Smartling with Contentful Connector
What do you like best about the product?
The Customer Sucess Teams at Smartling are fantastic. They are always willing to help and provide guidance on how to use the SMartling platform. Kudos to Kyle Robb who has been patient, Connor Katz to getting me up to speed 8 months ago and Frank Salituro who makes adding additional projects a breeze.
As for the platform, once you have all the pieces in place and can start leveraging translation memory, it's a very helpful tool for localization.

What do you dislike about the product?
Smartling as a platform is difficult to get started with because the interface is confusing. It would be helpful if there were more tooltips to help you along. I can't speak to other integrations but we use Contentful and it adds another layer of complexing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Attempting to get versions of our site in as many languages to serve multiple locales. Once you have translation memory established I believe it can make the translation process more streamlined but we are simply not there yet.
Expensive, missing features
What do you like best about the product?
Reasonably intuitive UI, good knowledge base.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's the most expensive platform on the market yet under delivers on performance. Many industry standard features are missing and very limited configurations available. It may be ok if you can use it as is out-of-the-box, but venture away from their standard use cases and you're in trouble.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Software and website translation, automation. No benefits above the standard benefits of any TMS platform.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you're starting out in localization and have a huge budget, as a first TMS, you'll probably be fine with Smartling. If you're after a robust platform for a mature localization program, I would look elsewhere.
Robust Localization CMS & CAT tool
What do you like best about the product?
Smartling platform allows a lot of flexibility with various existing and customizable connectors via API. In-context translation allows better translation quality and support for the linguists. Smartling team is always willing to go above and beyond to customize their setup and project tracking through extensive platform features. Love the variety of data and reports, easy to pull and understand.
What do you dislike about the product?
Would love to see more design connectors and issue color coding to separate them by the type.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our company is using Smartling for UI localization through the custom integration with our internal CMS. Also, we translate a lot of marketing, editorial, and customer support content via Smartling. The benefit of in-context translation is huge and allows us to improve the timing on the internal LQA process. Also, having all linguistic assets in one places help our cross-functional teams to stay aligned on the terminology and voice of the company across different markets.
Localizing Across iOS & Android Concurrently
What do you like best about the product?
Smartling makes it easy to host a database of strings, have them be translated by third parties, and integrate them into your project.
What do you dislike about the product?
Strings cannot be shared cross platform without custom integration. For iOS & Android, the format for localized strings differ, which requires separate files. It would nice to be able to combine strings between both platforms.
Following up on translation issues filed by translators is a very confusing workflow that typically gets screwed up when attempting to coordinate other engineers to respond to issues. When addressing an issue, commenting on the issue will not cause the issue to go back into the translators queue, thus them not seeing the comment. It requires the engineer to reject the translation, a process that cannot be done from the issue view. You must navigate to the string in the string viewer to reject the translation.
Words being related to jobs is not clear. For the project I work in, we have over 30,000 words that are not in jobs. It's not very clear how words relate to a job and the jobs purpose. This is difficult to explain to new people when onboarding.
Another issue we've had is strings being stuck In Progress for months if not years. Over time, if an engineer does not respond to a string, for example by leaving the company or forgetting, strings can be stuck In Progress and never moved to the published state. It would be nice to have a way to know when strings become stale in a state.

Smartling allows us to easily store all of our strings in a central database. Without Smartling we would need to use a spreadsheet.
A significant benefit of using Smartling is having historical data of string changes. Something not easily doable in a spreadsheet.

Recommendations to others considering the product:
Evaluate what your situation is, how your projects are setup and teams organized. Smartling is very powerful when you have a resource that is responsible for monitoring strings in Smartling, but fails to offer solutions to help integrate with engineer workflows.
Flexibility and great localization memory data base
What do you like best about the product?
I like the flexibility of the platform and all the jobs are connected and organized very well. Moreover, localization memory is very convenient and effective. Last but not least, the customer support team is superb to solve any questions I encounter on the platform.
What do you dislike about the product?
The routes of communication with linguists might be tricky. i.e. users need to reject the translation after it's published. However, not every user is aware of that, so users tend to leave comments/open an issue, which won't assign linguists automatically and the tickets will be pending for a while. Also because the communication route with linguists is not so clear, sometimes we can't assure the localization quality.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our company is expanding to global markets without the local team. It can be very chaotic when only a small amount of teammates manage the whole global markets, Smartling's memory database really makes things easier and effective.
An efficient and versatile localisation platform
What do you like best about the product?
The user interface and the TM management have improved since I started using it.
What do you dislike about the product?
The Quality Check system which could be more efficient and user-friendly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As we are expanding to new countries and new locales, Smartling is allowing us to manage localisation projects easily and tailor workflows to our needs. The Translation Memories management has proved efficient and the integration of various connectors allow us to save time and effort on a daily basis. Having only one to-go platform to manage and allocate jobs, translate and answer linguists queries is a big plus.
Wonderful customer support
What do you like best about the product?
Smartling is an outstanding translation service, but it's the people behind the platform that I appreciate the most. Our contacts at Smartling have always been easy to work with and very supportive of our needs and requests.
What do you dislike about the product?
Because Smartling is such a robust product, I find the interface can be challenging at times. Our software engineers have expressed frustration with trying to resolve issues or create jobs.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are satisfying our global customers' needs to utilize our software in their native language.
Very useful but very complicated
What do you like best about the product?
It's awesome to have a translation software that can be used for multiple languages and projects. It makes our life easier and the process a lot smoother. I like how easy it is to create a job, add the document, select the language, and assign a due date.
What do you dislike about the product?
Besides the easy option to create jobs, I fell that the app is not very intuitive. Often times I have to talk with my colleague that implemented it to make sure that the request was processed properly and I'll get the correct translations.
Also, our integration with Marketo failed.
Also, our integration with Marketo failed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It helps translate our website. We use it for all our content pieces and emails.
Dedicated team and partner for localization
What do you like best about the product?
The Smartling team is incredibly responsive and helpful. We partnered with Smartling as our localization platform for go-to-market in 8 European languages and have since enlisted their Language Services add-on to help meet SLAs of our CI/CD processes. The linguists that we've worked with are passionate and resourceful professionals who understand and put a lot of thought into product localization. The continuous feedback loop is extremely helpful and responses to questions are always answered in a timely manner.
What do you dislike about the product?
The user experience in the tool isn't perfect, but the Smartling team is very responsive to feedback and manages to solve for bugs quickly. A few areas of improvement to call out:
- SmartMatch function could be more robust. For example, it would be great to have a SmartMatch behavior setting that caught changes to string instructions (ie. key and variant fields) so that content that Project Managers want to flag doesn't accidentally get pushed live without approval for a particular context.
- Self service reporting features for the user are rather limited. At the moment, it's not possible for users to download a report with job completion data (ie. date and timestamp) by language (only by the timestamp of the last language to complete a job). This makes it difficult for managers to identify how specific locales and linguists are performing.
- We initially ran into some issues with the Zendesk API integration, but the Smartling team helped point us in the right direction to resolve issues quickly.
- Context capture features required more dev work on the customer side than expected, so we have not been able to get this aspect of the product up and running yet.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Product localization to launch in international markets and to meet CI/CD process SLAs.
This has truly increased our business to international guest!
What do you like best about the product?
I love how attentive the team is! Whenever I reach out to the team with a question or a challenging task, they are there ready with some answers. We've had various issues that have popped up with the backend of our website and the proxy sites. The team had no hesitation in hopping on calls with our website vendor in order to resolve the issues. They also provided recaps to me and the team about how this issue was resoled.
What do you dislike about the product?
The structure of the site doesn't make the most sense to me. It's a little confusing to navigate. When I first started in my position a year and a half ago I felt the on-boarding process wasn't as thorough as it could've been. I feel that having visuals such as comprehensive videos would have been super helpful in order to always be able to revert back to them as a reference. I still get confused where I can give guidelines on certain tasks. I wish there was more interactive reporting from our website. What I mean by this is some analytics behind our proxy sites. However, I will say that my rep at Smartling is ALWAYS willing to help me out and point me in the right direction.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to take guests from organic and paid search, through their purchase process, and receive an eTicket in their native language. We currently able to do this in nine different languages! This wouldn't be possible without Smartling. They have truly enhanced our business as one of the top New York City attractions to allow us to be more accommodating to all of our customers from around the world.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would definitely look into a vendor like Smartling. They have been wonderful to work with. We use them for our proxy sites on our webpage. We currently offer our website in eleven languages. We are hoping to add Arabic in the next year or so. We can now complete a ticket purchase in nine of the eleven languages we offer. As well as our website, we use Smartling fairly frequently for various documents -- from signage around our attraction to public documents given to school groups to internal documents given to employees. We want to ensure our communication is accessible to all of our guests and employees.
