    Public Relations and Communications

Comprehensive media monitoring service.

  • May 18, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Allows you to quickly scan and keep track of news on various channels (print, social media, etc).
What do you dislike about the product?
At the time that we were using it, it was mainly a media monitoring service. However, they now provide other services including media distributions, which is a step in the right direction.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Media monitoring and reports of coverage.

Great for Tracking Mentions

  • May 17, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Meltwater keeps expanding in its services (they just added a sprout social component) but multiple parties at our organization find it useful. It tracks press mentions and social mentions as well us keep track of influencers. You can track news, buzz, and reach through its variant platforms.
What do you dislike about the product?
The services are spread out so it's a little disorienting for some admins to understand all the tool capabilities. It's also a little pricey plus your subscription is automatically renewed of 60 days notice is not given. Be aware of the prices when signing on. Sometimes a few of the tools get a little wonky but that usually is fixed without a hitch.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're using it for analytics with social media, PR, who's mentioning our organization and which groups we want to track to make sure they're aware of our product.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It can add up but is probably the best software for tracking press mentions. Definitely read the small print before putting in your billing information. Your subscription is automatically renewed of 60 days notice is not given.

Marketing Communications Specialist

What do you like best about the product?
That I could search for recent articles written about a certain topic
What do you dislike about the product?
The media database. I was not able to find producers for segments. It was just a general title
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
media database
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Not a good tool for media database

Obnoxious sales reps, decent product

  • May 11, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I really like the ability to have use other products for TV and print monitoring in tandem with meltwater if they use an rss feed and if you have premium subscriptions to news outlets you can add those via rss feed into the portal, which gives you one portal for all of your media monitoring needs.
I also like the ability to the reach of each given article and to see where it has been picked up.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike that you have to pay extra to include premium outlets such as the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal. I also dislike the aggressive sales calls, and the attempts to up-sell every year, as it is not a cheap product to begin with.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I just use the media monitoring side of it, I have not tried any of its other uses although others in my company do.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Use the ability to sync RSS feeds from other services to create one portal. Also download reports often so you can check all the stats easily.
You can also get more detailed information by downloading the reports than you can just in the portal. It is also possible to go farther back in these reports than just the last 90 days.

Media monitoring platform with a clean interface and some powerful features.

  • May 10, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The platform has a clean interface and powerful search features that can be applied retrospectively.
What do you dislike about the product?
Unable to export search results as a PDF. Seems to be missing a number of content providers that are picked up by competing platforms. News and social are handled separately, which eats into the number of searches we have.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Generally works as a tool for picking up mentions of our brand and other topics we are intereste din.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Conduct a thorough trial and make sure it meets your needs before committing.

Just couldn't get it.

What do you like best about the product?
I would guess that Meltwater is a pretty robust media monitoring tool for the right company.
What do you dislike about the product?
We could never get the news filtering into our searches to be clean and usable. We could never get to a point where we could send out an alert to members of the management team because there was always an extraneous article (or 10) being pulled into any feed we made. I get that "Belden" is a last name and the name of a town, but we could just never get the news we needed no matter how many filters we put in place.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It actually caused more problems than it solved, unfortunately. I spent many hours trying to get it up and running only to have our marketing teams reject it.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you have a common company name, be prepared to spend a lot of time developing filters and keywords to get at the news you want to see.

Incredible, Professional Tool. Translates Real Coverage into Usable Data

  • May 09, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the ease of searching for contacts in new markets and with specific beats. I also find the daily digests of coverage extremely useful. They are timely, I like to be able to see the coverage or mentions BEFORE my colleagues do. It's nice not to have to go to the native sites to find mentions.
What do you dislike about the product?
Merging contacts in the Meltwater system with my manually-made contact lists has been a struggle. I live/work in Tahoe (many influential contacts are not included in Meltwater lists) so I'd like to more seamlessly add contacts simply by adding their email, rather than making a full journalistic profile.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are finding new markets to connect with and distribute content.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure you get a platform tour! I learned so much by being walked through every button and feature. It's challenging to navigate as a new user and is constantly improving, so it's best to have a pro show you the ins and outs :)

Not Bad But Don't Know That It is a Must

  • May 09, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The database and search aggregators are useful, overpriced, everything comes in a separate module so you have to buy a ton of products for all features
What do you dislike about the product?
the articles that it pulls are not as comprehensive as I would like (articles behind paywalls don't get pulled, for example) and it is not quite as user friendly as desired
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
finding articles about the company or related to our interests for social media, media database for press releases,
Recommendations to others considering the product:
it is an expensive product but if you have a plan for how to make the most of it, it is worth it.

It's useful, but know it's limitations before you sign (and meet the much detested auto-renewal)

  • May 09, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Daily alerts, monthly newsletter creation save time and alert you to any 'big picture' activity each morning.
What do you dislike about the product?
Journalist content information is wholly unreliable. You will need to access another platform (for me, that's FeaturesExec from DWP). Any changes that you suggest to Meltwater are unlikely to ever appear, in short, just don't rely on the contact information at all. Your list entries are not updated against live versions, therefore you have to recreate each list at least once a year manually - or ask your account manager to do this for you.
Worst feature (as is detailed so much in the reviews ) is their very poor sales model. My biggest issue is not actually the 60 day auto renewal, it's the fact that they delight in first selling the service to PRs/Consultants; then once your Client data is loaded, they offer clients direct a monitoring package, often with greater service levels (countries covered) and at a cheaper price still than the bargain bucket price that you think you have negotiated. This has caught me so many times. The client ends up with a service they don't really need or know how to use and us PRs are unable to provide a clipping service as it is now entirely at our own cost.
Also note, one of the senior directors at Meltwater was involed in a bitter legal challenge with the NLA in the UK in 2013 over the rights to forward clippings. He then went on to run the NLA (Newspaper Licensing Authority). It could be a remarkable co-incidence, but after that happened all the PRs on the system were then hit with annual NLA Licence costs for forwarding clippings onward!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Daily notifications and a quick and easy way of forwarding a newsletter to clients each month vs Excle based coverage reports
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Just be aware of the business implications and consider the tool as a daily delivery aid not a method of outbound comms to journalists

    Public Relations and Communications

Good way to get media contacts quickly.

  • May 09, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like how quick it is to find contacts.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't think it is updated as often as it should be - I often times still have to research contacts on my own.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Quick contacts for media.
