This is a repackaged software product wherein additional charges apply for the installation and configuration of apache kafka which is a distributed data store optimized for ingesting and processing streaming data in real-time. It is primarily used to build real-time streaming data pipelines and applications that adapt to the data streams. It combines messaging, storage, and stream processing to allow storage and analysis of both historical and real-time data. It uses a partitioned log model, which combines messaging queue and publish subscribe approaches. It uses binary protocol over TCP.

AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay an hourly software fee for Apache Kafka, which runs as a machine image on an EC2 instance. The many line items are not tiers or plans. Each represents a different EC2 instance type you can choose, from small shared instances to large dedicated and bare-metal machines. The software rate stays the same across instance types. Your total cost varies with the compute size you pick, plus standard AWS infrastructure charges billed separately. You pick one instance type sized to your workload and pay by the hour for as long as it runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly software rate cover, and what am I billed for separately?
You pay one flat hourly software fee for the pre-configured Apache Kafka image. This rate is the same across every instance type. You pay standard AWS infrastructure charges for the EC2 instance separately. Both appear through AWS Marketplace billing.
Am I charged the software fee when my EC2 instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running time by the hour. A stopped instance stops accruing the hourly software charge. You may still pay AWS storage costs for the attached volume while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
Does picking a larger instance type change the software fee I pay?
No. The hourly software rate stays the same on every instance type, from small shared instances to bare-metal machines. What changes is the underlying AWS compute charge for the instance you select. Larger instances cost more on the AWS infrastructure side, not the software side.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
