods in under an hour, often within 20 to 30 minutes, as it continues to scale its global operations.

Opportunity | Equipping teams for the next phase of cloud growth

Delivery Hero is a global local delivery platform operating in around 65 countries across Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. Founded in 2011, the company has evolved into a quick commerce provider—delivering groceries and household essentials in under an hour, often within 20 to 30 minutes, as it continues to scale its cloud-native operations.

As the business grew, so did the need to strengthen AWS expertise across teams to improve performance, support innovation, and maintain high operational standards. However, varying levels of knowledge created inconsistencies in how AWS was used. In 2022, an AWS Learning Needs Analysis identified strong demand for structured training alongside gaps in foundational knowledge—highlighting the need for a more coordinated, organization-wide upskilling approach.

“Our goal was to help employees build AWS skills as adoption grew. We focused on a common foundation so teams could use AWS consistently and effectively across our products,” says Simonetta Dsouza, director of learning & leadership development at Delivery Hero.

Solution | Building role-based learning programs through collaboration

In collaboration with AWS Training and Certification, Delivery Hero launched a multi-phase training program in 2022, starting with its headquarters team in Berlin. The initiative began with AWS Technical Essentials to build a strong foundation in cloud fundamentals, initially targeting software engineers and technical roles before expanding across fintech, platform, logistics, and advertising teams.

As learners progressed, they advanced into intermediate and specialist courses, including Advanced Architecting, Developing Serverless Solutions on AWS, Building Data Lakes on AWS, and Generative AI for Developers. To support different learning preferences, Delivery Hero introduced AWS Skill Builder in 2024, offering flexible, self-paced learning alongside AWS SimuLearn for simulation-based training.

The program also adapted to specific team needs. For example, when a team preparing to re-architect its order-to-cash lifecycle using AWS Step Functions identified a knowledge gap, AWS delivered a hands-on workshop and provided guidance throughout the implementation.

From planning and facilitation to post-training engagement, AWS worked closely with Delivery Hero’s learning and development team to keep the program relevant and scalable. “The AWS team has acted as a blueprint for how we want to partner with external providers,” said Reeta Outila, senior learning partner at Delivery Hero.

Outcome | Enabling 900+ Employees to build cloud and AI skills at scale

Through its upskilling program, Delivery Hero equipped more than 900 employees with AWS expertise, helping teams work more independently across critical services. Engineers gained hands-on experience with services such as Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), Amazon Simple Queue Service (Amazon SQS), Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS), and Amazon ElastiCache, improving how they deploy, manage, and troubleshoot workloads.

As a result, teams reduced development time for major features and accelerated deployment of simpler updates, improving overall delivery speed across the organization. The training also supported PCI DSS certification efforts, strengthening how teams manage and secure payment data in the cloud.

“Migrating to AWS over 12 months was essential for compliance and alignment with our cloud strategy. AWS Skill Builder’s self-paced learning and hands-on labs helped us stay on track with project deadlines and deliver on our strategic goals,” says Mert Aydin, principal software engineer at Delivery Hero.

The program also supported broader cloud initiatives. For example, the Customer Search team used AWS Skill Builder to complete its migration from Google Cloud Platform to AWS in just 12 months, while maintaining strong engagement, with 78 percent of users actively participating in training.

Rodrigue Schäfer, vice president, tech foundations at Delivery Hero, adds, “AWS has been a great partner in helping us scale our cloud capabilities and empower our team. Its training programs have given our people the skills and confidence to innovate, experiment, and build better solutions faster.”
