Discovering extensive documentation and seamless software integration elevates daily operations

  • June 23, 2025
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

Ubuntu Linux is my operating system for daily use, and because I am related to networking operations, I prefer Linux over Windows. The FortiClient in Windows is very limiting and the IT department most of the time doesn't know how to open certain ports or are very limited in their skills with FortiClient, so I have more freedom to open ports and run some services with it.

What is most valuable?

One of the best features of Ubuntu Linux is that if I need something, I just download it. Everything I need I could search for on the net and just download it and use it, whereas Windows is more problematic.

Ubuntu Linux's rapid support and extensive documentation are fine to me. Every time I need to do something, I find well-explained documentation about the process, so I have no complaints about the documentation or the info about how to do it.

What needs improvement?

I always use just the LTS versions of Ubuntu Linux, but I found recently some software that needs the 20.04 version, which is out of the support lifecycle, and those systems are needed by us, causing a problem when I tried to upgrade. The systems stopped working and it was a disaster, as they support the LTS but the old ones, and when I need to update some packages, they are out of the support system support cycle.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Ubuntu Linux for maybe 12 years.

How are customer service and support?

I have never rated the support or customer service of Ubuntu Linux as I have never used it.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with the pricing for Ubuntu Linux is that I always use the free version, so I never paid for any installations or support.

What other advice do I have?

I have not used Ubuntu Linux's cloud-init capabilities for configuring or managing instances in cloud environments.

I don't know of any things that could be better with Ubuntu Linux, as everything works fine.

On a scale of one to ten, I would rate Ubuntu Linux a 10 plus.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

What do you like best about the product?
The foremost thing which makes Ubuntu differ from other linux distributions is the vast community support, comparatively better software compatibility and easier to adapt due wide range of documentation and tutorial available online.
What do you dislike about the product?
Less support for the gaming applications and lack of hardware integration, especially in terms of GPU integration.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In our company, it is used as the primary operating system with Desktop as a Service due to its lightweight nature and go to OS due to its fast boot time when it comes to virtual environments for application hosting.

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is very useful in the linux environment and is a very lightweight software that eases the production environment deployments and maintenance. It robust OS maintenance enables businesses to focus a step ahead.
What do you dislike about the product?
The documentation of ubuntu is something I feel the space for improvement as the best features of it are dwelled on a requirement basis rather than that of knowledge basis, The documentation development shall enable the Industries to better understand the use of Ubuntu.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is solving the challenges of multiple Docker containers deployment and thereby enabling to focus on the Business rather than that of Production environment tussles

In a sea of operating systems : Ubuntu stands out.

What do you like best about the product?
Taking into consideration that one mostly or usually installs it over a Windows system (which they don't have to do & experiment it much less often), I appreciate :
i) ease of installation, update (livepatch, landscape or not).
ii) locating applications that are approved is a cinch via the software-boutique
iii) I trust Canonical to make a secure product that rivals the best out there.
iv) interesting the chose to leave the apt-get, apt but can combine with snap and others for package management.
v) landscape is a terrific product especially if combined with a remote access web interface (like dwservice).
vi) I can install it on a newbie's unit and they are up and running very quickly - the learning curb between windows 7 and ubuntu 24.04 mate is easy to overcome.
What do you dislike about the product?
I am a user but also a system administrator, so for what I do :
a) I don't find the default gnome interface as intuitive or user-friendly as Mate, LXDE or others.
b) some products don't have a smooth installation documentation even after several attemps, like OpenStack - whereas MicroStack was much more compliant.
c) my perception is that it's starts to get complicated to be a member of the various forums : ubuntu, charm, ...etc.
d) this is not a dislike, but somehow too many business will opt for redhat, when I feel they could get more with Canonical and Ubuntu.
e) I've run into issues attempting to un-install some products (openstack) as it seems to integrate deeply with many components : unlike a lighter product like virtualbox.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I need a robust yet efficient platform to : do my daily work (desktop/workstation), server administration (web, security, automation) - and not have to worry about many aspects that it take care of for me.
