How do I connect? SSH in as ec2-user with the key pair you chose at launch: ssh -i your-key.pem ec2-user@your-instance. Password login is disabled and root may not log in over SSH; run sudo -i for a root shell.
Do I need a subscription? No. The image is registered with Red Hat Update Infrastructure and receives updates through AWS without a Red Hat subscription.
Which version do I get? The newest Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.x at build time: 8.10 today. It is rebuilt on each 8.x point release and as security updates ship. For one fixed minor, use the pinned Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.10 listing.

Ready for AWS from first boot: cloud-init expands the root partition and filesystem to the volume size you launch with, the Elastic Network Adapter (ENA) and NVMe drivers are present and verified, and the AWS CLI is preinstalled. Instead, each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance type, and the software rate follows the size and family you pick. What do I actually get with each hourly instance-type dimension?
Each dimension maps to one AWS Graviton (ARM64) instance type. You run the hardened, minimal RHEL 8 image on that instance. The hourly rate reflects that instance's size and family. Larger sizes and metal variants meter higher software rates. Compute, memory, storage, and GPU capacity follow the instance type you select.
Am I charged the software rate when my instance is stopped?
The software charge meters running instance-hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software rate. Underlying AWS storage fees for the volume may still apply while the instance is stopped. Charges resume once you start the instance again.
Does the hourly price include operating system updates, or do those cost extra?
Updates come through configured RHUI (Red Hat Update Infrastructure) at no additional cost. The image keeps itself current using this setup. You pay the hourly software rate plus the separate AWS infrastructure charge. There is no added fee for the update mechanism itself.
