You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance type. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance size, so the hourly rate you pay follows the instance you select. Smaller instances like t2.nano and t3.micro sit at one end, while large compute, memory, and GPU-focused instances like x1e.32xlarge, u-24tb1.metal, and p3dn.24xlarge sit at the other. Pricing scales with the size and family of the instance you run. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of billing cover for a given EC2 instance type?
One hour covers the software running on one instance of the type you select, plus vendor support. Each dimension maps to a single EC2 instance size, so you pay the hourly rate tied to that size. If you run two instances of the same type, you pay two hourly rates.
Am I charged the software rate when an instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. When you start it again, hourly billing resumes. Underlying AWS storage or other AWS resource fees may still apply separately while the instance is stopped.
What comes with this AMI beyond the base Amazon Linux 2 operating system?
The AMI is optimized to run Amazon ECS container workloads on Amazon Linux 2, and it includes support from the vendor. Support covers help with installation and configuration questions. The hourly software rate you pay reflects the instance type you choose to run.
