The ideal desktop operating system

  • September 14, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is an operating system basically desktop that has nothing to envy its competitors Windows and Mac. It has the best of all worlds, is fast as linux systems, is stable and is updated as Mac systems, and has available of applications like Windows. It is also compatible with all hardware like Windows.
What do you dislike about the product?
The negative points of Ubuntu are few, only lacks compatibility with Office without a virtual machine, it is a bit tedious to have to start Virtualbox every time you have to modify something, and on the other hand, there are some graphics cards that are also very problematic . I would like to see if in version 18.10 this is fixed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Ubuntu in most computers, since for the work we do it is very practical. Through SSH and a terminal we can manage our equipment and those of our clients. In addition to the applications integrated in Ubuntu we can do hardware maintenance perfectly, with tools for analyzing SMART discs or network tools for example.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Simply ubuntu is the best option, since it allows you to do everything you would do in windows or mac, but faster and better, without viruses or problems.

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is an operating system based on Debian and maintained by the company Canonical. It works with a package system called Aptitude that greatly simplifies the installation of new packages or the update of them. It's compatible with almost all computers, and for me the best, there aren't virus or other issues like happens in Windows.
What do you dislike about the product?
In general nothing disgusts me in Ubuntu, I could only say that I do not like to include applications not free or with adds.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Ubuntu as the operating system because it is currently fully advanced and there is no problem with drivers or graphics cards or sound carby default in all of our systems, because it is currently compatible with all of our computers, and there aren't problems with drivers of graphics cards or sound cards like a few years before.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Ubuntu is great as operating system, is free and fully meets the requirements. There are two releases each year and behind Ubuntu, there are thousands of people working to make it great.

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is the most used Linux distribution, at this in my opinion is because it's the best one for much people. This is because Ubuntu it's an open-source distribution, with a big company behind that put money to do it big, and it's easy to start and easy use for almost everybody. Apart from that, it's reliable and stable operative system, and the maintenance of the system it's easy with the updates and releases program.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only bad thing of Ubuntu it's the inclusion of Unity in the last versions, but there are a solution, you can install xUbuntu and work perfect with xFce.

I work as network administrator of a Linux oriented company and for me work with Ubuntu it's essential. I use it as desktop environment but also it's reliable to other tasks, including use it as a server operative system.
One of the things that I like from Ubuntu is the releases program, there are new releases every six months, and main updates every two years, this means that you can get your system updated very often. Also this releases are available with different graphical environments, Gnome, KDE, xFace or unity.

Ubuntu it's an amazing operative system and it's valid for everybody, but fits specially perfect with the people that works as system administrators or software developer.
In Ubuntu you can do whatever you want with a level of detail very high, at difference of windows/mac environments, in Ubuntu if you have a good knowledge you can tune it to fit with your needs perfectly.
Also Ubuntu it's much faster than their competitors, needs less hardware resources and it's more stable.

A refreshing change!

What do you like best about the product?
Where do I begin? Transformed my 6-year old laptop that was crawling under Windows to a snappy-fast machine. Linux has reached a stage where it is a serious operating system that caters to different users, from novice computer users to power users. The interface is very easy to understand, the system comes with Libre Office that is a worthy alternative to MS Windows, and much, much more. I was a Windows holdout for a long time. Really liked Windows 7. Skipped Windows 8. Loathed Windows 10. It seemed like my laptop had a mind of its own when running Windows. There was this feeling that my laptop was sneakily doing something behind my back. I felt that this version of Windows is just .... kludgy. And there ware the constant Windows updates.... After I got blue screens on multiple occasions, I realized it was time to move on. And I haven't looked back.

Ubuntu gave a new life to my old laptop. I am able to perform all tasks that I used to do on Windows without any issues. Most of the software packages are free. It is reassuring to know that you can take any old laptop and as long as you backup your files and the logic board is still alive and kicking, your computer will live on. Hard drive died? No problem, just install a new hard drive, reinstall Ubuntu for free, copy your files from your backup, and you are back on the road. While Macs do offer this feature, the hardware for Mac is still quite expensive. With Ubuntu, you can buy an old laptop and get yourself a decent performer for very little money.
What do you dislike about the product?
Support for Linux distros is not fully there yet. There still some areas where the interface is not as polished as, say, a Mac (document viewer comes to mind). Still, for what it is, the operating system is incredible.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Primary operating system, freed myself from the clutches of Windows.
