You buy this hardened Oracle Linux 8.7 machine image by the hour. Pricing is usage-based, so you pay only for the time each instance runs. Every dimension maps to a specific Amazon EC2 instance type, from small general-purpose sizes to large compute-, memory-, and GPU-optimized options. The software rate follows the instance you select; larger or more specialized instances carry higher hourly rates. This lets you match the instance to your workload and scale by choosing a different instance type. AWS infrastructure charges for the underlying EC2 instance apply separately from this software fee.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually receive when I launch one of these hourly instances?
You receive a pre-configured Amazon Machine Image running a hardened build of Oracle Linux 8.7. The image deploys on the Amazon EC2 instance type you select. Each instance you run bills at the hourly software rate tied to that instance size.
Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software fee meters running time only. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue the software charge. Note that AWS may still bill separately for attached storage while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
How does my hourly cost change if I move to a different instance type?
The software rate follows the instance you pick. Moving to a larger or more specialized instance raises the hourly rate; moving to a smaller one lowers it. This change is manual — you select the instance type at launch. AWS infrastructure charges for the instance apply separately.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
