Tableau Server: Easy to Get Started, and Maintain

  • October 18, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It took only minutes to set up. Soon thereafter we were publishing models for users to utilize.
It takes little to manage Tableau Server on an ongoing basis.
What do you dislike about the product?
Tableau Server does not offer any solution for version control on its published models.
I also found it difficult at times to discover the root causes of failed scheduled tasks.
It would be nice to have some more optimization tools in order to get the most out of the models being offered and the resources required to refresh the data on an ongoing basis,

Pricing to expose Tableau models on websites is expensive.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have realized countless business problems over many knowledge areas.
Most importantly, we have moved from a model of printing/emailing reports to Branch Managers on a daily basis, most of which was ignored, or far too much time was required of them to analyse to one that allows them to get information on demand, that is drillable and flexible enough to allow for ad-hoc discovery.

This has allowed us to be more agile.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Tableau Software was very supportive of our efforts to deploy Tableau Server. They offered copious amounts of help, and made resources available to us when required. We are not a big account for them, but were not treated as an afterthought.

We would recommend to start small. It is fast to start, and with little prototyping the results will quickly justifying further investment.

What do you like best about the product?
Data loading is a breeze. The interface is simple and easy to use. The visualizations are wonderful.
What do you dislike about the product?
Takes a while to process large datasets. Creating an extract helps but not all the times. Need to have data formatted in the right format to to anything worthwhile.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Big data visualizations. We have been able to offer our members so much more now that we use tableau. Visualizations and data manipulation is easy and can be done in a matter of minutes. Plus the data is all right there if a member wants to see a certain cut.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try the free desktop version to visualize data. The best way to get used to it is to just start playing around. You will love what you come out with!

What do you like best about the product?
An easy reporting tool to start with for a beginner. Ability to connect many data sources and create impressive looking visualizations easily. Let's you to create compelling, interactive visualizations on your own with just drag & drop.

Plugins / addons that it supports (R integration).
Tableau provides API's that supports to automate functionalities like automatic deployment & extract.
What do you dislike about the product?
Very expensive in terms of license.
Documentation & Tutorials - It can be hard to find the documentation for specific features.
Data formatting issues.
Data model is all about queries, slow down the processing when you have a considerable amount of data loaded
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have moved most of our internal reporting solutions to tableau in no time.
Tableau helps us to resolve most of our operational reporting needs whereas MicroStrategy helps in business reporting needs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you need highly sophisticated, interactive, customizable visualizations and a powerful desktop analytics engine, Tableau is becoming an industry standard.

Give it a shot, more powerful than most of the analytics tool.
Ease of use needs some work though.

What do you like best about the product?
Implements Few and Tufte's best practices, making it easier to design and develop clear, understandable visualization. Allows you to explore data visually and make connections that you wouldn't see in a table. Allows you to test out several different visualizations quickly and efficiently.
What do you dislike about the product?
Needs better data wrangling capabilities so that I don't have to do so much pre-work with the data.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Creating attractive visualizations and dashboards for senior management
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Not a replacement for your standard BI when it comes to reports, tables, etc, but far superior in terms of visualizations and dashboards, and very easy to get started with.

Easy-to-learn, easy-to-use data visualization tool

  • August 20, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The best part about Tableau, I feel, is the drag-and-drop interface. This helps any novice user to learn the tool and start using it very quickly. Filters and parameters provide a nice touch of interactivity to visualizations.
What do you dislike about the product?
Lack of templates for commonly-used visualizations such as donuts, radars and speedometers which makes the user resort to workarounds.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am a management consultant and I've worked predominantly with manufacturing companies. I've used Tableau to create visualizations that enabled my clients to reduce procurement costs, monitor building HVAC systems, identify bottlenecks in shop floor operations etc. In the procurement scenario, we found that the client would be able to save $2.00 on each order of a specific part if they procured it from a different supplier. In another situation, we were able to identify process bottlenecks, the elimination of which would enable the client to produce 30 more products per month.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Will recommend it over Microsoft Power BI.
