Veeam Backup & Replication: The True Backup Solution

  • May 25, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Veeam Backup & Replication allows for complete backups of all sorts of machines. Allows me to have a one-stop-shop for all my virtual machines as well as physical hardware. Their interface is very user-friendly and easy to use. If the scenario ever comes along where you need to recover to a backup, the process is very painless and easy. Scheduling backups is a breeze as well.
What do you dislike about the product?
Their software updates seem to bring in more bugs than there were before, but they are quick to resolve those issues with patches.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Veeam Backup & Replication for our server and machine backup solution. Running daily at varying times, we backup every workstation and server. Our benefits are an easy-to-use program that allows a safety net of sorts for if something goes wrong.

Veeam Backup & Replication

What do you like best about the product?
Good, logical wizard driven interface making it simple to create and configure jobs. Good level of information provided during and after jobs.
What do you dislike about the product?
The inability to have the product detect new VM's on hosts and make suggestions for adding them into an existing job.
Inability for Veeam to detect when a VM has been powered off for a set duration and exclude it from backup job/s.

Both would be incredibly helpful.

The new licensing model is convoluted, unclear and now makes purchasing your product more expensive for most. Compared with the competition Veeam is now a very expensive product and I'm aware of multiple vendors who are recommending alternatives purely based on cost/better value.

Similarly, the inability to add more 'packs' of licences to your existing subscription is odd and means you end up with more than one renewal date, again, not helpful and off-putting. Certainly something to reconsider and find a solution to.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ability to have an offsite backup for DR and full bare metal backups of all VM's with great retention periods. Also we now have much improved RPO and RTO's.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Ensure you have the relevant admin credentials for all your VM's and where possible standardise them. It'll make your life much easier when administering the product. We encountered and still do encounter headaches due to the complexity of our environment, namely being an edtech business with so many VM's and workloads to protect.

Structure your jobs so you have high levels of retention periods across dailies for x days, weeklies for x weeks and monthlies for x months. Also ensure you have an offsite and full mitigation and DR/BCP plan which is regularly tested. More important for some businesses with specific requirements, compliance needs etc than others.

Veeam is a robust and affordable backup solution for VMs and Physical Servers

  • October 27, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Price, features and reliability. Great value compared to Acronis.
What do you dislike about the product?
Lack of VMWARE Workstation and older VMWARE VM Products
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Backing up a plethora of VMs and Physical Machines onsite
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider Veeam before alternatives like Acronis - you will get the same features for 1/4th the price. Doesn't leave a large footprint on servers either.

Must have for backing up virtual machines

What do you like best about the product?
Having used Veeam at a couple of different organisations, I have been very happy with the product. Mainly using the virtual machine backup tools, I find that this is simply a must have for virtual environments. The granularity of the restores is particularly helpful, especially when dealing with large file systems. The GUI for the B&R app is simple to use and setting up new back up tasks is pretty straight forward. It does take a little while to get used to how they set up their backups, using the 3 2 1 method, but once you have an understanding of that, it become vital to the backup operations. When compared to other backup products I've used from other vendors, the choice to me is quite clear to use Veeam. I've found other backup products tend to have clunky UIs and sometimes unreliable backups. I'm also a fan of backup to disk and cloud over tape, which often can cause it's own problems. The speed of restore from Veeam is another benefit that I've found to be really helpful, as often when a user reports a file is missing they need it back immediately. Something that's not always possible when dealing with tape backups, even though Veeam can do that as well. I had used this previously to back up physical machines as well, when dealing with older 2003 servers that had yet to be decommissioned. That resolved a lot of headaches to keep us going through until they were migrated.
What do you dislike about the product?
They can sting you with their support contract pricing. It's important to keep on top of that otherwise you'll end up with a large bill.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It's used for the general day to day backup of most servers and provides an easy way to restore files.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Check the terms on the support contracts and it works best if all your servers are virtual.

Solid product, hope development continues on cloud storage options.

What do you like best about the product?
Recovery of individual files is fast and simple. Backups are reliable. They offer the offloading of backups to a cloud provider, but it's not super intuitive. There's a free local computer backup agent to backup local PCs to the same location as our cluster.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is reliance on a local storage medium at the moment. The functionality around SOBR did not seem well documented unless you work with a third party vendor such as Exagrid. There was quite a bit of tuning required to get our large backups to fully dedupe as expected. We've been attempting to expand our licensing and have had difficulty getting an engineer on the phone to discuss our needs. Licensing for anything beyond 6 CPU sockets is a large jump.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are backing up a VMware cluster environment. Primary use is file recovery for a large 7TB file server and a 500GB git solution. Our backups are much more reliable than our previous product and recovery of those files is very simple and I've never had an issue restoring an individual file.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Speak with a storage vendor at the same time. Their integrations and engineering support with Exagrid, Dell, or HPE are top notch.

Veeam

What do you like best about the product?
Backups are easy to set up and configure. Data recovery was extremely fast. What I also like about it is the possibility to run the VM from the backup.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not yet. It would be nice to be able to copy/examine several databases at once.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We managed to beat our tape dependency and make some backups, giving us more headaches than we could save. Using Veeam's services, we were able to extend our RPO with a wider range of recovery options for relatively small storage areas that only existed a few hours ago.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Remember to consider your current support. Assure yourself of five years of support on your first purchase. It is a lot cheaper to buy in advance and wake up later.

Backuping files from cloud is excellent for our company's profile.

What do you like best about the product?
Veeam program is actually easy, simple to operate and capable of duplicating job on remote servers, and that is extremely surprising. It simply works. In addition to the simplicity of controlling backups to end products, you will have to search for another method which are able to do the exact same for the business of yours!
What do you dislike about the product?
Additional license charges for internet backups. Competitive systems here have cost and strength. With the incorporated Terminal Backup License you are able to determine just one backup task.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Veeam has resolved the 2 most prominent issues for us. Replicating of our creation system to a DR webpage and replication of the VM's functioning. Backing up endpoints has long been a huge headache and an incredibly costly area. Now we can backup any kind of files and any kind of documents won't be lost.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
In case you're backing up the virtual environment of yours, this is the very best item.
