This product provides Apache Kafka 3.7 pre-integrated with CentOS Stream 9 and delivered as an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) by Hanwei. The image applies Hanwei's security-hardening and optimized performance baseline, includes AWS operational integrations, and is built and exercised on EC2 before publication.
Marketplace software charges cover Hanwei's Kafka and operating-system integration, application of the security-hardening and optimized performance baseline, AWS operational integration, repeatable image construction, and final AMI validation. Hanwei support, including a 24-hour response target, is a supplementary service and is not the sole basis for the software charges.
What Hanwei Adds to Upstream Kafka
Kafka pre-integration: Apache Kafka 3.7 is installed during the image build on CentOS Stream 9, reducing the software installation work required after launch. Kafka cluster topology, listeners, authentication, authorization, encryption, storage, and workload-specific settings remain under customer control.
Optimized performance configuration: The standardized EC2 profile raises the file-descriptor limit from 1,024 to 65,536 and the memory-map ceiling from 65,530 to 262,144. The device receive backlog is raised from 1,000 to 16,384, the TCP SYN backlog from 128 to 8,192, socket buffer maxima are set to 16 MB, TCP congestion-window state is retained across idle periods, and the system journal is capped at 500 MB.
Security-hardening baseline: SELinux runs in enforcing mode. SSH uses a vetted cipher, key-exchange, and MAC policy; X11 forwarding is disabled; the login grace period is shortened; authentication logging is verbose; direct root login and password authentication are disabled. Auditd runs a base rule set for privileged command execution. Kernel settings disable IPv4 and IPv6 ICMP redirects, log martian packets, use loose reverse-path filtering, restrict dmesg, disable setuid core dumps, and disable SysRq.
AWS operational integration: AWS Systems Manager Agent is installed and enabled for Session Manager and Patch Manager. Chrony uses the Amazon Time Sync Service, and the root filesystem expands at boot when the attached root volume is larger than the image default.
Build-date package baseline: Operating-system packages are sourced from official repositories at the versions available when the image is built. Customers remain responsible for evaluating and applying updates after launch.
Repeatable build and EC2 validation: Each version is produced from the same versioned build and baseline process, then launched and exercised on EC2 before release.

Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped or idle?
The hourly software charge meters running instance-hours. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the software licence bills only while the instance runs. You stop billing by stopping the instance.
How do I scale capacity, and how does that change my hourly cost?
You scale by choosing a different instance type or launching more instances. Each instance carries its own hourly rate based on its size and family. Larger, bare-metal, or specialized instances cost more per hour. Running several instances adds each one's hourly rate together on your bill.
