Provides a comprehensive view by integrating with other monitoring systems
What is our primary use case?
There are three major things that I look for. The first is that it is undoubtedly tier one, as per Gartner. This lowers the risk of product performance. Dynatrace has a good presence from an APM perspective, application performance perspective, where it can be easily configured.
There are many adapters and solutions available in the market. In every organization, like ours, there are a few more built-in adapters.
From an enterprise perspective, due to the higher cost, higher stability, and several considerations for high-level architecture, I take care of security perspectives, providing a stable solution.
For system integrators, it is good from an operational perspective since there are many SLAs, so larger organizations generally opt for tier one solutions where they can have fewer operational issues, avoiding SLA penalties.
What is most valuable?
Graduation features offered by Dynatrace provide a single view and can connect with many other monitoring systems. Importantly, it delivers real-time insights.
Additionally, Dynatrace positively impacts my organization in various ways.
What needs improvement?
There may be an issue since there are many tools like Splunk involved in network monitoring. From an IP perspective, Dynatrace is performing well. If they want to develop in network monitoring, they can, as it's part of their product line. It's not rocketry, so they can accomplish it. If I, as an SI, look at it from an enterprise perspective, considering the cost from the client, I prefer not to go with multiple systems, as they don't provide a complete 360-degree view. They need to improve on claims about being an enterprise system. The definition of enterprise is loosely used, however, from a holistic security perspective, including infrastructure, network, ports, software, applications, transactions, and databases, there are areas lacking, especially in network monitoring tools.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used the solution for the last four years, just for four years only.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Stability depends on the deployment, the person deploying it, and how the configuration is done. Generally, all are stable at ninety-nine point nine nine percent, but if the underlying infrastructure is not deployed correctly, stability may be problematic. This is a very relative term, and no software can exist alone at ninety-nine point nine percent. If the infrastructure doesn't support it, it cannot exist as standalone. Deployment location, whether in triple nine data centers, double nine data centers, or other types, also matters. If power is lost, stability is affected, depending on how it's deployed.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability is easy. All opportunities work on the agent number and server transactions that need monitoring. If you include those things, some are agent-based, and some are agentless. The monitoring is done based on licenses, like tier or enterprise licenses. It depends on what the client is looking for. If it's an enterprise, increasing the number of instances doesn’t pose problems.
How are customer service and support?
Their support system is good. I would rate them at 9.5 out of ten. People generally don't pursue it since it's a monitoring system itself. They have a good reputation, and the support is commendable. People are helpful, even with delivery and other related aspects. I use their excellent support system.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
Anand, this is reflective work. These setups are complex, meaning significant thought is required. It's a relative aspect, however, developers could have clearer insights. Today, products in the market are packaged, just requiring configuration. Collecting logs, tagging events, and other aspects are relatively straightforward and not considered complex.
What was our ROI?
Determining ROI is subjective. Monitoring is passive, merely aiding business processes and not active within them. ROI is hard to specify; however, incidents like impending ransomware attacks highlight its value, though those are exceptional events. Return on investment in predictive analytics and AI tools is minimal, given the passive nature of these systems.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Clients sometimes opt for alternatives based on budget constraints. If the budget is small, tier two solutions like Elasticsearch may be considered. It varies by location, like in Singapore, where tier two solutions are viable options.
What other advice do I have?
I give the solution nine out of ten. Enterprises typically choose Dynatrace, especially when the IT system budget is around a $100 to $200 million. Investing an additional $120 million makes sense. If your system is worth $50 million, the investment doesn’t exceed 1.2%. ROI considerations are tied to observability, dependent on how the business values these aspects.
Used for end-to-end monitoring of cloud and on-premises infrastructure and applications
What is our primary use case?
We use Dynatrace as an end-to-end monitoring solution to monitor all our cloud and on-premises infrastructure and applications. We use Dynatrace to monitor everything except storage, backup, and network devices. Our e-commerce front-end applications are completely monitored on Dynatrace.
What is most valuable?
I like the solution's tracing feature. There's a technology called PurePath in Dynatrace that helps us trace the end-to-end request for a service call. It starts tracing or capturing from the moment a user accesses our website, opens the browser, and clicks on login till it reaches our endpoint, the application server with the database server.
It will capture all the traces, including the number of requests, the response time, the number of calls made, the number of errors, and the root cause of each error. Dynatrace provides real user monitoring with APM.
What needs improvement?
Dynatrace is not great for network monitoring. Network monitoring can be done with a bit of customization. Although it provides end-to-end tracing from server to application, you don't get end-to-end tracing for network devices because it uses the SNMP protocol to discover them.
It will not get coordinated with the Dynatrace agent. That protocol is entirely different. It would be good if Dynatrace could come up with some feature that can help us pull the network tracing along with the application tracing. Dynatrace could improve the visualization part in log analytics because it is not as great as Splunk.
Dynatrace does very good monitoring for Azure cloud monitoring, but for GCP, it is not as great as Azure. The solution should improve from Google Cloud monitoring.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Dynatrace for six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the solution’s stability a nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I rate the solution’s scalability an eight out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
The solution's technical support is very good and very much available.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The solution's initial setup is very simple. You never get any monitoring tool as simple as Dynatrace. You just have to deploy one agent, and it's very straightforward.
What was our ROI?
Dynatrace is easy to install and manage. It is simple and saves a lot of time. It is quite easy to manage, and anyone with basic IT knowledge can be a Dynatrace administrator.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Dynatrace is an expensive solution.
On a scale from one to ten, where one is expensive and ten is cheap, I rate the solution's pricing a five out of ten.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Datadog is Dynatrace's main competitor. It is cheaper than Dynatrace. However, Datadog's instrumentation is manual and time-consuming, and it requires a lot of effort. In contrast, Dynatrace can be set up in half an hour. Setting up Datadog requires a lot of manual effort and is not as easy as Dynatrace. Presentation-wise, Datadog's look and feel are not as impressive as Dynatrace's.
What other advice do I have?
Technology keeps evolving. In my experience, we recently migrated our application from Azure VM to microservices hosted in Kubernetes. Some requirements were there, especially with GCP. Using the solution does not depend on the company size but on the requirement. Whoever uses an e-commerce ordering website must have Dynatrace. I would recommend Dynatrace to other users.
Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.
Enhanced transparency and comprehensive insights with customizable observability
What is our primary use case?
We have been working with Dynatrace primarily for observability. We utilize the solution across various industries, including retail, financial services, insurance, and manufacturing. Our focus is to provide comprehensive monitoring and observability as part of our managed service provider (MSP) offerings. We offer extensive customization and value addition to the data provided by Dynatrace.
How has it helped my organization?
The solution enables us to deliver tailored services to our customers, including generating customized measurements, KPIs, and dashboards. This enhances our ability to provide detailed and valuable insights to our clients.
What is most valuable?
The observability provided by Dynatrace is extremely valuable. It allows us to achieve transparency and gain comprehensive insights into our operations.
What needs improvement?
The pricing model of Dynatrace is somewhat confusing. Currently, the industry is adapting to a consumption-based pricing model instead of a traditional licensing model, which might take some time to get used to.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have three years of experience working with Dynatrace.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of Dynatrace is extremely easy.
How are customer service and support?
I cannot provide specific details about their technical support as I am not in charge of that aspect.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
What was our ROI?
Our company adds substantial value to the solution, making the pricing fair and providing significant value-added services to our clients.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The shift to a consumption-based pricing model from a licensing model is something new. Customers need to adapt to paying per consumption.
What other advice do I have?
The value of Dynatrace is in its observability feature, but understanding the pricing model can be intricate. Ensure you have a good grasp of how the consumption-based model works.
I'd rate the solution nine out of ten.
Fully automated solution, so it's easy to use when it comes to deployment but the solution could extend the visibility to cover more infrastructure monitoring capabilities
What is our primary use case?
Dynatrace is doing it very well. It offers the customer a holistic view of the application or website, starting from the front-end services to the back-end services. Mainly, they are focusing more on application performance.
For sure, they have it for server monitoring and network performance monitoring, but mainly they are focusing on application and AI capabilities when it comes to application performance monitoring.
They are very good when it comes to APM.
What is most valuable?
It has AI capabilities for anomaly detection. Also, they are a fully automated solution, so it's easy to use when it comes to deployment. In general, they have root cause analysis, monitoring the components, and monitoring the application. They use information to connect the issues, detecting problems, and finding LiveOps analysis.
What needs improvement?
It would be good to extend the visibility to cover more infrastructure monitoring capabilities and more network performance capabilities.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using it for five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is a stable product.
Moreover, there is a support team. Honestly, they are doing very good when it comes to communications and documentation, so you can easily troubleshoot and diagnose issues.
You can also easily reach out to their support team. For the components themselves, it's quite stable. There aren't many parts when it comes to Dynatrace components or the platform itself. So, it's the best solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I would rate the scalability an eight out of ten because it is an agentless solution. It is scalable; you can deploy the agent wherever you want.
We have Enterprise businesses as our clients. It can be offered to small businesses, but it would be pretty expensive. Technically, there is no problem with that. But, it's all about the cost or the price.
How are customer service and support?
We can reach out to them directly through chat services within the platform itself, or we can contact their partners globally. Dynatrace would be able to help you directly, and also let you contact the enterprise support team. So, it's quite good when it comes to support.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
I would rate my experience with the initial setup an eight out of ten, with ten being easy.
It is fully automated, so it was easy.
The deployment model can be both on-premises and on the cloud.
The deployment depends on the component. Overall, it can be done in less than one hour, or two hours maximum; you will be able to finish deployment when it comes to the main components, like the analysis server or admin server. But when it comes to agents, it depends on the customer's environment. It may take hours or weeks. So, it depends on the prerequisites and the customers themselves.
What was our ROI?
The cost savings can add because they are focusing on the end-user experience. Currently, all businesses are all about the user experience. So once you have such a tool, you just want to make sure that users are satisfied.
When they are satisfied, you will gain benefits. So when it comes to return on investment, by keeping your customers satisfied, it's worth it to invest in such a tool. It gives you clear visibility of the user experience or user behavior so you can improve your business.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It's not cheap, for sure. Dynatrace targets enterprise customers, banking, government entities. So for sure, it's not cheap, and it's a little bit expensive. So, I would rate the pricing a seven out of ten, with ten being expensive.
Now, here comes the comparison to other APM competitors like AppDynamics and IBM; yhey are within the same range. They are all targeting top-end users.
What other advice do I have?
Dynatrace has an AI engine. It collects numerous metrics from the customer's IT environment. The AI engine then correlates and analyzes all of these collected metrics and transactions to offer some capabilities to the customers.
However, my recommendation depends on the use cases or pain points for the customers. For application visibility or end-user experience, I would recommend Dynatrace.
Overall, I would rate the solution a seven out of ten.
Used for application performance monitoring
What is our primary use case?
The solution is predominantly used for application performance monitoring.
What is most valuable?
The solution's most valuable features are AI and root cause analysis. These two features maintain a chain of dependencies so that everyone knows about the things that depend on each other across all the parts of this application.
What needs improvement?
The solution's user interface could be improved. Because of the browser metaphor, you must click multiple times, which is not as slick as a purpose-designed user interface.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Dynatrace for a few years.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.
Comes with good integration capabilities and useful in application monitoring
What is our primary use case?
We use the product in application monitoring.
What is most valuable?
The solution offers a better overview of applications. It offers end-to-end monitoring, and the user experience is real.
What needs improvement?
Dynatrace needs to improve its configuration.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with the product for two years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I rate the tool's scalability a ten out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
The tool's support is hard to reach.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
How was the initial setup?
I rate the product's deployment a ten out of ten. The installation and deployment process is brief, but configuring the entire environment, including the agent server and enterprise configuration, is more complex and time-consuming.
What other advice do I have?
Our clients are enterprise businesses. Dynatrace's integration capabilities are good. I rate it a ten out of ten.
A SaaS-based product with great technical support and easy setup phase
What is our primary use case?
With Dynatrace, my company pretty much utilizes it to try and catch performance issues before certain issues get created on our online banking platforms, as well as for technical performance issues in our internal systems and to make sure that our users get the best experience. The aforementioned details consist of three use cases. Obviously, my company stopped using some of Dynatrace's features since we started getting a few issues as certain services have gone down or been degraded. With Dynatrace, my company receives pop-ups on our site in terms of an alert to which we can react if needed, and it helps us minimize any negative impact on our clients or business stakeholders.
What is most valuable?
With Dynatrace, I think I like its ability to dive deep down into each service and application at the code level. You can see Dynatrace interacting with other applications, so it gives you a good understanding of where things go wrong. I think it is just that Dynatrace gives you great observability on your platform.
What needs improvement?
With Dynatrace, there is nothing that I would like to see improved in the product right now. Dynatrace pretty much fits in and meets all the checkboxes or requirements of my company. I know that a new product from Dynatrace will be launched soon, and my company may plan to move to it, so I think all the requests from my company's end related to Dynatrace may actually get covered in the new product.
From an enhancement perspective, I would like Dynatrace to focus on areas related to cognitive AI since it can help its users better understand their problems. With AI-related enhancements in Dynatrace, I can talk to the tool in English. Instead of getting some codes from the tool, Dynatrace can tell me the problem in a normal and understandable English language. If I am not mistaken, the aforementioned AI-related area may actually be released in the new version of Dynatrace.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Dynatrace since 2013, making it almost ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is a 100 percent stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Dynatrace is a highly scalable product since it is a SaaS-based application. As it is a SaaS-based application, you can deploy ActiveGate wherever you need it or closest to your environment.
Though I cannot check the list of the users who use the solution and don't have access to see the number of old users, many people use the solution. It would be close to around 300 users presently who use Dynatrace.
How are customer service and support?
The solution's technical support is extremely good. If in our company, we are stuck with something, Dynatrace's technical support team is always quick to respond, and they always have answers to our questions.
I rate the technical support a nine out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have experience with SolarWinds and Applications Manager from ManageEngine. I predominantly use Dynatrace.
The pros of Dynatrace are that you are able to drill down to see in-depth how your application is performing, how your host is performing, and how your business services are performing, right from the cloud level down to the codes. The con of Dynatrace is that, at times, because it has so much information, it becomes difficult to see the root cause of your problem, and then you have to dig around to find the root cause.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of the product is a relatively easy process since it is a SaaS-based platform. Previously, with Dynatrace, my company had it deployed on an on-premises model. Currently, when my company deals with the setup processes of the product, it is really easy since you just install the agents on your server or on your hosts, after which the product starts to do what it needs to do, and then you can just create your dashboards and alert systems. If you understand the application, the setup phase is a really simple process.
The solution's deployment and maintenance processes are handled by a team consisting of four members for both South Africa and the UK, and they also readily function as a support team. In terms of deployment and product administration, you can know how to utilize the tool from a much broader base.
What other advice do I have?
Owing to the fact that Dynatrace is a SaaS-based product, there isn't much maintenance required. My company only subscribes to the services provided by the solution, and Dynatrace looks after the maintenance part, a major reason why only a small team is required to administer it.
I recommend Dynatrace to those who plan to use it since it is a Rolls Royce of monitoring tools with which you can't go wrong. Dynatrace gives you exactly what you want. There are no comparisons to Dynatrace with any other tool out there in the market.
Dynatrace is a brilliant product.
I rate the overall product a nine out of ten.
The product helps identify issues and get to the root cause, but some features must be made more robust
What is our primary use case?
We use the tool for performance analysis, root cause analysis, issue identification, and understanding the impact of technical glitches on business. We use performance dashboards and business dashboards.
How has it helped my organization?
The product helps us identify issues in the application and get to the root cause immediately. We can understand why a client experiences slowness, whether it is due to DB or some issue at the front end. It could also be an issue relating to their zone. We can also use the tool to understand the impact of the technical issue and the loss to business.
What is most valuable?
PurePath is one of the best features. We can add tags to the dashboard that we create. Synthetic user creation is also a good feature.
What needs improvement?
PurePath must be more robust. Dynatrace detects problems at a higher level. When we select a time zone and identify the problems, we should get a detailed analysis of the impact directly. We shouldn’t have to drill down to get that information since the solution already has the details of the exceptions. We have to create tags for some log-ins. It should be handled automatically to reduce tagging.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for four to five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the product’s stability an eight out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I rate the tool’s scalability an eight out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
While designing the business dashboard, I encountered various bugs that impacted my work. There were many tickets and conversations between me and the support team. It took a reasonable amount of time to solve the issues.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have used Nagios and PRTG. I started using Dynatrace because my company decided to switch to it.
How was the initial setup?
I rate the ease of setup a seven out of ten.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is not cheap.
What other advice do I have?
It’s definitely a good tool. It is a perfect combination of technical and business. It enables us to identify and make dashboards related to hardware, application, and business. Overall, I rate the tool a seven out of ten.
