The Kannel Open Source WAP and SMS gateway works as both an SMS gateway, for
implementing keyword based services via GSM text messages, and a WAP gateway,
via UDP. The SMS part is fairly mature, the WAP part is early in its
development. In this release, the GET request for WML pages and WMLScript
files via HTTP works, including compilation for WML and WMLScript to binary
forms. Only the data call bearer (UDP) is supported, not SMS.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run this software on. Each dimension maps to one AWS instance size, so pricing scales with the compute you choose. Smaller instances like t3.micro or m5.large cost less per hour, while large and specialized instances such as GPU (g5, g6), memory-optimized (r-series, x2iedn), storage-optimized (i3en, d3en), and high-memory (u7i) types cost more. You select the instance that fits your workload. You can run as many independent instances as you like, each billed separately at its own hourly rate.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover, and what runs on the instance I pay for?
Each hourly unit is one running EC2 instance of the size you pick. That instance runs the Kannel SMS and WAP gateway software, including the bearerbox and opensmppbox services. You choose the instance type to match your workload, and billing meters running instance-hours.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
Hourly software charges apply while an instance runs. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the software licence meters running hours only.
How does cost change if I run several Kannel instances at once?
Each instance bills separately at the hourly rate for its own instance type. Kannel instances run independently, so you can stand up as many as you like and choose which services run on each. Your total is the sum of every running instance's hourly charge.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
