Overview
Rocket.Chat is an open source team chat and communication platform. Teams use it for channels, direct messages, threads, file sharing and calls, and businesses use its live chat to talk to website visitors. This image gives companies, schools and communities a working Rocket.Chat server in minutes, so messages and files stay on a server you control.
What is included: Rocket.Chat 8.8.1 on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Node.js, MongoDB 8.0 as a local replica set, Nginx as a reverse proxy on port 80, Mongo Express for database browsing and Webmin 2.660 for server administration. The Rocket.Chat site address follows the instance's public IP automatically. Security is on by default: no Rocket.Chat account ships in the image, so you create the administrator yourself on first visit. Every instance sets its own Mongo Express and Webmin passwords, MongoDB listens only on the server itself, and SSH accepts key-based login only.
What you get on top of the free software: a pre-built and tested image that is ready in minutes, a unique security setup for every server, simple scripts for changing passwords, regular image updates, and help by email whenever you need it. Rocket.Chat Community is open source software licensed under MIT, and MongoDB Community Server under SSPL. Rocket.Chat is a trademark of Rocket.Chat Technologies Corp., and MongoDB is a trademark of MongoDB, Inc. This image is an independent build by ProvenCloud.
Highlights
- Ready to chat: launch the instance, open its public IP and create your administrator account in Rocket.Chat's own setup wizard. MongoDB, Nginx, Mongo Express and Webmin are already set up.
- Secure by default: no shared or default passwords. You choose the Rocket.Chat admin account yourself, every instance sets its own Mongo Express and Webmin passwords, MongoDB listens only on the server itself and SSH is key-only.
- Your conversations stay on your server: channels, direct messages, threads, file sharing, mobile and desktop apps, and a live chat widget for your website.

Additional details
Usage instructions
Once the instance is running, enter http://<instance-public-ip> into your browser. Wait about ten minutes the first time while Rocket.Chat starts, then follow the setup wizard to create your administrator account and workspace. Mongo Express is at http://<instance-public-ip>:8081; sign in with admin and your instance ID. Webmin is on port 8000, so open http://<instance-public-ip>:8000 and sign in with admin as the username and your instance ID as the password. You can also connect over SSH with the username ubuntu and your Amazon key pair.
Required inbound ports: 22 (SSH), 80 (Rocket.Chat), 8081 (Mongo Express) and 8000 (Webmin). For security, allow ports 22, 8081 and 8000 only from your own IP address.
Your instance ID is shown in the EC2 console, for example i-0123456789abcdef0. Every instance sets its own passwords on first boot, so no two instances share a password.
Change your console passwords at any time: connect over SSH and run sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/pass_mongoexpress.sh or pass_webmin.sh, from the same folder. pass_rocketchat.sh resets a Rocket.Chat user's password if you ever lose it.
The image serves plain HTTP so it works on a bare IP address. Before using it in production, add your own domain and an SSL certificate, or place it behind a load balancer with HTTPS.
