User friendly and great customer support

  • August 01, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Even after being away from the developing side for a while, it was easy enough to find the tools and functions I needed to improve one our existing courses. The software is easy to use and navigate through, to find what I needed.

Despite the ease of use, there were a few questions I had and contacting customer support was a pleasant experience. They were able to reflect on my questions and respond in a very reasonable timeframe.
What do you dislike about the product?
While a lot of people are familiar with the platform (our local post secondary institutions use D2L Brightspace as well), we do have some participants who are not comfortable using it, especially with the new format. There used to be a navigation arrow that will take you to the next page, but they now have to navigate using the contents menu, which they have found to be cumbersome.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to provide course content online for participants to review ahead of time, so they are more prepared for the course. Evaluations are also easy to do and immediately visible to participants.

D2L Brightspace is hands down a fantastic platform!

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Its easy to navigate, has great features and customer support is fantastic!
What do you dislike about the product?
When adding users, often times they aren't able to login, so we have to reset their login.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Materials are accessed prior to the training program (in person) beginning...so they go into the classroom educated. They can also complete the online component at their own pace when it suits them.

D2L Support Cannot be Beat

  • July 15, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
D2L has some of the most friendly support staff. They helped our institution through some wild events and were always available for questions. D2L Brightspace is highly customizable to meet your needs and is constantly updating.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing! They are fantastic. More data please.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Brightspace is helping our instructors make accessible, effective online content while also supporting data analytics of said practices. This is through both the baked in digital accessibility tools, such as asking for alternative text when inserting an image, and add on services from third party tools such a Yuja Panorama.

Focuses on end user - the student

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
This learning management system focuses on student learning, student engagement, accessibility, and UDL above other needs. The concentration on the needs of students is what sets D2L apart. In recent years, they have also made several updates to enhance the ease of use for educators and designers. The LMS is intuitive and easy for beginners through advanced users. The embedded HTML templates, accessibiilty guides, and helpful tips from the Community also promote student learning and faculty convidence.
What do you dislike about the product?
While an odd statement because how could it be a negative? The level of customizability of the platform can be overwhelming for a new users, but this can be easily mitigated by the administrators on campuses in the simple to use toggle system to turn features on and off.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The platform allows continued enhancement to meet the growing educational and technical needs of an ever changing and diverse student population.

Great UX for learners!

  • July 12, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
D2L Brightspace provides a great user experience for our corporate learners. Most LMS platforms that I've experienced look like they're stuck in the 90s. Brightspace provides a much more dynamic and modern interface for our audiences.
What do you dislike about the product?
Brightspace is very focused on uses for higher education & k-12 learners. They're still working through corporate use cases but they're getting better each quarter!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
D2L is bringing a modern corporate learning experience to our learners. The platform is allowing us to think more hollistically about learning and helping us create semester-like learning experiences even at the corporate level.

Most comprehensive LMS for Higher Education

  • July 11, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have used all of the major LMS packages available in the HE space, and D2L's Brightspace is the most effective from a technical and teaching/learning standpoint -- I've had the pleasure of seeing it from all three perspectives. With the correct product setup and understanding of digital pedagogy, it is possible to create learning experiences that are seamless and engaging for students in the online space, whether this is the mode of delivery or as a supplement.
What do you dislike about the product?
The embedded email system is antiquated. Because of the massive amount of customizations possible, some clients may have a very different experience in terms of tool availability, ease of use, and standard layout. My institution has a rather large, internally-tiered customer support system, so I can't comment on what users might expect from D2L.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have had struggles with incorporating interactive activities into the online learning space, but I have recently learned that D2L has made this functionality more streamlined with their Creator and Lumi suites, and with H5P (which is now an official partner).

Best LMS for our college!

  • July 11, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Brightspace is user friendly for both faculty AND students! The layout is easy to read and simple to navigate. Our students and faculty easily transitioned from our old LMS to Brightspace, and have been very happy with the change! Our implementation team was so helpful, and worked through the transition with us to make is seemless. Customer support has been great when faculty or admins had questions. The array of tools and features make this LMS fun for our faculty to use, and they are enjoying adding new features to their courses each semester! Our external tools integrate well the the LMS, making it a valuable resource full of enrichment activities for our students!
What do you dislike about the product?
So far, after three years, I haven't found anything I dislike about brightspace!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our previous LMS wasn't very interactive. Today's students enjoy being offered a variety of activities and resources to help them learn, and Brightspace provides that! Our LMS use has transitioned from a repository of files (the old one!) to an active and engaging tool to support learning at our college.

Brightspace: LMS with relevant features for higher education

  • July 11, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The platform is mostly user-friendly, which makes it generally easy and simple for most instructors and students to use and interact with. The fact that the company (D2L) offers clear, accessible, and free templates (Daylight) helps simplify course organization, ensures the content is accessbile, and encourages consistency throughout the course. An added bonus is that users do not need to know how to code (HTML) to use the templates, they can use them as-is and copy-paste extra elements (provided in the templates), when needed.

Also, users can choose from a variety of languages for the display (the user (instructor/student) provided content is presented in the language in which it was written). This is definitely important for institutions that offer courses in more than one language or whose students come from diverse cultural/linguistic backgrounds, as it enhances accessibility.

Finally, it is possible to integrate many third-party apps. This enhances the utility and functions of Brightspace and helps simplify and streamline some of the activities instructors may want to use in their classes.
What do you dislike about the product?
Although D2L is working on improving the consistency and accuracy of the terms and labels it uses throughout Brightspace, these are not always consistent or correct and causes confusion and frustration at times.

In addition, some of the embedded tools and functionalities have a steep learning curve as they can be rather complex and difficult to master. This has caused frustration for some instructors leading some to not use Brightspace tools to their full potential.

An ongoing issue for me has been the difficulty and time required to grade discussion forum posts when students post anonymously. These posts need to be graded manually, which can be overwhelming when teaching a large class, for example. Although I believe the option to post anonymously is important, not just for accessbility reasons but also to encourage students to communicate openly and honnestly, especially when the topic is personal or controversial.

A last challenge with Brightspace for me is with the integrated grading tool. It can be clunky and difficult to use and issues often arise. For example, it is difficult and frustrating to annotate/comment/grade using the handwriting (or drawing) tool. Extra lines are often added and the annotations are not always saved.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Problem 1: simplifying and streamlining learning and assessment activities. Being able to integrate numerous third-party apps not only can simplify the instructor's job, but can also enhance collaboration in the classroom (or online). It encourages innovative teaching methods and makes the learner's learning experience richer.

For institutions that offer courses and programs in more than one language or who cater to students from diverse cultural backgrounds, the ability for each user to choose their preferred interface language helps ensure it is accessible and inclusive for all. In addition, tools like the home page, customizable widgets, checklists, and announcements help to streamline and improve communication with learners by helping guide them through course requirements, deadlines, and activities.

One of my favourite benefits is the free, accessible, and easy to use templates offered by D2L for Brightspace. These templates help encourage consistency within and across courses. This can enhance the learner experience by reducing confusion and cognitive load and thus improving engagement and supporting learners to be successful.

Easy to administer, easy to teach, easy to learn!

  • July 11, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ive used Brightspace for 10 years as an Administrator. I have also used it as an Instructor, and as a Student. In all roles I have found the tool to be intuitive, engaging, easy to use, and esthetically pleasing. There are a number of our of the box tools and features to meet my needs, and great support teams to work with if or when custom solutions may be needed as well. We have worked with the Learning Creative Services team on many projects and have always been excedingly happy with the process, level of customer service, and projecyt outputs.
What do you dislike about the product?
We have encountered very few challenges that could not be resolved with the appropriate supports. I do wish there was more accurate tracking of content consumption (marked as completed as soon as a learner touches a lesson, not once they complete it or engage with its content)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
D2L has allowed us to ensure a consistent and positive onboarding experience to all new staff. It now serves as the one stop shop for learning at our organization and staff know it is where to go to find answers they are looking for. It also facilitates the delivery of all our external facing learning programs to audiences around the world, securely and reliably.

What do you like best about the product?
Brightspace is easy to learn for both faculty and support personel. The support from Brigthspace is awesome and they want you to be successful in what you are using the LMS for. The implementation team does a good job of answering questions and making sure you stay on track with your timeline.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing. Brightspace is really likable.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
They are keeping up with what their customers ask for and are doing research to best implement the products they have available.
