Monitoring services, directories, files, event etc. done with ease
What do you like best about the product?
I really like the Real-Time Event Log Viewer, Service Control Manager, Real-Time Processor Explorer, Exchange module, Active Directory module and all the AppInsight modules.
What do you dislike about the product?
I would like the ability to change gauges and remove columns and go to a blank canvas
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monitoring services, directories, SQL, IIS and events. We are able to identify problems proactively before an application has problems or goes down. Our downtime for applications have gone down and uptime has gone up since we've starting monitoring these elements.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's simple, you need an IP address and credentials to authenticate with then the rest is easy
Solarwinds SAM reivew
What do you like best about the product?
The flexibility it gives you to monitor different aspects of your environment such as websites, certificates, Exchange and many others.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the application templates can use better instructions on how to implement them, or possibility give some examples as to how they can be implemented.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use this product to monitor services on various application, we have eliminated the issue of SSL certs expiring on our websites when we setup SSL monitors in SAM.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Document the app templates better and provide step by step configurations to help people use them.
Great for Monitoring all your applications
What do you like best about the product?
I am able to setup custom monitors to alert me if there are issues with my applications
What do you dislike about the product?
The only think i have run into an issue with (not really a dislike) is adding applications to monitor each part of the application being monitored is using what solarwinds calls elements in doing this we have had to purchase unlimited license. It is understandable they had to setup their pricing somehow though
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am able to get alerted when an application is down and be able to resolve the issue by restarting a service if it stops right in the SAM in solarwinds
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Using this has minimized our outages because we get notified when issues happen usually it is before we get notified by our internal users that there is an issue.
SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor
What do you like best about the product?
It covers a wide variety of application monitors.
What do you dislike about the product?
SolarWinds' tech support is horrid. You are expected to use the Thwack community to solve problems, but you will regularly find your question asked 7 years ago and never answered.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Just trying to maintain a vigilant watch on specific server performance.
SAM - A must have for IT pro's
What do you like best about the product?
I really like the application health overview on the main SAM page, the APP Stack is a wonderful addition. The App insight for SQL and IIS is a game changer as well and we utilize it daily.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is not much to dislike. I wish I could afford a larger license to be able to monitor every application with SAM
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monitoring SAP applications was a huge issue for us, we were able to use SAM to give us all the information we need.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is a mandatory product. I would recommend all companies to utilize SAM for internal use.
Flexibility meets demand
What do you like best about the product?
With SAM the Orion platform really feels like a Swiss Army knife. There is so much flexibility and the options are nearly limitless. It is very rare when I come across something I cannot monitor effectively.
What do you dislike about the product?
I would like to see a way to define a service, and add subsets of servers, applications, components etc. Critical KPIs that make up the service. I know you can kind of do this with Groups today, but it's not quite the same and the Availability reporting with Groups isn't nearly as good as what we can get with SAM. So getting that same functionality with SAM would be great.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monitoring of Server and Virtual infrastructure. I'm now monitoring Office 365 products as well, leveraging the MS API and powershell capabilities of SAM. This allows us to alert on the Office 365 products, when currently there isn't a native solution for alerts (except SMS) from Microsoft.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Great Product that can fill many many gaps with all the flexibility it can offer. This product however, is not an APM so do not look for it to solve that issue.
Why the network is slow?
What do you like best about the product?
A quick NTA glance I can pin point why the network is slow and who is the culprit
What do you dislike about the product?
Slow to access the NTA, extra server for database.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Go ahead blame the network for the latency. Just a quick NTA glance I can pin point why the network is slow and who is the culprit
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you already have NPM, NTA is no brainer. NTA can be right on the desktop with NPM
Another great Solarwinds product. NCM will make your life easier.
What do you like best about the product?
Scheduling back ups and knowing that they are being done is a great load off your mind. Knowing that not only do you have a backup, but you have several versions of that back to refer to if need be, is also a great peace. NCM saves us so much time and allows us to send config to multiple devices in a matter of minutes, which not only saves times, but gets things up and running in no time.
What do you dislike about the product?
Per device NCM can be time consuming, especially if those devices do not have SNMP set up. As you have to rely on SNMP, this can sometimes get frustrating. It is also quite expensive as you grow in your IT infrastructure due to licensing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It has saved us time being the biggest problem solver. It has helped us keep regular backups without anyone having to do anything manually. It helps get switches and routers back up and running in no time, as we can restore configs in a few clicks.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's an excellent module and will save you so much time. If you're backing up, reporting, need alerts on changes or simply pushing one line of config to all your devices, NCM does it seamlessly. Worth the investment.
A View from the Top
What do you like best about the product?
SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor (SAM) allows you to get a view from the top of your systems. The ability to drill down and view what is going on at the process, port level is great. The appLinsight provides a great level of detail. You can prove why "It's the apps not hardware"" to management.
What do you dislike about the product?
Requires a bit of work to setup and get configured. Sales force is a pain in the butt.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Why SQL is causing so much problems and come to find out it's run away queries.
Game Changer
What do you like best about the product?
Previously we used a different product to monitor our environment and it was very limited in what it could do and there was no reporting features. The best thing I like the most about SAM is the single pane of glass to view everything about a server and the applications that you are monitoring. I also like that Solarwinds is always upgrading their products and the integration between their products is very handy and makes determining issues very easy.
What do you dislike about the product?
One thing that I feel is lacking in this product is the report building. I feel like it has not changed much over the progression of the product and I feel other products I have used offered easier report and graph building.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Due to the relatively low cost in comparison to the previous product we used we were able to purchase the ALX licenses so we are not able to monitor all of our servers and applications. In addition we can now correlate events across systems to determine where the bottle neck is and helps us reduce down time and system performance issues.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
In comparison to what's out there I feel for the money they offer a great product that does everything we need and more.
