A good balance for an entry into open source operating systems

  • September 11, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
When you mention Linux to a normal user, they are very easily intimidated mentioning how complicated it is to setup and use vs Windows operating systems. Ubuntu sets out to change all of that and has perfect balance between being user-friendly while still maintaining everything Linux stands for.
What do you dislike about the product?
The newer versions of Ubuntu are now relying on better graphics hardware. While it does look nice, I wish they would go for more lighter approach for the default editions, and if required a more fancy setup for those who have the hardware.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
For small and medium business enterprises, software licensing costs can be a huge burden, especially in developing countries. Ubuntu allows you to explore the world of free and open source on a native level.

Using Ubuntu in Windows

  • September 09, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's the best alternative if you do not want to install virtual machine. It's installed inside WSL which is a built-in feature from Windows itself. So we can use Ubuntu like in its native OS.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only minus in WSL because it does not provide a GUI for us to use. It's only like a headless ubuntu and the only way we can use is from the command. If you're new to Linux, it can be a trouble.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
When we are developing something especially softwares, we want to deploy the app as soon as possible to the server. Using Ubuntu Desktop can help me to deploy faster without installing another OS.

A stable and free solution that is easy to deploy and has a user-friendly GUI

  • August 28, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We can use the solution for browsing. We can also use it as a server and deploy and configure it as a file or web server. The use case depends on the user. I use it to deploy something which I want to test out. If I have to test out ELK Stack, I might use Ubuntu because it’s free.

What is most valuable?

The GUI is user-friendly.

What needs improvement?

The solution must provide more integrations.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution from time to time whenever I require it.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the tool’s stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I am using the solution for my personal needs. It is possible to increase the number of users depending on who uses it.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used Windows. I use Ubuntu only for testing purposes. Some things can only be tested on Linux.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward. It takes 15 to 30 minutes to deploy the OS. The product can be used on the cloud as well. However, I have deployed it on my own laptop.

What about the implementation team?

I deployed the solution myself. We have to follow the standard OS deployment process to deploy the tool. We do not need any consultation. We might need a live CD, or we can download the image from the Internet. We can boot from the USB and just follow the instructions. It will be deployed.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There is no licensing cost for the product.

What other advice do I have?

Ubuntu improves its products every year. Earlier, the GUI was not good, so Ubuntu improved it. They have removed the complexity of the software. My recommendation depends on people’s use cases. If someone wants to test something that is more stable on Ubuntu, they can use the solution. They can use other Linux flavors like Red Hat, too. Overall, I rate the solution an eight or nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu server is a free opensource server for needs. Its Package management tool API(Advance package tool) helps users to install, manage and update software utilities. I feel i am using a secure server as it is provided by ubuntu and its gets frequent security updates.
Other best things, that I like about US is that it has easy to use interface, it supports wide range of applications
Hosting large scale applications are a piece of cake for US, orchestration of services is very quick via US. I also used docker containers to run appliactions, its easier to debug details related to memory, performance overload via commands very easily.
What do you dislike about the product?
Being a technical and experienced person I haven't observed any dislikes related ubuntu server but yes I have observed that new folks did struggle to get used to it and feels that documentaiton cab be improved to some extent.
Few things that I have observed related OS is its not as secure as other Linux distributions such asDebian orCentOS also it takes more resources hence applciations tends to get heavy at times.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu Server efficiently tackles the complexities of server deployment and management. It simplifies setup, offers secure software management, and benefits from an active community. Long Term Support (LTS) ensures stability, while cloud and container compatibility meet modern needs. Its versatility suits various use cases, embracing open-source innovation for a robust server solution.
I would like to share some points which Ubuntu server helps me.
1. Managing user and privleges is very easy via US, I can use it do contol different permissions at different roles.
2. It helped me in troubleshooting/debugging issues quickly, there are number of commands that ubuntu supports and one can use -l flag to see the description/documentation of usage.
3. Ubuntu Server provides various tools and commands to configure and manage network interfaces, DNS, routing, firewall, and other network services
