The t3 instances are general-purpose sizes, from small (t3.nano, t3.micro) up to t3.2xlarge. The m5 instances offer balanced compute and memory, scaling up to m5.24xlarge and bare-metal m5.metal. The c5 instances target compute-heavy work, up to c5.24xlarge and c5.metal. Larger sizes give you more CPUs and RAM, and the hourly rate rises with size. What does one billing unit cover for these instances?
You pay per hour for one running virtual machine of the instance type you select. Each instance type maps to a set amount of CPUs and RAM. The largest sizes reach up to 96 CPUs and 384 GB RAM. One instance-hour is counted for each hour the machine runs.
Am I charged when the virtual machine is stopped?
Software charges meter running time only. When you stop the instance, hourly software charges stop accruing. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but the software licence bills only for hours the machine runs.
How do the t3, m5, and c5 instance families differ for my workload?
The t3 family is general-purpose and suits lighter or intermittent tasks. The m5 family balances compute and memory for mixed workloads. The c5 family targets compute-heavy analysis. You pick the family and size that fits your model, and the hourly rate reflects the resources allocated.
