I recently had the opportunity to use the Phrase Localization Platform as a voluntary translator for Translators Without Borders (TWB), and I couldn’t be more impressed. This software offers a user-friendly interface that makes it easy to navigate through projects, which is crucial when working on time-sensitive translations for humanitarian causes.
One of the standout features is its robust translation memory, which not only speeds up the process but also ensures consistency across different documents. The ability to create and manage glossaries has been invaluable, especially when dealing with specific terminology related to various fields.
Overall, Phrase Localization Platform has significantly enhanced my productivity and accuracy as a translator. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their translation workflow, whether for professional use or volunteer projects like those at TWB, and I am truly considering obtaining it for my freelance work as an English-Spanish translator.

I learned about Phrase Localization Platform when I started collaborating Translation Without Borders as a volunteer translator, and I was impressed with the features.

What do you like best about the product?

The handling of terms and translation memories is smooth in the translation interface. Doing concordance searches also works great.

From a translator's point of view the project view is a bit cluttered.

As a translator the choice of platform is not mine for each job, but Phrase is one of the better systems I am currently using for computer-assisted translation. The use of terms and translation memories works smoothly, and the machine translation can also be helpful, but obviously requires editing.

What do you like best about the product?

It is straightforward, fast, all in one place, very user-friendly, and especially it means my colleague and I can both work on translations at the same time from the same resources, which are updated in real time.

What do you dislike about the product?

Some matches from the memory don't always come up, and it took a little while to figure out settings and some features, but customer service is extremely efficient and solved all those problems very quickly.

- API documentation is lacking
- Phrase CLI has limitations
- The Figma plugin is slow and often crashes.
- Overall, the product feels unpolished, with many non-critical bugs (e.g., search filters not working)
- No ability to set rules on key names (no ability to enforce no trailing whitespace, only use underscore, etc.).
- No ability to prevent curly quotes from being used.
- No ability to auto-convert key names based on file export time (JSON vs ARB).
- After performing an action on the GUI, you need to refresh before performing another action. Otherwise, conflicts may result.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

We are using Phrase Strings to manage all UX copy for our products.
This allows developers to never hard code text, allowing designers and writers to freely change and optimize the UX copy.
Also, this allows for scable multi-lanague support.

What do you like best about the product?

The fact that I can compare my terminologies with those of my colleagues just to make sure that I'm doing the right thing is superb as a translator.

What do you dislike about the product?

Nothing because you can access it noth online and offline... Do your work and save it later

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

It's accessible offline as an app tool for translation. This solves the internet issue because you can use it without internet and save your work later.

The platform user experience is slightly above average. Catchy and intuitive enough. Contacting the Phrase support is easy and they reply very fast.

What do you dislike about the product?

Some obvious features are missing from the translation editor. The TM search is not precise at all and very slow to show up results. The file parser is not very precise and we often encounter issues with multilingual excel files. Often there are bugs or downtime periods. Although the platform offers, at least in their ads, several software integrations. Unfortunately when you start to use them, you realize there are several blockers and limitations that do not encourage us to use it further. Examples: Braze and Gdrive.
Several software integrations are missing, specifically Canva and Strapi.

Streamilining the localization process. Ability to keep everyting on one TMS.

My team uses it almost every day to translate our content like customer guides, emails and UX copy.
Phrase supports translation memory, machine translation integration, and a wide range of file formats.
It is easy to navigate and user-friendly.
When I had to contact customer support, they were always very friendly and helpful.

While basic functions are easy to use, mastering more complex tools may take time.
Sometimes slow loading times and bugs.

By using translation memory and terminology management, it ensures consistent translations across different projects and languages.

The platform is simple and easy to use. You don't need to study countless instruction sheets.

Phase offers an intuitive interface: it is easy to load the TM and TB, work and then download the translation.

What do you like best about the product?

I really appreciate how easy it was to find my way around the different features, such as creating my own translation memory. I was looking for a CAT tool that operates on a Macbook (online) without frequent bugs, which is a problem with many translation platforms. It's an all-around great tool for an affordable price.

I wish I could pay a higher amount and have access to the platform once and for all.

I needed a CAT tool that was compatible with my work equipment and I found it in the Phrase Localization Platform.

What do you like best about the product?

Phrase is a powerful tool for setting up multiple projects and managing translations efficiently. For a small company, it saves us a considerable amount of time. Once the initial setup is complete—which required some back and forth with support—Phrase fits our use cases perfectly. There are still a few aspects that could be better explained (e.g., the difference between "Jobs" for internal use and "Orders" for external translators) or improved in terms of clarity. However, overall, the platform meets our needs quite well.

What do you dislike about the product?

To provide some context, we synchronize our translation files from GitHub repositories with multiple Phrase projects (one or more per repository). These files are all in JSON format, and we use react-intl.
Given that my focus is solely on using react-intl with JSON files synced with GitHub, there’s no way to filter the documentation to show only the relevant information. Since Phrase offers various features, navigating the documentation can be overwhelming, especially when unrelated content 'pollutes' our search/reading of the documentations.This is probably worst for us if we consider we use it more on a feature basis, which implies we have a 'blitz' of the initial configuration but then we use Phrase only few times each few weeks.

Additionally, the documentation doesn’t provide a clear mental model of how things are managed on Phrase's side, leading to misconfigurations and frustrations. For instance, it wasn’t immediately clear that Phrase maintains a single file with the translation keys, which would have helped us understand the need for tags in certain cases. We also encountered confusion with the flag that controls updates being propagated to Phrase. When we deleted translation keys in our JSON files, they reappeared in the next export to GitHub. After realizing that deletions needed to occur both in the JSON files and in Phrase, things went more smoothly, though it still feels cumbersome to handle deletions in multiple places.

Furthermore, it would be helpful if there were a way to “copy” or reuse a style guide across multiple projects. In our case, we have several GitHub repositories for the same platform, which forced us to manually replicate the style guide for each Phrase project. This was tedious and time-consuming. Additionally, we’ve noticed inconsistencies between the various orders placed with external translators. Some translators have a better understanding of how react-intl handles plurals and variables in JSON files. It would be beneficial if translators could provide feedback on the style guide when something is unclear, and if we could consistently assign the same translators to maintain uniformity in future orders.

Finally, the GitHub Sync integration errors are somewhat hidden. It would be helpful to have access to the synchronization history on a per-project basis, as it was in the past. Currently, this information is buried in the Integrations section. From a UX perspective, offering multiple ways to access this data would be beneficial. A per-project sync history view would add great value.

Small note: I was confused for quite some time, are we using Phrase Strings or Phrase TMS product... It's confusing to us what Phrase Strings even means, that title doesn't give any context on what it's used for.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

We had to make our react application compatible with 10+ languages so it was very helpfull to have a place to manage translations and dispatch the work to profesionals. It's very beneficial for us cause he have no resources to hire or find consultants to translate that many languages and keep all that management centralized.
