The CloudFormation template creates: • Security Group with rules which are necessary for the ZIC appliance (ssh, https and internal ports) • IAM Role with policies for providing application functionality • Instance Profile with the created Role and attached to the ZIC appliance • User can enable Elastic IP creation and attaching to the instance • ZIC appliance instance (based on AWS AMI with storage volume)
When resource creation user should specify the following parameters: • Key Pair name of an existing EC2 KeyPair to enable SSH access to the instance • EC2 instance type for the ZIC appliance instance • Elastic IP creation enabling (disabled by default) • The IP address range that can be used to SSH to the EC2 instances (pass to security group rule) • The IP address range that can be used to HTTPS to the EC2 instances (pass to security group rule) • VPC ID • Subnet ID.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."

Continuous protection has kept our crm running with near-zero data loss during outages and moves
What is our primary use case?
The main use case I find for HPE Zerto Software is business continuity for the CRM system and protecting the infrastructure running CRM database and applications and APIs related services so that they can be recovered quickly after an outage. Additionally, HPE Zerto Software supports customer data protection and continuously replicates the critical customer or CRM data to a DR environment, reducing the potential data loss. If there are any issues and the primary CRM environment goes down, HPE Zerto Software can help and restore the CRM applications and its dependent systems in the DR environment. If the company moves CRM infrastructure from one data center or cloud to another, HPE Zerto Software can support migrations while minimizing the downtime. The CRM team does not technically use HPE Zerto Software directly, but I have been working on this piece and getting things connected in its place. This represents an underlying collaboration with IT and the CRM team for working on this tool and getting things in its place.
Regarding HPE Zerto Software's migration support, the CRM platform was running in a VMware data center. The challenge is that the CRM system is live and customers are continuously interacting with it. The system cannot be shut down for hours and have everything copied. HPE Zerto Software helps by continuously replicating the workloads while the existing CRM keeps running. In our use case, there was a time when there were systems which were down, and HPE Zerto Software helped and came in handy. It keeps our CRM environment running and in its place. This really helps.
How has it helped my organization?
HPE Zerto Software delivers strong strategic value for the CRM platform such as our Retrieval, Salesforce, currently MoEngage. It has helped us with minimal data loss and continuously ensures that the customer records, sales, transactions, and interaction logs are all in place and not lost. For example, if an infrastructure supporting CRM customer data or a critical application needs to move to a new data center or cloud environment, HPE Zerto Software continuously replicates the workloads and enables a quick switchover with minimal downtime and data loss. This helps keep the CRM campaigns, customer service interactions, and critical business applications running without a major disruption.
There are some strong numbers regarding the outcomes with HPE Zerto Software which I would to mention. In a migration, I was fortunate enough to have HPE Zerto Software with us, and it has reduced the migration downtime from hours to minutes. Customer examples show that application recovery was reduced by up to around 97%, while some migrations have been completed in as little as 18 minutes with only seconds of potential data loss. This is definitely effective for us.
What is most valuable?
The best features of HPE Zerto Software are its continuous and near real-time replication, which allows businesses to migrate to or recover the critical applications and data with minimal downtime and very low data loss. For CRM, this means the customer data and the supporting applications can move between the environments while keeping the system operational, making it particularly useful for seamless migration, disaster recovery, and business continuity.
The near real-time replication of HPE Zerto Software really helps particularly with seamless migration. For example, during a CRM infrastructure migration, HPE Zerto Software continuously replicates the customer data and the CRM applications from the older environment to the new ones while the CRM remains live. Once the new environment is ready, the systems can be switched over with minimal downtime and little to no data loss. This provides business continuity and makes the migration feel seamless to CRM users and customers.
Concerning HPE Zerto Software's AI capabilities, governance, and security, the security architecture and strength include real-time encryption and anomaly detection. HPE Zerto Software uses inline ML-driven stream analytics on the storage writes and a clean point-in-time intelligence when an attack occurs. HPE Zerto Software threats analytics analyze and write variants and journal markers to pinpoint the exact second before the infection started. This represents complete, great work done by HPE Zerto Software and really protects our data.
The reliability and the accuracy of HPE Zerto Software are on point, and it has really helped us. To give an instance, there was an issue which was causing damage to our data. When the rollback was quite efficient and on time, that really saved our efforts and data as well. The rollback was on point, and all the credit goes to HPE Zerto Software that helps us on this particular piece.
What needs improvement?
There are some key improvement areas for HPE Zerto Software that need to be taken care of. Targeting migration and recovery in minutes rather than hours, which I would mention as lower downtime and lower data loss. Improving the RPO towards seconds through continuous replications and faster recovery. Automating failures and failbacks so IT intervenes and reduces those failbacks. Continuously ensure for the betterment of the CRM, ensure the application, customer data, and interaction remains available during the infrastructure changes. More automation, particularly towards the DR testing and the migration workflows to reduce the manual efforts. From my perspective in the business cases, the strong improvement would be to reduce the CRM application downtime and data loss risks during migration or outage while making recovery faster and more automatic.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Zerto Software for around 1.5 years, and it is working great.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of HPE Zerto Software is quite commendable, and I am looking forward to how I can use the time and get more out of HPE Zerto Software. I still get new things to know about HPE Zerto Software on a daily basis as I am still working on this tool and getting better on my business as well.
How are customer service and support?
The customer support for HPE Zerto Software was awesome and really helps while I was facing any issues. I would rate the customer support a complete 10 out of 10.
What other advice do I have?
If I have to give a rating for HPE Zerto Software, I would give it a strong nine. The reason behind it would be the near-zero data loss and minimal RTO and RPO. If a bad database migration, an unintended API overwrite, or a ransomware infection impacts the customer records, HPE Zerto Software's granular journaling allows point-in-time rollbacks to the exact second before the corruption occurs. Zero-impact testing, DR drills, and the failover tests can be run in the background without taking the live sales or the customer service reps offline. This is an outstanding thing which has been done. I did not mention a 10 out of 10 due to a SaaS CRM limitation. HPE Zerto Software features specialization in infrastructure and VM-level replication natively. If an organization relies purely on multi-tenant SaaS CRMs such as MoEngage and Retrieval and Salesforce, a specialized SaaS backup tool such as HPE Zerto Software Backup for Salesforce or for SaaS is needed, rather than standard HPE Zerto Software CDP.
HPE Zerto Software continuously writes for data protection every change to a granular rewind journal, and higher transaction databases such as SQL or busy CRM engines generate substantial journal traffic and budgets in high-performance storages to retain target history windows without running out of space. I really appreciate that HPE Zerto Software provides this on point, and it really is good for us. My overall review rating for HPE Zerto Software is 9 out of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Continuous replication has protected our virtual machines and minimized ransomware downtime
What is our primary use case?
The major use case for HPE Zerto Software is to protect virtual machines from ransomware by taking replicas and running all machines from VMware while replicating them to other sites.
Some customers also use HPE Zerto Software on the same site as a backup. They take snapshots to another datastore or another vCenter server and use that as a backup. If something happens, they can start that environment as soon as possible.
Currently, our customers are in the pharmaceutical industry, so they do not go to the cloud with HPE Zerto Software. They prefer on-premises only, and although we are recommending they move to the cloud, they are not allowing it.
How has it helped my organization?
The biggest advantage of HPE Zerto Software is that we can recover machines as soon as possible, so there is no more downtime. If something happens, we can recover that machine in a few minutes.
HPE Zerto Software has an impact on our IT resilience strategy.
When there is some disaster recovery, we have to start our new environment and begin restoring the machine from HPE Zerto Software, but I think we do not have any impact.
HPE Zerto Software does not have any effect on RPO if it is a local site; if it is on the other side, then the RPO will be no more than 15 minutes.
HPE Zerto Software helps to reduce DR testing for testing purposes, as we regularly conduct DR drills, which are useful for us. We can also generate a compliance report that we can share with our customers.
What is most valuable?
The best features of HPE Zerto Software are that we can schedule replication with minimum RPO, meaning it takes no more than 15 seconds to replicate from one side to the other side if there is good bandwidth. We can recover machines with less than one hour of data loss, as customers can tolerate no more than 15 minutes of data loss.
In general, HPE Zerto Software solution is quite easy to use.
What needs improvement?
I need to check if there is anything that HPE could improve in HPE Zerto Software, but there was a query that a customer raised that I do not remember right now. I can send you an email about it.
The area of improvement I remember is related to the interface of HPE Zerto Software; the first deployment was very crucial for us, but now we can do it without any problem.
The drawback with HPE Zerto Software is that once we restore that machine, the original is still working and we restore a new machine, but that IP remains the same. We already raised this issue with the engineering team, but they indicated that the IP will be the same. I think the IP should be removed at that time; when we restore the same machine with a different name, it should get restored with a different IP. It is getting restored, but the IP also comes with that.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using HPE Zerto Software for the last one year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Regarding the stability and reliability of HPE Zerto Software, according to our customer, it is the best product for them, so they keep buying and have increased the license as well. First, they purchased 10 machines; now they have gone to 200.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software license is scalable enough.
To add a new device to HPE Zerto Software, it is easy to do. If a customer adds new servers, we can create a new VPG or add it to the same VPG.
How are customer service and support?
I agree that HPE support for HPE Zerto Software is helpful.
If I had to rate support for HPE Zerto Software from zero to 10 points, where 10 is the best, I would give them a 10.
How was the initial setup?
Our clients usually try to resolve issues while implementing HPE Zerto Software, but we do not have any issues while implementing it. The first time we took support from HPE; now we do not have any issues with implementation.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I think HPE Zerto Software is not expensive, as it comes with five years at not much cost.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
In comparison with other backup solutions like Veeam, Veritas, and others, I would say that HPE Zerto Software is the most advanced one, as there is no competition right now.
Veeam also does not provide that minimum RPO; it has a one-hour or two-hour RPO. With Veritas, there is no competition, and Data Protector is no competition. Only Veeam and Commvault are there, but they do not provide minimum RPO as HPE Zerto Software can provide minimum RPO within a few seconds.
What other advice do I have?
I do not have any examples to compare the speed of recovery with HPE Zerto Software.
Summarizing everything we have discussed about HPE Zerto Software, I would give the product in general 10 points, as 10 points is the best tool. I would rate this review a 10 overall.
Disaster recovery has protected critical services and now provides rapid ransomware recovery
What is our primary use case?
My primary use case for HPE Zerto Software is as a disaster recovery solution and to protect myself against ransomware attacks.
A specific example of how HPE Zerto Software has helped me in a real situation within my organization is that when we suffered a ransomware attack, having isolated copies that were not accessible from our on-premises environments allowed me to recover the backup image of those machines and overcome that attack.
Regarding my experience using HPE Zerto Software in critical situations such as the one I mentioned, it is a tool that I believe is fairly easy to use, given the complexity involved in configuring the type of problem you are trying to solve.
How has it helped my organization?
Now I can say that I have a proven recovery strategy, as it allows you to perform that type of testing for certain use cases without a real disaster, and the recovery processes are quite fast.
My experience when performing those recovery tests has been that being able to recover machines in less than one hour, between different clouds or between on-premises and the cloud, are figures that give me great confidence in the face of any possible disaster.
What is most valuable?
I consider the best features that HPE Zerto Software offers to be the number of different heterogeneous environments it supports and the recovery plans between on-premises and cloud, between multiple clouds, and how easy it is to configure the environments and recovery use cases.
I can elaborate on how compatibility with heterogeneous environments and ease of configuration have made a difference for me and my team, because you do not have to depend on different tools as your organization grows. It allows you to first have a tool configured between an on-premises environment and a cloud environment, and once you have services deployed in the cloud, it allows you to use recovery plans between different clouds to be protected against a possible disaster.
Something that I truly value in this solution is the user interface, which I find very user-friendly.
What needs improvement?
I believe HPE Zerto Software could improve in certain aspects that emerged after HPE acquired this software.
Following the acquisition of this product by HPE, I think there are certain aspects that could be more suitable. Regarding necessary improvements, it would be beneficial to have licensing plans that are a bit more flexible and more accessible.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Zerto Software for more than five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I consider HPE Zerto Software to be stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I rate the scalability of HPE Zerto Software as very good because, as I mentioned before, it allows you to use different clouds and on-premises environments.
How are customer service and support?
I rate HPE Zerto Software's customer support as very good, and I have had direct experience with their support service.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Before using HPE Zerto Software, we used backup solutions from Veeam, but we did not use disaster recovery because it was not as comprehensive as Zerto.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment since I began using HPE Zerto Software, as we have demonstrated resilience against ransomware attacks because we used the tool during one of these attacks.
The primary example of how that resilience has translated into tangible benefits for the organization is the reduction of interruptions, as the ransomware attack did not stop any processes because the information was easily recoverable.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with the price, implementation costs, and licensing of HPE Zerto Software is that, as I mentioned before, the licensing is somewhat complicated and the prices are a bit high.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I did not evaluate other options before choosing HPE Zerto Software.
What other advice do I have?
My advice for other professionals considering implementing HPE Zerto Software is to conduct a proof of concept and to not allow your data centers to be without a disaster recovery tool. I would rate this review eight out of ten.
Journal-based recovery has reduced downtime and supports seamless site-to-site migration
What is our primary use case?
HPE Zerto Software is primarily used for disaster recovery. When you have two sites and want to replicate one site to the other based on the replication context, you can use HPE Zerto Software.
Additionally, if you are planning to migrate from one vCenter or from one hypervisor to another, you can also use HPE Zerto Software.
What is most valuable?
HPE Zerto Software's best feature is journal-based replication. This enables live synchronization from one site to another site, with data written to both sites in such a manner that it would be helpful in many aspects. HPE Zerto Software is one of the major disaster recovery solutions. It has reduced both downtime and costs, and the compatibility is very good. Scalability and all other aspects are excellent with HPE Zerto Software.
What needs improvement?
HPE Zerto Software could be improved by implementing the same built-in image with HP storage arrays. Since there are HP arrays such as Alletra and others, if HPE Zerto Software image could be included in them with add-on features, both sides could be configured in HPE Zerto Software in such a manner. There is still some scope for improvement. However, it is one of the best solutions, so I would rate all aspects at eight, with two points deducted for improvement.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Zerto Software for the last three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software is scalable.
How are customer service and support?
HPE Zerto Software's customer support is good. They fix issues very fast.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have used Dell RecoverPoint earlier, which is similar to HPE Zerto Software.
What was our ROI?
HPE Zerto Software provides good RTO, RPO, and time saved.
What other advice do I have?
If you want to establish or integrate disaster recovery, HPE Zerto Software is one of the best solutions for it. I believe we are a partner or reseller, though I am not entirely certain. I do not have much experience or understanding of HPE Zerto Software's AI capabilities at this time. I would give this product an overall rating of 8.
Reliable disaster recovery has protected critical applications and simplified cloud migrations
What is our primary use case?
HPE Zerto Software is primarily used for disaster recovery from on-premises to Azure Cloud, recovering from disasters, and running DR test failovers from on-premises to cloud as well as within on-premises data centers.
During a recent disaster recovery drill, I conducted a test failover using HPE Zerto Software. Consistency groups are created in HPE Zerto Software, and I predefined a specific application in a group, failing over the database servers first and then the application servers. I successfully recovered the servers in the DR site in Azure Cloud during this test failover scenario.
Another use case involves failing over within the data center from on-premises to on-premises within a radius of 100 kilometers. HPE Zerto Software acts as an orchestration layer for failover, with a test failover performed while maintaining replication at the storage level.
What is most valuable?
HPE Zerto Software offers flexibility in failover, inbuilt data protection, and configurable replication in groups. Additionally, the throttling of network and enabling of compression features improve the process, ensuring replication pairs remain stable with minimal errors during continuous and asynchronous replication.
The compression techniques in HPE Zerto Software helped us transfer minimal data over the network before reaching the WAN layer, effectively using bandwidth. The network throttling feature enabled us to utilize the links between on-premises and cloud without affecting shared network resources. This made HPE Zerto Software reliable, with minimal replication errors and a failure rate close to zero during disaster recovery activities.
The high availability feature in HPE Zerto Software can be configured so that if the primary HPE Zerto Software is down, we can utilize a secondary server for recovery, discovering the replication pairs and performing a failover.
HPE Zerto Software has positively impacted our organization by providing error-free data replication and flexible data protection features, giving us confidence in recovering data from the primary to secondary site as it remains error-free. The virtual protection groups are flexible, allowing us to create them with minimal technical knowledge, ensuring compliance and protection for both technically and business-wise critical applications.
What needs improvement?
HPE Zerto Software's GUI needs modernization to match the flexibility and user experience of other HPE software solutions, as there is still room for improvement in software-level flexibility and the provision of a more visual dashboard for operational insights.
I suggest integrating HPE Zerto Software with Grafana dashboards for enhanced monitoring and implementing proactive AI-driven alerting mechanisms. This improvement should emphasize the integration of AI alongside open-source monitoring tools.

What other advice do I have?
I would say HPE Zerto Software's accuracy is acceptable, with the added AI layer mainly focusing on monitoring and observability. It is designed to detect errors in data replication and alert the end user, enhancing the mean time to resolution with minimal human intervention, thereby improving accuracy and reliability.
For others considering HPE Zerto Software, I recommend it for its near-zero RPO and effective RTO, as well as its scalability. It offers flexibility in failover capabilities and can serve as a migration tool for moving from on-premises to cloud.
My additional thoughts on HPE Zerto Software emphasize the need for improved customer support and timely updates regarding support requirements and version upgrades. Increasing community involvement for addressing issues would also be beneficial. I rate this product an 8 overall.
