Being a long time user of WSO2 API Manager

  • July 29, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I've been using WSO2 API Manager for a while now, and I can confidently say it's one of the best open-source API management solutions out there — especially if you're looking for something enterprise-grade yet customizable.

One of the biggest positives for me is the flexibility and extensibility it offers. Whether you're building APIs from scratch, managing existing services, or applying complex authentication and throttling policies, WSO2 lets you tweak things exactly the way you want. It integrates well with other systems (including identity providers, analytics platforms, and CI/CD tools), and the way it separates components like Publisher, Developer Portal, and Gateway gives you a lot of control over your architecture.
What do you dislike about the product?
One of the biggest challenges is the initial complexity like in setting it up.
Although the documentation is extensive, it’s not always clear.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
WSO2 API Manager has streamlined our API strategy, reduced duplication, improved security, and made it easier to scale. It gives me confidence that APIs are well-managed, well-documented, and protected

Highly Recommended for Flexible and Secure API Management

  • July 29, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Open-Source and Cost-Effective:
It's one of the few full-featured, open-source API management solutions, which makes it budget-friendly compared to commercial alternatives.
Customizability and Extensibility:
WSO2 allows deep customization — you can tailor the API gateway, throttling policies, workflows, and even the user portals.
Built-In API Lifecycle Management:
It covers the full API lifecycle — from creation, testing, publishing, and deprecation — with good governance tools.
Rich Set of Features:
Includes advanced features like multi-tenancy, analytics, throttling, monetization, and integrated Identity Server for OAuth2, JWT, etc.
Good Integration Capabilities:
Easily integrates with other WSO2 products and external systems through connectors, REST APIs, and custom extensions.
Developer Portal:
The self-service API Developer Portal is well-designed and allows consumers to browse, test, and subscribe to APIs easily.
What do you dislike about the product?
Community Support is Limited:
Being open-source is a plus, but the community is not as large or responsive as those of better-known tools like Kong or Apigee. Enterprise support is available, but at a cost.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Faster API development and deployment, reducing time-to-market.
Stronger security posture with built-in identity and access management.
Improved collaboration between API publishers and consumers via self-service portals.
Operational cost savings through automation and scalable architecture.

Robust and Flexible API Management Platform

  • July 29, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
WSO2 API Manager offers a comprehensive solution for full lifecycle API management, with strong support for API publishing, security, analytics, and throttling. I also appreciate the flexibility to customize and extend features to fit enterprise needs. The documentation and active community support are also a big plus.
What do you dislike about the product?
The initial setup and configuration can be a bit complex, especially for new users. The learning curve is somewhat steep due to the rich feature set. Additionally, managing the deployment and updates in a clustered environment can be tricky without proper DevOps practices.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
WSO2 API Manager helps us manage and govern our APIs efficiently across teams and environments. It centralizes API publishing, security, throttling, and monitoring — solving challenges related to scalability, access control, and API analytics. This has improved our API lifecycle management, accelerated development timelines, and strengthened overall security and compliance.

Review after 9 years usage.

  • July 17, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have been using WSO2's API Manager product for over 9 years now, and I have followed its evolution since version 2.0.0. I have used version 2.0.0, then 3.2.0, 4.1.0, and currently version 4.5.0.

The product is a real asset and accelerator for managing our API catalog. We rely on its capabilities to provide both external public and internal private service catalogs. Beyond its numerous technical capabilities, the product supports us in managing and governing our API assets in the broadest sense.

Installation and getting started in standard mode is very easy and facilitated by extensive documentation available on the product website.

The implementation could be more tricky if you have special uses cases.

I recommend this product with a rating of 9/10, given that it is an open-source product, there is always room for improvement and evolution. WSO2 is a powerful and renowned publisher, and their teams are always available and do not hesitate to propose product updates if a client need makes sense to them.

I also recommend this product for its reliability in critical production environments, with an availability rate of approximately 99.97% to date.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't necessarily have any drawbacks to address regarding the product.
The only drawback I can find is the weakness of the documentation around version migrations.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
WSO2 API Manager helps us to add more governance into our API Platform.
Also, product helps us to provide external and internal service catalogs.

What do you like best about the product?
It's a solid open-source API gateway with strong security features, good integration with WSO2 Identity Server, and useful tools for managing traffic and access. The developer portal is clean and easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
Setup and upgrades can be tricky. Docs are sometimes outdated or unclear. Better examples and smoother upgrades would help.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It helps us securely expose internal services as APIs, manage traffic, and control access through OAuth2. It simplifies API publishing and versioning, saving us time and improving security across teams.

Effortless integration with REST APIs enhances business process management

  • April 14, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use WSO2 API Manager to integrate our telecom products with third-party REST APIs. We are orchestrating services where our business process defines the integration of multiple REST APIs. For example, we invoke REST API one and, based on certain conditions, invoke REST API two. This entire process is built within our process flows.

What is most valuable?

The product's capabilities for integrating with REST APIs are valuable. We use API key-based security integration, where API keys are exchanged between the REST APIs. This ensures security. In the future, we might also use OAuth-based integration. Internally, the business process manager allows us to define the process and integrate with it. Additionally, the capability to define processes and seamless integration with APIs enhances our operations.

What needs improvement?

We have encountered some concerns with concurrency. Our integrations do not handle high-volume transactions, and when benchmarking, some issues arose with concurrent testing. It is uncertain whether this is due to our system configuration or not. Once we explore high-volume concurrency, I may have more insights into potential improvements.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using WSO2 API Manager for less than one year.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Initially, we faced some hiccups during the prototyping phase. However, once we thoroughly understood the documentation, we became comfortable with the installation process.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The system is stable for our low-concurrency use cases. We have not tested it with a 24/7, blue-green deployment model, so from our current operations, the stability is satisfactory.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is not an issue. We find it easy to deploy multiple systems.

How are customer service and support?

The support is good, with well-defined documentation and helpful blogs. Documentation has improved over the years, and support was adequate for the limited use case we are applying.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Initially, the setup had some challenges, but once we understood the documentation well, the installation became manageable.

What about the implementation team?

The prototyping was done by one person and then delegated to a deployment group.

What other advice do I have?

While I am not personally involved in the pricing aspects, I am aware of WSO2's competitive nature. I rate WSO2 API Manager an eight out of ten. Some AI integration opportunities in the future could be promising.
