Even I Can Navigate Brightspace!
What do you like best about the product?
Brightspace is quite intuitive. Even for people who are "not technical," there is enough information in the system that you can follow breadcrumbs and get where you want to go. It's learnable. As well, there are video tutorials that are very helpful if you get yourself in a pickle.
What do you dislike about the product?
Brightspace has a lot of choices. A lot. I can get caught up in those choices if I don't tune them out. What I do is focus on what I need for right now, for this semester, and then learn the additional information as I need it. Slow but steady wins the race.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My students' assignments are now in the LMS, so I don't have to save paper versions or files of them. If they want to discuss an assignment they handed in two months ago, I have it at my fingertips. And because all of my comments are in BS as well, I can explain every aspect of my grade. That's very convenient,
Power of LOR in Quality Assurance Efforts
What do you like best about the product?
The LOR is a terrific tool to provide consistency in courses. This supports quality assurance efforts to provide a baseline template as well as consistent content across multiple sections of the same course. It also supports cross-course and cross-department sharing of resources.
What do you dislike about the product?
Searching the LOR is difficult. Additionally, if you add/delete an asset, you cannot overwrite it. This causes frustration and extra work to rebuild master courses when changes occur. Could the LOR be more like a Google Drive or SharePoint?
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Brightspace is our LMS for course delivery, institutional communities, professional development, and more. Having these resources in one location is great!
Good adaptable Product that is getting improvements
What do you like best about the product?
I like the fact that improvements are being initiated, although it does take some time to get used to the constant update cycle. The advanced features inside Brightspace provide a vast range of capabilities.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the interfaces are clunky but thankfully they are getting updated! It has taken quite a bit of time to get to this point but they are coming! To be frank, the discussions are stuck in the 90s but I have hope that those will be updated to enable modern features. D2L has been working on updating the UI in several key areas that are going to save faculty time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Brightspace enables us to provide for both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. This capability combined with constant updates prevents the environment from seeming stale and completely antiquated. The recent changes have been received well by faculty and staff.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Discuss what your stakeholders are looking to use and then figure out your goals. Once you get this choose the best product within your price range.
Great integration
What do you like best about the product?
I really enjoy creating content pages and using the various templates that are available. I have been experimenting with editing and creating my own templates. I find this to be much better for creating content than some of the corporate LMS platforms I have used.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only things I dislike about Brightspace are that I am not an administrator in my organization so I don't have access to higher level reporting that I would like to see.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Having the ability to create templates for various content pages and copy that out across the organization is a wonderful way to save time. We have been using course shells as master courses for every term. The number of integrations is very good and I cannot wait to see what I can use Creator + for.
Clean Look, Easy for Students
What do you like best about the product?
Brightspace is pretty organized, given that the Table of Contents is clear on the left (in the Classic experience, at least). It is easy to move most items by clicking and dragging, and the breadcrumb trail works well. Plus, you actually CAN hit the back button in your browser and have it go back, unlike some other LMS.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sub-modules in the Table of Contents could be more obvious, with color-coding or some other identifier beyond just a very slight indent.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is very easy to give special access for students who have accommodations that allow more time or multiple attempts. The recent update that allows you to give a student extra time on all quizzes at once is a huge time-saver.
Innovative, Reliable, and Flexible
What do you like best about the product?
The system is very flexible. There are thousands of permissions that cane be combined with hundreds of configuration variables to provide a highly customizable experience. I also like the language management feature since it allows us to use our own organizational terms to explain various key features.
What do you dislike about the product?
The licensing creates a world of haves and have nots, and the best and most expensive institutions can afford the best features. In contrast, the schools with the least capital end up not being able to serve the neediest students with the best tools since we cannot afford everything.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to deliver a well-designed learning experience to our students. We are also able to provide HR training and a wide variety of professional development to our faculty and staff.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Before you decide on a competitor, make sure that you ask your best faculty to actually teach a course with D2L Brightspace and any other LMS. When we actually tried to teach with various LMS's, it became apparent that D2L functions better.
Best LMS for Virtual and Blended Environemnts!
What do you like best about the product?
The interface is very user-friendly and has a wide variety of options. The Discussion platform is perfect for student engagement in both virtual and blended learning environments.
What do you dislike about the product?
The LMS lacks video integration. Having a fully integrated video system such as Zoom or Meet would help direct instructors into which is best. As well a screen capturing/video recording integration with a platform such as Screencastify would allow for more assessment options for students.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have been solving problems to help instructors engage with learners using the platform. The biggest benefit is the LMS is very adaptable and is wonderful for connecting with users from any distance.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
More video integration in terms of video submission options. Continue to develop resources for the Google Integration and Google Assignments.
Brightspace - Great for K - 12 students
What do you like best about the product?
Accessibility options are excellent and enhance the experience for all learners. D2L staff are responsive and so very helpful - we enjoy working with them! Our students and their families find the LMS very easy to use, and they praise the tools that they access when working in the LMS. Our staff finds the tools very helpful in every aspect of their work - developing courses and content, assessing student work, compiling engagement data, and communicating with students experiencing challenges.
What do you dislike about the product?
Given my experiences with other LMSs, there is nothing that I have to compaing about with D2L. We have been very happy with the service and with the features of the LMS.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are reaching students from K - 12, and we are managing to use the tremendous tools in Brightspace to created universally accessible courses for our students. We can access data from the LMS to inform decisions about course materials and content and to determine levels of student engagement, and that also helps us make decisions about future course development needs and directions.
D2L is a Brightspace to work/teach/play!
What do you like best about the product?
The flexibility of the product. Use a little - learn a bit more. Expand as you go.
What do you dislike about the product?
The functionality of the Discussions tool. It's "awkward."
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
To deliver complex course content to students in a manageable format. The benefits are "build, revise, reuse."
D2L Makes Teaching Fun and Organized
What do you like best about the product?
I use D2L Brightspace for fully online, hybrid, and F2F courses. I love how simple and intuitive the platform is, which makes building courses a breeze. I can easily add items, move them around, and create a course that is well organized and easy to navigate.
What do you dislike about the product?
I like having information at my fingertips when grading, and I've found with the new design, I have to open the assignment in a separate window to access it while grading. Just a slight annoyance.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have used the competency feature in Brightspace to help streamline our assessment process - something we dreadfully needed to improve, and Brightspace helped us do that.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
