Overview
Apache Kafka is an open source event streaming platform. Teams use it to move data between applications in real time: website activity, orders, sensor readings, logs and change data from databases. This image gives developers and data teams a working Kafka server in minutes, with a web console for looking at topics and messages and dashboards for watching the broker, so you can start building instead of installing.
What is included: Apache Kafka 4.3.1 in KRaft mode on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with Java, the AKHQ web console, Kafka Connect, Prometheus with the Kafka and Node exporters, and Grafana. On every boot the broker advertises the instance's public address, so clients outside the server can connect once you allow them. Security is on by default: no password ships in the image. On first boot every instance sets its own AKHQ and Grafana passwords and a new AKHQ sign-in key, and SSH accepts key-based login only.
What you get on top of the free software: a pre-built and tested image that is ready in minutes, a unique security setup for every server, simple scripts for changing passwords, regular image updates, and help by email whenever you need it. Apache Kafka, Kafka Connect, AKHQ and Prometheus are open source software licensed under Apache-2.0, and Grafana under AGPL-3.0. Apache Kafka is a trademark of the Apache Software Foundation, and Grafana is a trademark of Grafana Labs. This image is an independent build by ProvenCloud.
Highlights
- Ready in minutes: launch the instance and open AKHQ on port 8080 to browse topics, messages and consumer groups. Kafka runs in KRaft mode, so there is no ZooKeeper to manage.
- Secure by default: no shared or default passwords. Every instance sets its own AKHQ and Grafana passwords on first boot and the AKHQ sign-in key is regenerated, and SSH accepts key-based login only.
- See what is happening: Prometheus collects broker and server metrics and Grafana on port 3000 shows them as dashboards. Kafka Connect is included for moving data in and out.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Latest stable release on AWS Marketplace.
Apache Kafka 4.3.1 (KRaft) on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with AKHQ, Kafka Connect, Prometheus and Grafana.
Unique AKHQ and Grafana passwords are set for every instance on first boot.
Includes helper scripts in /home/ubuntu/iscripts for changing passwords.
Additional details
Usage instructions
Once the instance is running, open the AKHQ web console at http://<instance-public-ip>:8080 and sign in with admin as the username and your instance ID as the password. Grafana is at http://<instance-public-ip>:3000; sign in with admin and your instance ID. You can also connect over SSH with the username ubuntu and your Amazon key pair.
Required inbound ports: 22 (SSH), 8080 (AKHQ) and 3000 (Grafana). Applications connect to Kafka on port 9092, which has no password, so open 9092 only to the IP addresses of your own applications. For security, allow port 22 only from your own IP address.
Your instance ID is shown in the EC2 console, for example i-0123456789abcdef0. Every instance sets its own passwords on first boot, so no two instances share a password. Allow two to three minutes after launch for the first-boot setup to finish before you sign in.
Change your passwords after the first sign-in: connect over SSH and run sudo bash /home/ubuntu/iscripts/pass_akhq.sh for AKHQ or pass_grafana.sh for Grafana, from the same folder.
The image serves plain HTTP so it works on a bare IP address. Before using it in production, add your own domain and an SSL certificate, or place it behind a load balancer with HTTPS.
