A stable solution that is easy to access and deploy and has a helpful community of users

  • December 18, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

The solution is used for sandboxing and testing. We also have our production servers in Linux sometimes.

How has it helped my organization?

The product is easy to access and deploy. There are a lot of communities that help administrators with any challenges. Good support is available over the Internet. It is quite helpful for creating any server. Many communities are working on the upcoming advanced features and making them easier for the end users.

What is most valuable?

The integration with other solutions like Apache is valuable.

What needs improvement?

Official support is low. We’re mostly dependent on community users. The vendor must provide an official support team. Administration is a challenge. We need good skills for implementation.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for 10 to 12 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The product is quite stable. I rate the stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The tool is scalable. I rate the scalability a nine out of ten. We usually publish our web servers on it. It is for production purposes. Five to six people from our organization are working on Linux administration. We also have developers developing applications on it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used CentOS. CentOS is now decommissioned, so we moved to Ubuntu Linux.

How was the initial setup?

I rate the ease of setup a seven out of ten. Ubuntu is a command-line tool. It will be a bit of a challenge for new users. The cloud deployment takes four to six hours. If we already have VMs on-premise, we can deploy them in four to six hours. We just need to install an image and build it in. Nowadays, we have readymade images available as a container. It hardly takes one hour to get the server up and running. One person is enough for the deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The solution is open-sourced.

What other advice do I have?

If someone wants to create cheap servers, Ubuntu Linux is the best choice. Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

A solid Ubuntu distribution for

What do you like best about the product?
Removes most of barriers to switching to using a Linux-based operating system - hardware support is good and generally out-of-the-box, and the combination of using a GNOME-based window manager plus Snap store for add-on software has meant there are very few problems I can't solve. Installation is very straightforward and requires very little manual configuration unless you want to customize.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some parts of the user experience are not quite as refined as similar on popular commercial operating systems, and the availability of commercial software is usually an afterthought, but these are the case for any Linux distribution - Ubuntu has been around long enough to become somewhat mainstream.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu Desktop is the primary operating system on my work computer. I rely on it to do 100% of my job as a software developer.

Unity desktop environment and about the size of Snap packages and the resources they consume.

The source code of the operating system is freely available for anyone to view, modify, and distribute also for their stability and security. This is particularly beneficial for servers and systems that require high reliability.

Ubuntu, the best OS

  • November 25, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the customizability of Ubuntu. And with something like Gnome, you can get a great and awesome UI. And Ubuntu is straightforward to install or even dual boot.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes, the package installation gets harder since you have to use the terminal. But it's fine once you get used to it. Some games, that can be played on Ubuntu, might get laggier.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I really like the fact that you are not gonna get so less virus attacks compared to the other OSs. And the customizability of the OS is an awesome fact that Ubuntu has.

Daily Life Usage of an Open Source Operating System: Ubuntu

  • November 24, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is very lightweight in terms of CPU and RAM usage. My primary usage was web and Flutter development, so my primary target was to save some RAM due to constrained computer specs. In general usage, one would easily see 1.5 GB to 2 GB RAM memory saved. The second advantage of other distros of Linux is a very large community to solve and fix the problems that one would face.
What do you dislike about the product?
I developed Unity applications as a hobby and when I installed Unity on Linux, there were lots of bugs. Moreover, there are many applications such as Adobe apps, and CAD software that aren't supported by Linux.

There are some other distros such as Zorin which are even lighter than Ubuntu in terms of resources. So one would try to use that also since all are Linux distros. Zorin appears to be more similar to Windows UI which is very helpful for beginners or those who shift from Windows OS.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I shifted from Windows to Ubuntu primarily for development and my PC resources were exhausting, so shifting to Ubuntu saved me on average 1.5GB RAM memory on average.
