AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on the duration and terms of your contract with the vendor. This entitles you to a specified quantity of use for the contract duration. If you choose not to renew or replace your contract before it ends, access to these entitlements will expire.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
This listing prices by a single dimension: the Clusters pack. You buy in units, and each unit covers up to 5 clusters with Enterprise Lite Support. To cover more clusters, you add more units, so cost scales with the number of clusters you run. There are no separate tiers or instance sizes here. This subscription provides enterprise support for upstream Istio and Envoy, including break/fix support and extended CVE protection.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What counts as one cluster for billing within a Clusters pack unit?
A cluster is a Kubernetes cluster running upstream Istio and Envoy under your control. Each unit covers up to 5 such clusters. Clusters six and beyond require a second unit. You count the number of clusters you operate, then buy enough units to cover them all.
What happens to my cost when I add clusters beyond the 5 covered by a unit?
Each unit covers up to 5 clusters. When you exceed 5, you add another unit, and that unit covers the next batch of up to 5 clusters. Cost scales in unit steps, not per individual cluster. You buy units to match your total cluster count.
What support and protection are included with each Clusters pack unit?
Each unit includes Enterprise Lite Support. The subscription provides enterprise support for upstream Istio and Envoy, break/fix support, and extended CVE protection that lengthens Istio shelf life. You also get access to FIPS-verified Istio builds and a configuration analyzer that detects config issues.

What is our primary use case?
In our case, we have a Kubernetes cluster running and we needed an Istio solution for that, so we went with the open-source Istio version, but soon we realized that it was getting quite hectic to manage it. We found that we could perhaps have some platform version of it, and so we discovered Tetrate and we started using it.
We have a lot of microservices running in our Kubernetes cluster, and in our application, we provide logging and many other features. Initially, it was baked into our application, but we soon realized that it was getting quite messy and we needed different microservices. So, we created a different microservice for logging and monitoring, but we had to manage it manually. We found about Istio, and with the help of Istio, we can create a sidecar proxy that runs as a single container in that. That is how we are using it, and Tetrate Istio Subscription has a very good UI as well to the platform to use it.
If we talk about workflow, there is no specific workflow as such. In our case, we just use the platform version which has Istio, and then we integrate it with our cluster, and we are able to use it properly.
What is most valuable?
Apart from the open-source features, Tetrate Istio Subscription offers some enterprise support and features. The best part is the support feature that they provide. So, there are times where we face issues with our clusters and Istio, and there are things we do not understand properly. The support is quite good; we can easily contact them, and they are ready to help anytime we want to.
I like some of the features that are there on top of the open-source version. If we talk about the normal mTLS feature, that is there, but the way they have integrated it with Tetrate Istio Subscription platform makes it more seamless and easy to use.
What needs improvement?
Tetrate Istio Subscription has a lot of features, and the support is also quite good. At the moment, I cannot think of any specific improvements needed because they are providing most of the features; however, there is always room for improvement.
I choose 8 out of 10 because they are already a good product providing most of the features. There are times that, while the support is quite good, sometimes it gets a bit complex. Istio is a quite complex system, and the UI is okay. They are improving, but I think there can be some room for improvement in the UI and the overall platform.
Regarding Tetrate Istio Subscription's AI capabilities, I think the AI feature is up to the mark. The guardrails are good, and I would not say it is 100% accurate; there are times where they do hallucinate, which is part and parcel of the AI capabilities we use. They are still improving in that area.
I would not say Tetrate Istio Subscription is 100% correct; they do hallucinate sometimes, but they are really helpful. It is better than just manually seeing things. Using their AI capabilities, we can leverage that, and sometimes it makes things faster as well.
For how long have I used the solution?
It has been around a year now that I have been using Tetrate Istio Subscription.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Tetrate Istio Subscription is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Overall, I think Tetrate Istio Subscription's scalability is good.
How are customer service and support?
There was a time when we received a lot of traffic, and we were facing a downtime. We were trying to debug an issue with Istio, and one of our leads was not available at that time; we were not able to connect with him. We were facing some issues with Tetrate Istio Subscription platform that Istio provided, so we contacted the Tetrate team, and they were quite prompt with the request. One of the team members came on the call and helped us to solve the issue.
The customer support is quite awesome; I love that. They have quite good customer support and are always ready to help whenever we are stuck.
I would rate customer support as 10 out of 10; they are quite good. Whenever you are stuck, they are ready to help you.
The best part is the support; the expertise they provide about Istio is invaluable. Whenever the team is stuck, they are ready to help and are very fluent with the product.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We were using the open-source version of Istio, but soon we realized it was getting quite complicated to manage. The DevOps team was quite busy with that, and we were not able to deliver things on our product side. So, we thought of using Tetrate Istio Subscription because they have a team of core developers who are working with Istio and know the ins and outs of the product.
What was our ROI?
The deployment speed has increased quite a lot since adopting Tetrate Istio Subscription. There are a couple of microservices that we do not need to individually manage ourselves; we can just have a sidecar integrated which runs with the main application container we have. Overall, we feel that time has been saved and deployment speed has also increased.
The time saved is one of the major factors that we have seen in our company with the product we are using; I think that is one of the things.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I think their licensing is quite good. The setup cost is also okay, but the pricing is a bit high in our case. We are not a big company, so we have a tight budget, which is the reason why the pricing feels a bit on the higher side.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Apart from the open-source Istio, we did not evaluate any other options.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, Tetrate Istio Subscription has enhanced the way we see our product. We are able to make the deployment easy now. We do not have to manage logging, monitoring, and everything; we are just using Istio for that, and the TLS part is also solved. We do not need to have our TLS; we just have mTLS support in Istio through which two different microservices can talk to each other, making it quite useful in our whole organization.
Tetrate Istio Subscription is a quite good product to use. They have most of the features that Istio provides and some more features that the Istio open-source version does not have. I would rate this product 8 out of 10.
