You pay by the hour based on the AWS EC2 instance size you run. The software price is the same deployment image; your cost scales with the compute capacity you select. Options span general-purpose families like t2, t3, t3a, m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5ad, m5d, m5dn, and m5n. Within each family, sizes range from nano and micro up to 24xlarge and metal (bare-metal). Larger sizes give more CPU, memory, and network capacity, so they bill at a higher hourly rate. Pick the instance that matches your expected VPN load and number of users.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
One hour means one hour of running time on the EC2 instance size you choose. The software charge is a flat hourly rate tied to that instance type. Each size maps to a set amount of CPU, memory, and network capacity, so your rate reflects the compute you selected.
The hourly software charge applies only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the stopped instance's volumes, but the software meter counts running hours only.
You open ports 21, 22, and 30000-50000 (TCP) in the AWS firewall. You connect over SSH using a generated private key and the ec2-user login. You then install the server manager tool, create a hub, enable network address translation, and add users. These setup steps carry no separate charge.
