Excellent Product
What do you like best about the product?
The ability to create customised application monitors. As a government department we utilise hundreds of bespoke application that do not provide monitoring tools. Using Server and Application Monitor I can create custom monitors that show when the application is not performing well and can replicate the end-user experience. It also has "out of the box" large application monitors by default (Exchange/Active Directory/SQL/IIS)
What do you dislike about the product?
A lot of customisation is required to create your own templates.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The monitoring of applications that do not have monitoring tools built in.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you already have an investment in solarwinds then it's a no brainer
Very flexible and customisable solution for monitoring applications
What do you like best about the product?
The ability to write your own monitoring scripts and the community library of scripts
What do you dislike about the product?
It takes a while for the supplied monitoring scripts to catch up with the newer OS and Application releases
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Knowing about application and infrastructure outages before the users know.
SAM knows how to provide insight into your Apps.
What do you like best about the product?
Server & Application Monitor provides us insight into our key enterprise applications out of the box. Active Directory performance, Exchange on premise, and MS SQL. We have used them all to identify the root cause of incidents. It is not always something within our control but it can gives the information we need to talk with vendors and application owners.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are some many templates available with different types of components that it is a blessing and a curse. It can be hard to find the exact right mix of monitoring components for your environment.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Taking our application monitoring beyond the server level performance. Being 99% virtual, the server hardware rarely comes into play. It is all about how the application is behaving on top of all the other layers. SAM lets us look into that level. For example, AppInsight for SQL let us see into our document management application's queries on the MS SQL instance. This allowed us to build new indexes on tables to help improve the applications performance.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The licensing is by component not application. An application on a single server can have dozens of components to monitor. So make sure you size your purchase appropriately.
NTA - Changed how we view our network
What do you like best about the product?
Ability to drill into the nodes and quickly determine the cause of high utilization or an outage.
What do you dislike about the product?
It takes time to get everything setup and configured to meet your needs, but once it is done it is worth it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
High traffic utilization, link changes and types of traffic on our network.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Ensure you understand how the Node count works, so you don't get in a bind for your licenses.
SolarWinds SAM - Most feasible and optimal monitoring solution for Systems & Application Monitoring
What do you like best about the product?
For me SolarWinds Orion Suite of products is everything that i need to monitor my infrastructure and SAM is one such critical pieces which is a feast, let me give you an overview on its capabilities and whats best i like about the module
1. Easy to install, administrators or monitoring engineers would love the tool for what it is.
2. Easy to manage and license the product
3. Discover your infrastructure within no time into SAM and start monitoring the same.
4. Provides great dashboards which can be customized to any extent (views)
5. Provides great alerting and can be customized to any extent
6. Provides great reporting features
7. Provides good amount of authentication to login into the tool
8. Data at rest and in transit can be encrypted
9. Can consume SNMP Traps from underlying infrastructure
10. Can consume syslog messages from underlying infrastructure
11. Base monitoring (device up/down, cpu, memory, disk utilization) could be enabled in no time on the
12. Provides Hardware Health monitors
13. Provides Asset Inventory
14. Can manage process, service, tasks and events in real time
15. You could build an Application Template in no time with component monitors in it to monitor your applications and same could be reused as and when required to 'n' of devices (there are close to about 49 component monitors which does it all - script monitors, File monitors,db monitors, directory monitors, process/service monitors, URL monitors, Pool, JMX, SOAP, Apache, Tomcat etc .....)
16. There are some cool alert actions that could be triggered when an alert is triggered on SolarWinds SAM (actions like sending an email, calling an external script, creating a ticket, calling a vb script, resolving certain issues using restart or other commands etc .......)
17 . It as well provides some cool features like AppInsight
There are several other features along with whats mentioned above (like Perfstack etc ......)

What do you dislike about the product?
I cant think of it for now, its been a great tool so far and with new features coming in every now and then I am pretty happy with it. SolarWinds have been pretty aggressive in releasing new features and they have done a great job till date and I hoping they would continue in the same fashion going ahead.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Most Business Critical applications for our clients are being monitored via SolarWinds Orion platform and as mentioned above its been a feast to me as I come from a monitoring background and my primary role is keep the monitoring going which is apt to the client at any given point of time.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
SolarWinds SAM is a great tool for systems and application monitoring and fits in for any size and scale, I have been using this tool for quite a while and have implemented it for multiple customers.
SAM is a good product with a some work
What do you like best about the product?
I think the SAM product is very good at what it can monitor. I would highly suggest that you spend a lot of time trying to decide what needs to be monitored and what doesn't. The applications are monitored and you are able to see the history of any issues that occurred that is great.
What do you dislike about the product?
The licenses is crazy. When using the SAM for certain applications you will notice one application can consume 20-100 licenses depending on what you monitor. With that said you will under buy your licenses. Just to be clear the SAM is good but just use the demonstration so you can get the number of licenses required to monitor all of your applications.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to see deeper into just server up, down or high memory or low disk space. We are able to see when the actual application is having a problem. This helps in diagnosing when help desk calls.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would highly recommend using the trial software. You must know how many licenses that you need otherwise you will consume way more product licenses than expected.
Robust Performance Monitoing Tool
What do you like best about the product?
It's ability to handle real time monitoring from server to application. The alerts that can be set up so that users can get
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't think there are any specific areas that I don't/didn't like about SAM.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monitoing all the servers (Windows as well as Unix).
monitoring agent makes surface triage simple and fast
What do you like best about the product?
the drill down features make identifying issues in term meaningful to a developer great.
What do you dislike about the product?
At this time I have not had any issues with this product
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
SQL issues mostly
Fan of SAM
What do you like best about the product?
Building our own application monitors for custom programs. Being able to monitor anything and everything we need to monitor. Building alerts and custom actions to those alerts.
What do you dislike about the product?
As with all Solarwinds products there is a lot of options to SAM. You are able to do so much it can get overbearing. Just take the time and make it happen.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
One issue we have had is an application locking up. While we were working out the bugs we created a monitor and had the application restart when it went down.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give it a trial it is free for 30 days. A must have especially if you have home brew applications.
Pretty good templates and basic application monitoring
What do you like best about the product?
I like the templates, either canned or ones you can build, to apply across a line of servers to monitor applications. It is fairly easy to monitor processes or services for availability and performance. They recently (in 6.6) added some application dependency mapping (using an agent) to show what network connections are made by what services out to other servers/services, this is a nice addition if you are using the agent.
What do you dislike about the product?
The web interface is not always the easiest to use. If there is a problem with an application you click on the red text thinking it will tell you what the problem is, but it is often a few more clicks away.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to apply the same template across multiple deployment tiers, allowing our developers to get access to the same monitoring that we will use in production. This allows them to make sure their applications are performing and reporting properly before we have it deployed for real.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you have other solarwinds products this is a good addition. They are also adding a bit more application monitoring (using an agent) in to SAM, which is nice. NPM is still their strongest offering. Support has gotten worse over the past few years though, and SolarWinds as a whole seems to be branching out in many (too many?) directions.
