Indispensable part of my customer research toolkit

What do you like best about the product?
Dovetail have done an amazing job of tackling some of the most tedious aspects of qualitative research and analysis, which allows me to work faster and deliver more tangible and engaging insights to my stakeholders and clients. I'm particularly looking forward to using some of the recent features which support stakeholders to self-serve insights even more smoothly.

They're clearly listening closely to their own customers and continuously improving and evolving their product.
What do you dislike about the product?
As the product has been through some pretty significant changes, there's been times when I've needed to re-adjust my process and ways of structuring research data. Not a major, but this can take a bit of extra time and effort to adjust!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Making qualitative data and insights more manageable and accessible for everyone.

A time-saving gem

What do you like best about the product?
I’ve been using Dovetail for 4-5 years, and it’s easily one of my favorite tools. Before Dovetail, I manually managed notes and transcripts in Google Docs—it was messy and time-consuming. Dovetail has completely streamlined this process, making everything quicker and much more organised; I think the way I use it is still possibly very basic, but I remember learning the basics to get started very easily.

I use Dovetail almost every day - I write discussion guides every one/two week and log in daily to upload recordings, access old insights, etc.

What I love most:

- The ability to store recordings, transcripts, and insights all in one place for each project.
- The automated features like transcripts, summaries, and highlighting save a ton of time. They're getting better and better, and honestly save me so much time.
- The interface is fantastic—intuitive and easy to use, even for non-researchers like me.
What do you dislike about the product?
While I love Dovetail, there are a few challenges:

- As a small organization, only a few people (~3) have accounts, making it hard for the team to access recordings and transcripts. I’ve worked around this by sharing summaries and recordings via Slack.
- As a designer, not a full-time researcher, the research process (writing goals, guides, recruitment, analysis) still feels time-consuming.
- I wish I could pull insights across projects more easily, rather than having to copy recordings into a specific project to create highlights.
- I'm having issues with the Google Drive integration - for some reasons, I can't pull through recordings automatically, and I have to download and upload each time
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Manual, time-consuming tasks related to user research - Dovetail isautomating processes like transcription, summarisation, and highlighting, which means it's saving me a lot of time and ensures everything is neatly organised in one place.

It’s also improving collaboration between me and the PM on my team. By storing all insights, recordings, and transcripts in a central location, we can easily share findings and work together more effectively.

Dovetail is so far one of the best ways to catalyse research insights to business impact

What do you like best about the product?
1. Streamlined Research Documentation: We were able to organise and manage our research documentation from Confluence to Dovetail in a more efficient way across teams, to make sure everyone has access to the latest information, but also in an accessible way (no long confulence tables anymore)

2. Enhanced Visibility: We reduced "information silos", because Dovetail creates visibility into what other teams are working on, forstering knowledge sharing.

3. Learning Opportunities for non-UX-Researchers: Colleagues who did not learn UX Research, can indirectly learn to work with qualitative data. They can use familiar methods from qualitative content analysis, e.g. tagging and using fields to organise research data meaningful.

4. Quick Deliverables: Dovetail really enabled the creation of quick deliverables for stakeholder communication. E.g. small highlight videos from user interviews can be shared via Teams channels, and even a CSAT data analysis is possible if the right ways are applied.

Pat and other colleagues from Dovetail are also super helpful if we have any topics to address with customer support ❤️!
What do you dislike about the product?
Learning curve involved: There is a learning curve to master when someone starts using the tool. While Dovetail offers self-learning resources, like the Dovetail Academy to help users, it can still take time to use the tool efficiently.

Communication of Deliverables: Dovetail changes the way research outputs are communicated. You shift from classical "Powerpoint slides" to a more accessible insights format. However, the insights created can range from small feedback snippets to bigger reports. dovetail does not directly guide this process, which can make it difficult to create effectie and useful deliverables at first.

Also, you need to learn some of their specific tool language, like what is meant with: "notes" or "data", "insight" etc.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Making research insights accessible across teams, and companies. Also it helps to empathise with the customer in a way that is engaging!

The Best Research Repository I've Ever Used!

  • November 22, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Dovetail is an amazing tool that has transformed my research workflow. Its intuitive interface and powerful features make organizing and analyzing qualitative data incredibly efficient. The ability to tag insights, easily share findings, and access a centralized research repository has significantly improved my team's productivity. I particularly appreciate the seamless integration with other tools and the user-friendly design that encourages collaboration among team members.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only downside I've encountered is related to the Team pricing structure. I wish there were more features available at this level, as many advanced functionalities seem to be locked behind the Enterprise edition. It would be great to access a wider range of tools without needing to upgrade, which could enhance our team's capabilities even further.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Centralized Research Repository: Dovetail consolidates all user research, feedback, and insights into a single platform. This eliminates the chaos of having data scattered across multiple tools and locations, making it easier for teams to access and utilize information efficiently.
Streamlined Analysis: The software simplifies qualitative data analysis by providing intuitive tagging and organization features. Users can quickly categorize insights, making it easier to analyze findings and share them with stakeholders, thus accelerating decision-making processes.
Time Efficiency: By automating tasks such as transcription from interviews and providing AI-driven summaries, Dovetail significantly reduces the time required to gather and analyze data. Users report drastic reductions in workload, enabling them to focus on strategic initiatives rather than manual data handling.
Improved Insight Accessibility: The platform’s powerful search functionality allows users to quickly find relevant information across different projects, enhancing the ability to derive actionable insights from past research. This accessibility helps teams stay informed about customer needs and pain points.

Quick access to insights across thousands of data points

What do you like best about the product?
Dovetail has recently made some significant upgrades that make the tool incredibly valuable. The search bar is literally magic. The new features for automatic tagging and analysis significantly cut down on time to complete analysis and we are already seeing improvements in our non-researchers engaging more with the data they are collecting from customers.
What do you dislike about the product?
Still some room for improvement in the Contacts database, but this is on the roadmap and we are excited to see where it goes.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Centralizing our research data and empowering non-researchers to carry out analysis, speeding up product development times and empathy.

Dovetail is the best research repository

  • November 21, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that I can keep past research materials together with their reports so referencing past data is easy.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's not the best for usability tests because you can't create highlight clips without the participant speaking. Highlights can only be selected based on the transcript/audio, and if there is none then you can't make a highlight
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?

Dovetail made my work as a researcher faster and better

  • November 21, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
How many resources it offerrs to analyze our calls. I really like how creative we can get using the tool. I created my full research roadmap in it and was able to share insights and expand the visibility of my studies easily inside the company.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not being able to anonymize the names on calls in any plan.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Besides having all our calls inside it, the whole product team can use it as bank to find our users feedback across several products without needing to ask researchers to do it for them. I just used the right tags and informed them how to search for the right terms and now they have the autonomy to do it themselves.

High quality, fair price, works exactly like how you would hope!

What do you like best about the product?
The UI is nicely build and is pleasant on the eyes. The best feature is how well the 'tagging' systems works in Dovetail. You can tag specific sentences from a review, and Dovetail will cut that part of the interview out and put it next to the other 'clips' with the same tag. This makes it really easy to give your customer a face and a voice in your company. Little is as persuasive as an image. The automatic transcripions are probably the best on the market, which saves a lot of time.
What do you dislike about the product?
They are working hard on AI features, but they don't work perfectly yet. Also, when you're building a large video from tags (lets say of 20 minutes of video) with many small video's, it becomes harder to navigate with the current interface. Basically you drag and drop the video's into place, but which video is which can become difficult to figure out from just the snapshot. But these are smaller issues, they are in my opinion by far the best on the market and I woudn't switch to any other.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
There are multiple, mainly creating a good overview of the interviews that you've been doing, transcribing them and being able to tag them. Then it helps to make video's out of them and tries to help with the insights as well.

The place to be for user insights

  • November 20, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Organizing research projects and integrating the research pipeline into a single tool is simple.
Using the data fields, I can organize and connect projects, and view filtering is helpful for showing research activities by themes or preferences.
The AI summaries feature for interviews is a game changer for us, as we wear different hats in the organization and are in a short time, accelerating the time to the insights.
What do you dislike about the product?
I do not dislike it properly, but I struggle more with the Insight Report format because we prefer using slides as a company, and the copy-paste process is not straightforward.
The list of users we research is challenging for me if it is not carefully managed.
I want to use templates more, but I didn't find it useful to use a template without having a proper preview and implementing it in the project.
I appreciate the concept of automating clustering, but I found it didn't provide significant assistance.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It helps in organizing a complex research projects by connecting different research activities.
It helps in planning research interviews in the kanban view, so we can track them.
We can extract instantly ready-made insights by keywords when needed, without searching and copy pasting from different pages.
Autmatic summaries is time saving. I can analyze quickly an interview.

Go-to tool for easy qualitative text analysis

  • November 20, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It provides an easy solution for qualitative research analysis that is a typical task when you work with smaller sets of interviews, and other text based artifacts.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nice, but sometimes confusing UI - a bit cumbersome to navigate through different objects of the system.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Analysing text based artifacts (video calls, email correspondence, support tickets, documents, etc.)
