Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run. The six options—t2.nano, t2.micro, t2.small, t3.nano, t3.micro, and t3.small—reflect small instance sizes. Your hourly rate rises as you move to larger instances with more compute and memory. This usage-based model has no upfront license purchase; you pay only for the hours each instance runs. The Developer Edition runs on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution and is limited to these small instance types for evaluating Varnish Enterprise 6.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do the hourly instance rates cover, and are separate AWS charges added?
The hourly rate covers the Varnish Enterprise 6 Developer Edition software license for the chosen EC2 instance type. AWS bills the underlying EC2 compute and any storage separately. You pay per hour each instance runs, with no upfront license purchase.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped instead of running?
Software charges apply per running instance-hour. When you stop an instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. AWS may still bill underlying storage for a stopped instance, but the Varnish license meters running time only.
Can I run the Developer Edition on larger EC2 instance types if I need more capacity?
No. The Developer Edition is limited to the six small instance types listed: t2.nano, t2.micro, t2.small, t3.nano, t3.micro, and t3.small. It is meant for evaluating Varnish Enterprise 6. Larger workloads require the production-grade images, which run on a wider range of instance types.

You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
In your image, you will see two "varnishd" processes running one is the master process and the other is a child process. Varnish Enterprise listens by default on TCP port 80 where it expects to receive HTTP requests.
