You pay by the hour for the database software running on an EC2 virtual machine. The software is delivered as an Amazon Machine Image (AMI). Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so your rate follows the compute and memory size you pick. Smaller instances like t2.micro carry lower hourly rates, while large instances like x1e.32xlarge carry higher rates. Pricing scales with instance capacity, not with users or data volume. You can select the instance type that matches your CPU, memory, and storage needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get running on each EC2 instance type I select?
You get the HCL Informix 15 database software preinstalled on an Amazon Machine Image (AMI). Each dimension maps to one EC2 virtual machine of that instance type, with the database server running and listening on standard ports. You can tune CPU, memory, and storage to match your workload.
Am I charged when the EC2 instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges meter running instance-hours, so a fully stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software rate. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes. The software rate applies only while the instance runs.
Does my hourly rate change based on users, transactions, or data volume?
No. Your rate is fixed by the EC2 instance type you choose, not by users, transactions, or stored data. Running more workload on a given instance does not raise the software rate. To handle more capacity, you select a larger instance type, which carries its own hourly rate.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
