This product has charges associated with it for the build, maintenance, and support of the Amazon Machine Image (AMI). Kafka is primarily used to build real-time streaming data pipelines. It is an open-source system developed by the Apache Software Foundation and written in Java and Scala. Kafka runs on a cluster of one or more servers (called brokers), and the partitions of all topics are distributed across the cluster nodes. Additionally, partitions are replicated to multiple brokers. A Kafka cluster is not only highly scalable and fault-tolerant, but it also has a much higher throughput compared to other message brokers such as ActiveMQ and RabbitMQ. We have packaged and hardened the Kafka service offering so our customers can seamlessly subscribe to this offering with no setup work from their end.
Overview
This is a repackaged open-source software product wherein additional charges apply for support and for providing it in a simple consumable AMI. Apache Kafka is a publish-subscribe-based fault-tolerant messaging system. In comparison to other messaging systems, Kafka has better throughput, built-in partitioning, replication, and inherent fault tolerance, which makes it a good fit for large-scale message processing applications. We have packaged and hardened the Kafka service offering so our customers can seamlessly subscribe to this offering with no setup work from their end. All that you have to do is subscribe to this offering from the marketplace, create topics, publish messages from the producers, and start consuming with the consumers.

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run. This listing bundles pre-installed Kafka with the software, so your hourly rate covers both. The eight dimensions are not feature tiers. Instead, each maps to a specific instance type. The t3 options (micro, small, medium, large) are burstable general-purpose instances for lighter or variable workloads. The m6a, m7a, and m7i options (medium and large sizes) are steady general-purpose instances for sustained throughput. Choose the instance that fits your throughput and compute needs. Your hourly cost scales with the instance you select.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You get a pre-configured server image with Kafka already installed in /opt/kafka. It runs as a system service and starts automatically on boot. You connect via SSH and can begin producing and consuming messages right away. No setup or configuration is needed.
You pay the software charge only while the instance is running, billed per hour. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software fee. Note that separate AWS storage charges for the underlying disk may still apply while the instance is stopped.
All options bill by the hour for the running instance. The t3 types are burstable, so they suit lighter or variable message traffic. The m6a, m7a, and m7i types provide steady compute for sustained streaming. Your hourly rate depends on the instance type and size you select.
