Simple deployment, exceptional restore capability, and seamlessly data recovery

  • May 17, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My customers rely on Veeam Backup & Replication primarily to safeguard their systems, secure their workloads, and support hybrid cloud and multi-cloud environments. It allows them to back up their data across various cloud platforms and perform cross-platform restoration. For instance, they can back up VMware and restore it on Azure, among other scenarios. In addition to this, they can efficiently back up mainstream applications such as VMware Internet workloads, Microsoft Hyper-V, and Microsoft applications, such as Active Directory, Exchange, and more.

The solution can be deployed on the cloud and on-premise.

What is most valuable?

One of the standout features of Veeam Backup & Replication is its exceptional restore capability, enabling users to recover their data seamlessly. Another valuable functionality is the automated verification of backup restorations, made possible through the Sure Backup feature. The software boasts numerous other noteworthy features that offer immense value, including the NAS backup feature.

What needs improvement?

There is room for improvement in the application backups, particularly for Oracle and SaaS systems. Veeam Backup & Replication offers a plugin specifically designed for Oracle and SAP HANA databases. In version twelve, they introduced enhancements that allow deploying the plugin from the backup server. However, manual configuration is still required on each server to schedule the backup and specify the backup repository. Additionally, transitioning from a Windows server to a Linux server requires converting the existing model. Previously, Veeam heavily relied on Windows and Microsoft SQL databases for their solution. Fortunately, in version twelve, they introduced an enhancement by offering the option to use a Postgres SQL database, which is an open-source alternative.

In a future version, it would be highly advantageous for the vendor to introduce a specific feature that addresses an important customer need. Many enterprise customers utilize deduplication appliances for storing their backups, particularly when compliance requirements demand data encryption during transit and at rest. While the current solution offers encryption during transit, there is a limitation when it comes to seamless integration with deduplication appliances. When encryption is enabled, backups are directed to a standard repository. Subsequently, enterprises are compelled to store encrypted backups on a staging repository before transferring them to the deduplication appliance. This approach affects deduplication ratios. Ideally, it would be beneficial for enterprises if there was a way to seamlessly encrypt backups on the staging repository and then move them to the deduplication appliance in their encrypted format without impacting deduplication ratios. Such an integration would greatly benefit enterprise customers.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup & Replication for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

I rate the stability of Veeam Backup & Replication an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veeam Backup & Replication demonstrates impressive scalability through its modular architecture. By utilizing multiple proxies and repositories, users can effectively distribute the workload and achieve load balancing. This scalability feature allows the solution to adapt and accommodate varying environments. Thus far, there haven't been any encountered scenarios where scaling became a significant challenge.

We are focusing on enterprise customers at this time.

I rate the scalability of Veeam Backup & Replication an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The support provided by Veeam Backup & Replication is truly exceptional and highly responsive. Whenever I encounter any issues on-site, I can confidently open a support case and reach out to their toll-free number. Their support team promptly connects with me and offers remote assistance almost instantly. While the quality of engineers may vary, Veeam has a commendable escalation process in place. If I encounter any difficulties with an engineer, I have the option to request a change or escalate the issue to a manager, who can assign a higher-tier engineer to provide the necessary support for the solution.

I rate the support from Veeam Backup & Replication a ten out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Veeam Backup & Replication is simple. However, the difficulty of integrating it with an environment comes down to the type of environment, it details that can take time.

The implementation process for Veeam Backup & Replication involves several essential steps. Firstly, you engage in planning activities such as sizing and designing the solution, ensuring that all three prerequisites are met. Once the planning is complete, you proceed to download the software and initiate the installation and integration process. This includes configuring firewall ports to be open and defining antivirus exclusions to optimize performance. Additionally, you need to manage permissions on the target machines that you intend to back up. These are just a few examples of the tasks involved in the implementation process.

I rate the initial setup of Veeam Backup & Replication an eight out of ten.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Compared to other enterprise solutions, Veeam Backup & Replication generally offers a competitive price point. However, there has been a noticeable and concerning increase in pricing, particularly in the year 2023. The rate of price hikes has been significant, with prices escalating three times during the first quarter of the year. This trend indicates a substantial shift in the pricing structure, which may have implications for customers and their budgeting considerations.

The pricing model of Veeam Backup & Replication differs from other vendors in the industry. While many backup vendors base their pricing on the amount of storage in terabytes, Veeam opts for a server-based pricing approach. This server-based pricing has traditionally been more appealing to end customers, offering a simpler and more straightforward cost structure. However, as Veeam continues to grow and expand, it is encountering challenges in managing costs with this pricing model. From our company's perspective, the terabyte-based pricing model is more convenient and preferable.

There are not any additional costs other than the standard licensing fees.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam Backup & Replication is an excellent choice for those seeking a generic backup solution. It caters to a wide range of requirements and fulfills approximately 80 percent of the market's needs. Customers running VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix workloads, and more can readily utilize Veeam Backup & Replication. However, for those with highly customized or specific workloads, a more tailored solution might be necessary. While Veeam Backup & Replication is versatile and widely applicable, certain niche requirements may call for a specialized backup solution beyond the generic features of Veeam Backup & Replication.

I rate Veeam Backup & Replication an eight out of ten.

A good management tool that offers a very good technical support

  • May 08, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Veeam ONE is a very good management product. With Veeam, you can control the underlying virtualization environment, along with VMware and Hyper-V. So, the product works with tools from other vendors.

What is most valuable?

The fact that it can make very good reports on Veeam Backup is a valuable feature. It offers very flexible reporting.

What needs improvement?

Improvement is required in infrastructure control because it generates reports on the infrastructure.

It would be good. It could be extended with, for example, collecting data from storage devices because you have the environment, which includes servers and storage devices. So, it would be good to have such integrations. It should have the ability to collect data from storage devices.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam ONE for a year and a half. My company is a reseller and partner of the solution.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, I rate the solution an eight or nine out of ten. Only three or four system administrators are using it.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support is very good, and I think it's one of the best. The response time is very quick.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

There are other products for virtualization, but not for Veeam. I don't know any other product that covers Veeam, VMware, and Hyper V.

How was the initial setup?

The solution's initial setup process is not very complex. The setup phase is not difficult. Creating reports is a bit difficult, and you have to spend some time on it.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation was done with the help of our in-house team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veeam ONE is offered at a good price. Compared to its price, the functionality and features of the product are more important.

What other advice do I have?

Regarding the complexity of the processes in the solution, I would say that it is complex even though it is easy to solve. For a complex environment, I would definitely recommend the use of Veeam ONE. Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Useful growth tracking, overview tracking, but increasingly complex

  • May 03, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I am demonstrating specific reporting capabilities of Veeam ONE to customers, which includes a valuable yet lesser-known feature that enables the creation of a VIZIO diagram for the entire VMware cluster, displaying all servers that can be further explored. This feature is highly beneficial as it can create a comprehensive video diagram of the entire infrastructure, including servers, storage, and connected devices, in just one hour, whereas doing it manually would take weeks. However, the feature is not widely known and needs to be located in the software. It is an invaluable feature that can almost pay for itself if utilized.

The purpose of using this solution is to estimate the need for expansion and growth. This involves monitoring the number of restores, daily usage patterns, and the timing of tool usage. The primary objective is to ensure successful backups and that they occur as scheduled. You must examine any growth patterns that you detect, whether on a daily or weekly basis and analyze the number of restores you perform. This is particularly beneficial for sizing your target and determining retention capacity for both on-premises and cloud scalability. All the data and reporting aid in assessing the size, growth, and availability of your data, as well as its overall success.

How has it helped my organization?

The Veeam ONE diagram is a relatively unknown feature that is only available in the solution. This tool enables you to create an overview of your entire infrastructure, based on your VMware cluster, and delve deeper to obtain specific information about each server, including how they are interconnected and their respective names. Having this tool at your disposal is undoubtedly valuable.

What is most valuable?

The most beneficial aspect of Veeam ONE is the ability to track your company's growth on a month-to-month basis. With this tool, you can determine if you need to purchase more target storage or if you have enough. This is essential for budgeting purposes, as, without this information, you may discover too late that you require additional storage or that your cloud usage is not aligning with what you are being charged. Veeam ONE aids in forecasting and usage analysis, making it a valuable asset.

What needs improvement?

One common customer complaint is that Veeam, not just Veeam ONE, has become increasingly complex over time. This means that it is now very feature-rich, which can be challenging for some users to navigate and understand. There is a need for more education on how to use the GUI and all of the available features. Even regular users of Veeam may struggle to utilize the new features, which makes it more challenging for backup administrators to manage their backups. The platform is not becoming simpler, but rather, it is becoming more complicated over time.

It would be helpful if Veeam ONE allowed a view of all of your repositories in a single panel, rather than having to check multiple repositories separately. This consolidated view would provide better visibility on the target repository, which can be very helpful.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam ONE for approximately three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Veeam ONE does not need scalability. However, scalability becomes a consideration when assessing the ease of adding repositories and storage to the back end via the VIN GUI. Fortunately, this process is not particularly difficult.

We sell Veeam ONE to 50 percent of our engagements.

How are customer service and support?

The support from Veeam ONE is excellent.

How was the initial setup?

The setup process for Veeam ONE can be complicated, depending on your usage. It is not a straightforward process. You need to establish a Veeam ONE server, which is something that many users may not be aware of. It is necessary to dedicate a Veeam server as either a standalone or a VM for a VM server, which adds complexity to the initial setup process.

What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment using Veeam ONE because it helps in sizing, scaling, and projection.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing structure for Veeam ONE has changed to what is now called the "VUL" or "Universal License". Previously, people mainly used socket licenses, but this has now changed. The new pricing structure was introduced last year.

The concept of the universal license for Veeam ONE still needs to be explained more to customers. While Veeam ONE is still a good option in terms of pricing, it's important to note that it's only the software component, and a target appliance is also required. This is different from the full appliances and software options like Rubrik and Cohesity. It's crucial to understand that Veeam ONE is not the complete backup solution, but rather a part of it that needs to be combined with additional components.

What other advice do I have?

Veeam ONE has a lot of great features, and it's worth spending time exploring its capabilities. The video diagram feature is especially valuable because it's easy to use and provides significant benefits in addition to Veeam ONE's reporting.

I rate Veeam ONE a seven out of ten.

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The flexibility of Veeam is what sold us. It can do anything, with most any hardware. The product is very easy to use and configure. The premium platform comes with DR orchestration as well and that was another selling point for us.
What do you dislike about the product?
This is still a new purchase for us, so we have yet to encounter something that we have not liked. Maybe the need for a 3rd party device to do immutable backups. But that can be overcome by doing your own Linux repo.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is solving the need for VMWARE Site Recovery Manager. We no longer need licenses for that, with the built in DR orchestrator. It is also solving our previous lack of immutable backups.
