Sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and bare-metal instances. Larger instances provide more CPU and memory, so the hourly rate rises with instance size. Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each hour reflects one running instance of the selected EC2 type with the Squid proxy software active. The software meters running time only. Fully stopped instances do not accrue software charges, though underlying AWS storage fees may still apply while the instance is stopped.
Pick based on CPU and memory needs for your traffic. Burstable t2, t3, and t3a families suit light or variable loads. General-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n families handle steady traffic. Larger sizes raise the hourly rate as capacity increases.
You open TCP ports 22 and 3128 in the AWS firewall, then connect over SSH using a key pair. Billing starts when the instance runs, regardless of configuration. The proxy listens on port 3128 for client connections once the service is active.
