See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen EC2 instance type. All 29 dimensions deliver the same Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 image with web and RDP access, plus vendor support. The dimensions map to instance sizes across four families. The t2, t3, and t3a families are burstable, general-purpose instances offered from micro up to 2xlarge. The m6a and m6i families are general-purpose instances from large up to 8xlarge, with m6a also offering a bare-metal option. Cost scales with the instance size and family you select and the hours you run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What resources do I get for one hourly charge on a given instance type?
You get the Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 image with web and RDP access running on one EC2 instance of the size you pick. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so a t3.medium charge covers one t3.medium instance running for one hour, including vendor support.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when my instance is stopped?
The hourly software fee meters running time. When you stop the instance, it stops accruing software charges. Underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume may still apply while the instance is stopped, but those are separate from this software charge.
How does cost change if I switch to a larger instance type?
Cost scales with the instance size and family you run. Moving from a smaller size to a larger one, or between the t2, t3, t3a, m6a, and m6i families, changes the hourly rate. You are billed for the type actually running each hour, so switching takes effect immediately.
