Debian is a complete Free Operating System . An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. At the core of an operating system is the kernel. The kernel is the most fundamental program on the computer and does all the basic housekeeping and lets you start other programs.
Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel or the FreeBSD kernel. Linux is a piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by thousands of programmers worldwide.

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run. Each dimension maps to one ARM-based (64-bit Graviton) instance size, and the software cost is packaged with your Debian 12 usage. Pricing scales with instance capacity: smaller sizes like t4g.nano and c7g.medium cost less per hour, while larger sizes like c7gn.4xlarge and r6gd.2xlarge cost more. Instance families target different workloads — general purpose (m, t, a1), compute (c), memory (r, x2gd), storage (i4g, im4gn, is4gen), and graphics (g5g). You select the instance that fits your needs and pay only for hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each dimension bills per hour that the matching EC2 instance runs. One hour of the software charge maps to one running instance of that size. The rate reflects the packaged Debian 12 software on that ARM-based instance. You pay for each hour the instance stays active.
The hourly software charge applies only while an instance runs. Stopped or terminated instances do not accrue the packaged software fee. Note that AWS may still charge for attached storage on stopped instances, but the software license here meters running time only.
Each instance size is a separate hourly dimension. You are not locked into one. Launch a new instance of the size you need and stop the old one. Billing follows whichever instances run. The vendor also offers migration support for shifting between configurations.
