Within each family, sizes range from nano and micro up through large multi-xlarge and bare-metal configurations. You run only what you need and can stop billing by stopping the instance.

You pay for each hour the chosen EC2 instance runs. One unit is one running instance of the selected size, billed per hour. The software charge is tied to that specific instance type, so larger instances carry a higher hourly rate than smaller ones.
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops. Underlying AWS storage or other resources may still bill separately, but the software licence meters running hours only.
Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type. Burstable t2, t3, and t3a types suit lighter or variable proxy traffic. The m3, m4, m5, and related general-purpose families handle steadier or heavier caching loads. Pick the size that matches your expected network and cache demand.
