Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for the software, billed per running EC2 instance. The database ships as an Amazon Machine Image, so your rate follows the EC2 instance type you launch. The dimensions list many instance families and sizes, including general-purpose, compute-optimized, and memory-optimized options. Larger instances carry more CPU and memory, so the hourly software charge scales with the instance size you select. You add storage and tune resources to fit your workload. There are no fixed tiers or term commitments; cost rises or falls with the instance you run and how long it runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You get the database shipped as an Amazon Machine Image on an EC2 instance. The machine runs the server plus listeners for standard database, JSON, and REST client connections. You can add storage and tune CPU and memory to fit your workload after launching.
The software charge meters running hours. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops too. Underlying AWS storage attached to a stopped instance may still accrue separate AWS fees, but the software license only counts time the instance runs.
Each instance family and size carries different CPU and memory. The software rate maps to the instance type you launch, so compute-optimized or memory-optimized sizes with more resources carry a higher hourly software charge than smaller ones. You pick the type that matches your workload.

Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
