A very convenient OS for developpers

  • October 11, 2019

What do you like best about the product?
As a developer i've switched to ubuntu 2 years ago and since then i never got back to any other OS, because ubuntu helps you to install any development environment with simple command lines, and with a whole community behind to help you in case of installation errors.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is nothing i dislike about ubuntu, what will be preferable is supporting more games
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use ubuntu for python development, and recently blockchain simulation. What i've managed to solve using ubuntu is running a docker simulation which is not 100% supported by windows.

Best OS for developers

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Free and open source operating system with powerful system built on Linux is what Ubuntu is all about. It is so easy to use even when you are switching from Windows. There are no long running unnecessary jobs running in backend, less chance of getting attacked by a malware and free to use license is why I switched from Windows to Ubuntu.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes there is this annoying message when I boot up which says, "System program problem detected" which doesn't provide any troubleshooting or any way to fix the problem.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu is my go to Operating System for both work and home PC. Its simplicity and nice UI and fast extfs file system makes it a great OS for a developer. Since a lot of IDE uses many small files to perform tasks such as compiling, debugging, extfs does the job faster than ntfs file system which significantly improves speed of development.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Once you use Ubuntu you don't go back to Windows. It's simplicity is what makes it best.

What do you like best about the product?
The amount of freedom for a developer i.e. best functionality in an operating system with the ease of use.
What do you dislike about the product?
The lack of daily apps like video players or other standalone apps which are not related to development.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu has made python and C++ development really easy. We are able to focus more on challenging tasks rather than solving OS related issues.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Wonderful operating system if you wish to do some hardcore development.

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is the Linux operation system totally free and open-source software. the interface is very user-friendly. Ubuntu is that the system is supported on an ongoing basis and very often there are updates and security patches. Ubuntu is that we don't need to use antivirus software, because Linux-based systems are very secure., you can configure Ubuntu like a layer 3 switch, like router, firewall.. whatever you can thing.
What do you dislike about the product?
some of the modern(popular) games don't support Ubuntu OS. sometimes graphic quality is low. Linux is the software limitation that exists because many of the applications that we have in Windows do not exist in Linux.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I can configure any network services, firewall, proxy, router, switch, and ect. using Linux, I feel more secure in terms of my sensitive information, because it more secure and protected.
Recommendations to others considering the product:

a great and a near to perfect operating system

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is a great Linux based operating system that is very stable and secure. It is also free and open-source. Moreover, Canonical is trying to make ubuntu better year after year. In fact, every year there is a new stable release. ubuntu provides a really long Long Term Support that can reach 5 years (Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, for example, has an LTS period of 5 years ). Also, ubuntu has a large community base and very good documentation. ubuntu has a large software base. In fact, most of the available software has an installable ubuntu package. Also, it is very easy to use and play with.
Ubuntu updates are smooth and not aggressive.
Most known software run smoothly on ubuntu (Docker, Kubernetes, Openstack, chrome, Firefox, VirtualBox, VMware...).
Ubuntu also gives to users the possibility to customize the system
What do you dislike about the product?
Adopting a new kernel version is very slow. In fact, the Ubuntu developers need a "lot of time" to use the latest longterm kernel version.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu helps in different phases (from a software development point of view) :
- In the development phase: using Ubuntu to develop a piece of software makes your life easier thanks to th tools, editors, CLIs and IDE that can run on Ubuntu.
- In the test phase: Ubuntu provides great tools to test a piece of software and makes it easier for developers to test their software
- In the production phase: Ubuntu is a very stable and secure operating system which makes it a serious candidate to run your software in production.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Ubuntu is the right operating system to start with. It is very easy to use, secure, fast and not resource demanding OS.

What do you like best about the product?
The amazing community and overall easiness of the OS itself. It really allows for an entry-level user to quickly adjust to the new environment
What do you dislike about the product?
The recent update to Unity desktop implemented some major changes in the UI. Could have the option to select this more easily
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
When we think about which OS to install this immediately comes to our mind. When we have the chance we go for this instead of Windows

What do you like best about the product?
"Ubuntu is one of the best Operating System for me. I can easily install PHP, Apache and MySQL etc within a minute. For the beginners, it is a little bit tough to understand but for the experienced person, it is very easy to set up the environment in Ubuntu. It is free and easy to install. It is virus free. There are tons of support article over the internet if you face some issue. Ubuntu launches the new version 18.0 which is really very fast. Also, I am using Ubuntu on my servers as well so it makes me familiar to host the website easily. "
What do you dislike about the product?
If you install PHP and MySQL, so please do it very carefully. if something stuck on the machine like version mismatching, it takes your 4 to 5 hours to fix this. The best way is you need to format the system and install all the software again. This is only thing which I dislike.

Need an operating system user friendly but free, solid and open?

  • September 22, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
it's free but there's an intelligent support by Canonical. It's the linux distribution that really achieved making it really user-friendly. it's about 10 years I use it and I had no problems or crash I couldn't recover. it's really solid and have great support by all linux community. Ubuntu users has so grown that third-party software often release builds for ubuntu aside windows and mac ones.
I use Ubuntu on a daily basis and I think I would never turn back!
What do you dislike about the product?
As it's linux, some hardware features have no or little software support by vendors. Sometimes You have to dig into community forums or blogs to find how to do some very basic tasks that windows (or mac) do in a more friendly manner. Unfortunately, most of those instructions and explanation are so technical that I even don't understand. Cannot realize what would mean this for a normal user...
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Using Ubuntu allows me to be more productive on my own job because I can install
many software that are a valid open source alternative to expensive proprietary products.
Also, as it is Linux, I know exactly what system is doing. In case of problems there's often a very technical user or programmer that was in the same situation and in some way found a solution.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
One fundamental recommendation is not to change desktop environment. Even it is possible (many users successfully have done tha, e.g. installing KDE) I know that it makes harder upgrading ubuntu. Specially with major release. So, keep using desktop environment shipped with Ubuntu (Gnome), and you'll reduce incompatibility issues.
