Bringing Data Analytics to Customer Cloud Environments Using AWS with Panalgo

IHD is Panalgo’s flagship healthcare analytics solution that has changed the way pharma and life sciences teams conduct data analysis—replacing complex programming and yielding results in minutes. Organizations in the life sciences frequently handle sensitive health data and must comply with stringent regulatory requirements related to data sovereignty and security, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, General Data Protection Regulation, and HITRUST. By controlling the environment in which their data resides, they can increase governance and maintain data security to comply with regional and global regulations.

Using AWS features and services, Panalgo developed IHD Cloud, a solution that can be deployed directly within customer cloud environments. Panalgo chose AWS for its comprehensive support services and for the go-to-market opportunities that it could gain by joining the AWS Partner Network. “The support provided by the AWS team is above and beyond,” says Erik Maul, senior director of real-world evidence partnerships at Panalgo. “Building the deployed offering on AWS made the most sense for both Panalgo and our clients.”

Panalgo’s flexible, portable, and scalable solution is powered by several AWS services, such as AWS Fargate, a serverless, pay-as-you-go compute engine. Using AWS Fargate, Panalgo can dynamically scale the containers hosting IHD’s application logic to efficiently manage customer workloads and meet their data analysis demands seamlessly.

Panalgo’s IHD Cloud solution uses Amazon EMR, a cloud big data solution, and Amazon EMR Serverless, which runs big data applications without managing clusters or servers, to run the company’s complex analytic workloads on large data volumes. Using Amazon EMR and AWS Fargate, Panalgo’s customers benefit from virtually limitless scale while maintaining cost efficiency. “This solution is the next stage in the evolution of IHD,” says Eric Girouard, vice president of engineering for Panalgo. “We focused our design on the tenants of security, cost efficiency, resiliency, and portability. The comprehensive suite of AWS services simplified our adherence to these principles.”

Through these advancements, customers will be able to accelerate their time to insights, in house and affordably. “The median runtime for projects will be around 100 seconds instead of the days that traditional programming can take,” says April Duddy, vice president of operations at Panalgo. “Being able to process that much patient-level information and get a response so quickly will be extremely beneficial for our clients.”

Panalgo plans to bring this deployed offering to market by 2025 and will make it available through AWS Marketplace, where customers can discover, deploy, and manage software that runs on AWS.
