What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu desktop system can be a work environment for developers and at the same time be a system for non developers. It provides a bunch of software that you can watch movies ,play games. the most convenient is that you can even have a duel system on your desktop .
What do you dislike about the product?
Though it's the best chose for developers as work environment. it may has problem with video drivers, it's performance is not as good as windows.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu is my working system which I use to do software development for my company, also I use it for open source upstream contribution. the benifit is that I have a deep understand of the open source software and I would like to contribute to open source software, which is impacted by using Ubuntu.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
you have to learn a lot at starting time to use it, but once you are familiar with it, you'll love it.

What do you like best about the product?
This OS is super user friendly, and easy to learn. It is a solid platform that trumps Windows or Mac any day
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing. Once you get your OS set up to the way you like it, it is smooth and easy
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
None to be honest. If I were to use an OS for business however it would be Ubuntu or another Linux based product.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Definitely recommend this if Windows or Mac isn't your jam.

Easy, Light, Effective, and Well Maintained Linux Distro

  • July 22, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Quickly and easily setup a desktop or server environment with little effort. You can have a fully functional LAMP stack with all the trimmings up and running in no time with very little effort.

The amount of support forums and documentation for the distro is IMMENSE. If you have a question about how to do pretty much anything in the OS, then the answer is out there in the community forums and/or documentation.

Package and application management is an absolute breeze and incredibly intuitive once you learn some of APT's basic functions and commands.

The distribution itself it well maintained with pretty regular updates, making it one of the most stable and secure operating systems around. It's extremely well balanced and just work "out-of-the-box" with little hassle in expanding it when compared to other Linux distribution flavors.
What do you dislike about the product?
Keeping track of certain dependencies and replacing obsoleted dependencies can become a problem when updating certain software, especially to experimental development versions.

Certain hardware support can be lacking at times.

The standard Unity desktop that Ubuntu ships with isn't the most pleasant to look at, though it's functionality is just fine.

There isn't a lot of commercial office, productivity, design, or development software available at the moment.

It should be noted that most of these complaints are specific to Linux in general and not just the Ubuntu distribution.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Ubuntu Server as my operating system for all my VPS hosting and have Ubuntu Desktop at my home for testing, and debugging before deploying to my VPS hosting providers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are a web developer or have aspirations to become one, than it's well worth it to familiarize yourself with Ubuntu and Linux in general since most of the web runs on Linux and LAMP stacks.

Sharp Learning Curve, But Worthwhile

  • June 16, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The fully customizable interface and lack of bloatware that both Windows and Mac OS suffer from.
What do you dislike about the product?
The lack of support from a decent amount of large software publishers means that you have to find substitutes for programs that you were comfortable with on other operating systems.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu provides a safer digital work environment for people who have grown weary of being simultaneously hassled and nickel and dimed by Microsoft and Apple.

Great for experts

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is free, open-source, and highly customizable, you have a very fine control of your parameters. Moreover, Ubuntu is light and can coexist with other Operating Softwares.
What do you dislike about the product?
If you don't know what you are doing you can break your system and lose data. Not compatible with lots of software available for other Operating Systems like OSX or Windows (including games).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu is my main Operating System at work, it has everything needed: text editors, console, browsers...
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Don't jump into it without some knowledge of how everything works. You can destroy all of your data in seconds because of an incorrect command.

What do you like best about the product?
It is very easy for a computer science student like me to do all projects on Ubuntu. This is mainly because any installments required on Ubuntu (especially 14.04) is very easily guided by several blogs online. Also, "howtoubuntu.org" is very well documented and is usually very helpful.
What do you dislike about the product?
Ubuntu is quite satisfying for the kind of work I use it for.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Various Computer Science Projects - Web Development, Computer Networks, Machine Learning, Image Processing, etc. The benefits mainly are that Ubuntu 14.04 is very popular and hence, almost all queries related to it are resolved very easily via online documentations.

What do you like best about the product?
With Ubuntu you can literally do anything you can imagine with close to zero cost. I strongly believe that it is the most powerful OS out there
What do you dislike about the product?
The simplest thing requires exceptional IT knowledge. For a non IT user it can be hard if something is not working as it should.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Normal OS use. Internet browsing, office applications etc. You can do anything as any other OS but with close to zero cost.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are looking for a fast, reliable and free solution, go for it
