D2L Brightspace Pedagogy Delivery

  • March 31, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the intuitive aspect of Brightspace.
What do you dislike about the product?
Lack of culturally responsive tools to work with.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am solving equity gaps to the neoliberal approach that has been taken from the predominant western singularity of eastern epistemological perspectives and trying to recolonize the technology framework in which education is delivered.

Easy for students + great for faculty

  • March 17, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
D2L has great functionality and tonnes of features that allow integration from all angles. When used well, it's a breeze for students and frees up time for faculty with data capture on the backend. With training, it is incredibly useful for instructors and is easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
N/A I have used Moodle, Blackboard, and Canvas—and D2L Brightspace is the best by a long shot... It has a great interface that is simple for users to navigate and provides plenty of opportunities for engagement between student and instructor, as well as student-to-student engagement. It's great for synchronous and asynchronous, blended, online, and in-person learning.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The optimization of online learning and student engagement is up. It has a great interface that is simple for users to navigate and provides plenty of opportunities for engagement between student and instructor, as well as student-to-student engagement. It's great for synchronous and asynchronous, blended, online, and in-person learning.

So much potential but significant structural problems.

What do you like best about the product?
The feature set is rich and D2L seems to be adding more features on a regular basis. Primarily our teachers seem to like the Portfolio tool and there is some regard for QuickEval.
What do you dislike about the product?
All the features do not operate well together across the platforms. What should be simple instructor functions are cumbersome. For example, an instructor should be able to create an assignment once and post it to multiple courses. This is currently not possible. I am unsure how D2L got this point without considering these simple ways it can massively improve workflow efficiency.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are seeing errors with our Google and Office 365 integrations. Users need to clear their cache regularly it seems. The LOR is also proving problematic. Teachers will not use it under the current circumstances because it does not allow them to upload the things they want to share and collaborate on (assignments, rubrics, quizzes with images).

The benefits lie in our ability to manage courses across the division and to align the LMS with our SIS.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do a longterm pilot before any significant implementation. It takes a long time to tailor the product to organizational needs and training will be a significant investment. Consider that you will likely not see the benefits you were hoping to achieve for at least a couple of years, if not more.

Lots of options with this platform

  • February 23, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like how flexible D2L is for designing and linking content
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the look & feel of how tools work varies across different tools, due to updates happening at different times. Being in the "cloud" of D2L helps get updates quickly and they are responsive to feedback.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Creating classroom spaces for students is the main purpose of this platform. Being able to use various screen sizes and browsers is helpful too - although Safari is tricky to use sometimes. Communicating with students through the various tools is essential for our work in teaching.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Consider how robust you need your software to be - D2L offers a lot of flexibility for instructors, whereas other platforms may have more restricted and limited options - for example, there are many ways to set up the gradebook for calculation options, design, etc. Because of this, more training is needed, but the payoff is worth it.

Suitability of Brightspace for the African market.

  • February 20, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The platform is extremely user friendly.
What do you dislike about the product?
New student experience. No download option. This was a wonderful feature in the old experience for our students to be able to download content and study offline.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have managed to bring education to rural communities and to people that would never have had the opportunity to study at a college or university. Making this learning opportunity available to so many more people and enabling people to upskill themselves has led to wonderful initiatives in rural Africa that is assisting in uplifting entire communities.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Brightspace is a complete package that deals with most issues and very few plugins are required. When comparing prices, make sure you take this into account. It might seem like an expensive option, but with most other platforms you have to take the cost of all the plugins into account as well.

Brightspace Review

  • February 19, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The functionality is excellent and the back-end support and service is exemplary.
What do you dislike about the product?
We had an issue with a system upgrade that changed the messaging in our SCORM file in one of our courses. This causes confusion with the navigation and we have not been able to resolve this issue.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are attempting to conform some Brightspace functionality with business requirements. The example I am thinking about is our need to issue a certificate or badge of completion for a course taken a second time. It seems only one certificate is issued regardless of how many times a user takes a course and completes requirements. This is a bit of a problem for us at the moment. In terms of benefits, we have realized many. Our registrants (39,000) now have equitable access to regulatory learning that was never previously available in the discontinued face to face program.

Great end-to-end solution for certification programs

  • February 19, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Competency-driven assessment design that supports blind reviews associated with custom rubrics. Course designers love content designing using Brightspace provided HTML templates and elements. Very intuitive for users. No training required.
What do you dislike about the product?
Subcompetencies can't be shared in different courses than their parent competencies.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Brightspace validates the competencies required for our teams to execute on our current business projects. We wouldn't be able to offer a legally defensible program in a single end-to-end solution without Brightspace's robust combination of blind reviews, deep item analysis and the ability to link objectives to assessments and assignments at any level -- enabling competency-based reporting that measures results any level of the organization.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Map your organizational structure out for 3-5 years growth before deciding on your org structure.

Modern and Robust Learning Management System

  • February 18, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
There is quite a bit of flexibility and potential built into Brightspace. It is rare that we are totally unable to find a solution to something that our faculty is looking for. The tools available are appropriate and there is plenty of flexibility to integrate other items and products.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the features in Brightspace are present but not quite ready for primetime. While it is nice to get access to a tool that doesn't have all features for it built yet, it can be an issue when we adopt something new and then it changes shortly after.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Besides the standard teaching and learning initiatives, we are able to put data into our administration's and advisor's hands to help with retention and student success initiatives.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Brightspace is a fantastic platform. Make sure you take your time during implementation to ensure you get the platform set up correctly. Your decisions will impact your long-term goals and initiatives in the platform. Really think through your goals and your long-term goals as you are setting it up. Some things are easy to fix in the future, but some can be really challenging. Think big and scale appropriately.

Continually Impressive

  • February 18, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Brightspace has a great UI that makes it easy for both learners and faculty to utilize the system quickly. The multifaceted ways to access elements within a course or module is helpful to meet the variety of preferences users have. Additionally, their commitment to taking customer feedback through the Product Idea Exchange and hearing the voices of clients makes this one of the best platforms I've ever used. Their commitment to customer service is not flawless but is far superior to their competitors. We all have room to grow and D2L Brightspace is committed to growing and developing in every way.
What do you dislike about the product?
While the multifaceted access options are helpful, it can be confusing for new users at times until they become accustomed to the layout and function within Brightspace. I wish bulk editing was a bit easier in some areas but in all honesty that could be a user error or misunderstanding of directions. The one major dislike which is really minor in the scheme of things, is the error messages students encounter when attempting to upload an assignment file are far too generic to be helpful. 99% of the time it is a file name issue so resolving this by either allowing more special characters, refining the message, or even notifying before an upload of the file name restrictions, would be incredibly helpful and reduce the number of helpdesk tickets that are worked for such a simple issue.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
DATA! Data is always a hot topic when it comes to learning and assessment. Our previous LMS had such limited data, but now we can analyze and use the additional tools through the DataHub, S3, and the insights portal to better identify students who are at-risk. Intervene with both students and faculty as needed, in addition to rolling this out to use for regular training of faculty and staff which improves overall efficiency. The price cannot be beaten, especially when we were able to get so much more access to data to make better decisions and provide better learning experiences for students.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Review all your options, ask LOTS of questions, and dig into the weeds-- will this capability still work in the next 6 months or year? or is it going to be sunsetted because of a new improvement coming out?
