Powerful Cost Transparency with Intricate Setup
What do you like best about the product?
I like the comprehensive out-of-the-box reporting features provided by IBM Apptio, which streamline analysis and reporting processes significantly. The ease of drilling into reports to access detailed insights beyond the rolled-up totals is another exceptional feature, making data analysis more flexible and insightful for understanding the finer points of our financial structure. Additionally, IBM Apptio's ability to translate financial data into a common language comprehensible to the business enhances our organisational communication and efficiency.
What do you dislike about the product?
I think one challenge with IBM Apptio is that it requires a very specific skill set to build out and maintain the model within the TBM Studio. It would be great if it was a little more user-friendly on the back end and didn't require as much from initial support users. The initial setup was also a bit complicated and took a lot of work, as it involves many intricacies in building out the cost model.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use IBM Apptio to determine the Total Cost of Ownership and translate financial data into a language the business understands, providing detailed reports that enhance cost transparency at various business levels.

These features collectively provide considerable value realization for IT spend, enhancing my ability to plan, forecast, and manage tasks effectively. The combination of streamlined planning and insightful reporting makes IBM Apptio an indispensable tool in my professional activities.
What do you dislike about the product?
I find the forecasting capabilities limited by only allowing forecasting on the summary tab. Additionally, there's a need for better integration of actuals versus budget in variance analysis down to the contract level.

I use IBM Apptio for planning, forecasting, and creating dashboards, enabling me to track application rationalization and realize value from IT spend.

I appreciate that IBM Apptio is quick and inclusive of all types of data, which significantly enhances its utility for my needs. Its ability to handle diverse data types is especially valuable, allowing comprehensive analysis and insights. The TBM Studio is a standout feature, as it can ingest virtually any data, making it incredibly flexible and adaptive to different business scenarios. The seamless integration of this capability into my workflow ensures that I can model costs and perform IT Planning effectively, supporting essential business functions like understanding Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and budgetary allocations.
What do you dislike about the product?
IBM Apptio is pretty technical, which can be challenging, particularly for tasks that I don't do often. I feel that the documentation could be improved to provide better guidance in these instances.

I feel that IBM Apptio could benefit from having a Command Line Interface (CLI) for expedience. This feature would streamline certain processes and enhance efficiency for users who prefer or require a more direct and potentially faster way to interact with the software.

I find it challenging to track year-to-year changes in IT Planning when there are changes in vendors or descriptions.

The software simplifies the readability of budget data, making it easier to understand for those who may not be as budget-oriented. I particularly value the different views, especially the 'In Development' and 'Production' views, which are incredibly helpful during our beginning-of-the-month validations. Setting up IBM Apptio was straightforward, as it was easy to gain access and learn the basics, which is a significant plus for any software. As a testament to my satisfaction, I would rate the likelihood of recommending IBM Apptio at a solid 9 out of 10, emphasizing my confidence in its utility and effectiveness.

The behind-the-scenes operations, such as adjusting filters and creating tables in IBM Apptio, are challenging for me. Despite using the platform for budget management effectively, I find these technical aspects difficult to grasp. As a result, we have to consult external help to manage these tasks efficiently, which indicates a steep learning curve or lack of intuitive design in handling advanced features.
