Ubuntu Pro FIPS is the critical foundation for state agencies administering federal programs and private sector companies with government contracts. Ubuntu Pro FIPS is built upon the power of Ubuntu Pro's enhanced stability, compliance and security features and is maintained to provide your organization with the strongest FIPS foundation now and in the future.

    Additional security patches beyond the basic maintenance that comes with Ubuntu ensure all Critical and High CVEs for 28,000 packages are addressed. Kernel livepatch applies security fixes to the live running kernel, ensuring maximum uptime and minimizing operational overhead. Ubuntu Pro FIPS rolls up all the security features Canonical customers enjoy, and enables them automatically with no up front contract required.

    Ubuntu Pro FIPS includes Canonical's Ubuntu Advantage Essential offerings for both Infrastructure and Applications such as certification, compliance and hardening profiles including FIPS 140-2, Common Criteria EAL2, CIS and DISA STIG. Security patch coverage expands constantly based on customer priorities and usage patterns.

    Ubuntu Pro FIPS is a separate build of Ubuntu certified by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) with all the additional security capabilities that Canonical provides to enterprise customers including those who operate in regulated environments such as FedRAMP, HIPAA, PCI.

    What do you like best about the product?
    I appreciate Ubuntu’s massive community ecosystem paired with its LTS release cadence. Whenever I hit strange issues with our sensor‑processing workloads, I can almost always find existing forum threads covering similar bugs. Deb package compatibility is solid, and most open‑source tools we rely on have pre‑built Ubuntu versions ready to install. Security patches roll out predictably for LTS builds, so I don’t need to spend excessive time hardening each individual server. For our small infrastructure team, this reduces guesswork and keeps our data pipelines operating steadily day in and day out. Additionally, deploying Ubuntu on our cloud instances was quick and straightforward; cloud templates were readily available so we could spin‑up new data processing servers in minutes. Once those initial templates were finalized, rolling out additional Ubuntu hosts became very fast for our environmental data workloads.
    What do you dislike about the product?
    One persistent pain point I run into is proprietary hardware driver support on Ubuntu desktop. Some of our specialized lab monitoring peripherals struggle to get properly recognized, requiring manual third-party driver installs that break after system updates. Certain newer kernel versions also occasionally introduce minor regressions for our cloud virtual instances. Snaps can feel intrusive too; some pre-installed snap applications auto-update in the background and eat unexpected disk resources. While server-focused workflows remain very reliable, desktop-side polish for niche industry hardware still leaves room for meaningful improvements.
    What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
    Ubuntu resolves inconsistent behavior across servers by providing stable packages and community support. It reduces debugging overhead, ensures dependable uptime, and supports sensor-processing services without OS conflicts. The LTS releases mean fewer major upgrades, keeping our data collection stable.

    What do you like best about the product?
    I really like Ubuntu's flexibility, stability, and strong support for software development. The terminal and package management system make it easy to install development tools, manage dependencies, and automate tasks. I particularly appreciate the straightforward integration with Git, Python, Docker, compilers, and other development tools, which makes setting up and maintaining projects convenient. The ability to customize the environment to suit different development needs is another major advantage. I also value the large open-source community and extensive documentation, which make troubleshooting and learning new tools much easier. Overall, Ubuntu provides a clean and powerful environment that gives me good control over my development workflow. The additional tools like APT package manager, GNOME desktop environment, Terminal, Snap, and built-in system utilities further enhance its use for both everyday development and advanced technical experimentation.
    What do you dislike about the product?
    One area Ubuntu could improve is hardware compatibility and ease of configuration, especially for users who are new to Linux. Some peripherals, proprietary drivers, or specialized applications can require additional setup compared with Windows or macOS. Software availability can also occasionally be a limitation when a specific commercial application does not have a native Linux version. I’d also like the software-center and package-management experience to feel more consistent, particularly when choosing between APT, Snap, and other installation methods. Overall, Ubuntu is very capable for development, but better hardware support, application availability, and a more streamlined software-management experience would make it more accessible for everyday users.

    I find Ubuntu solves the need for a stable, flexible environment for software development, with easy access to tools and a supportive community. However, hardware compatibility and software availability can be issues, requiring extra setup versus other OS. Greater hardware support and streamlined software management would be beneficial.

    What do you like best about the product?
    Ubuntu is very helpful because it’s free, secure, stable, and user-friendly, and it’s also ideal for development work. It provides excellent software support along with regular updates, and the strong community assistance makes it easier to solve problems when they come up. It also runs efficiently even on older hardware, which makes it a reliable operating system for both beginners and professionals.
    What do you dislike about the product?
    One downside of Ubuntu is that some Windows-only applications and games aren’t fully compatible. Also, certain hardware drivers or other software may take extra setup or configuration compared to Windows.
    What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
